I. ATHLETES Expecta ons: It is expected that athletes show gra tude and respect to their coaches and fellow athletes at all me. Con nued effort to improve and be prepared to take on challenges will produce posi ve results both on the water and off. This handbook has been produced in an effort to have athletes, coaches and RSR parents and friends understand the policies and guidelines of RSR. Athletes need to read and understand this handbook so that they can be prepared for a successful rowing experience. All athletes should have read and signed the RSR Athlete Commitment (see Appendix I). Athlete Code of Conduct: When represen ng RSR it is understood by all members that a high level of maturity and responsibility will be maintained. While away at the rega a or while on day trips or at home at NMH, athletes are expected to be courteous to fellow members of RSR and NMH staff. Members will respect all property, and follow the rules of common sense and order. Moving outside of these guidelines could result in disciplinary ac on. As an athlete with RSR it is understood that at all mes, safety is the number one concern. At all mes athletes should be aware of their surroundings so that they are not endangering themselves, others or equipment belonging to any rowing club. Proper precau ons are necessary at all mes to minimize the likelihood of these hazards becoming a threat. Athletes are so very lucky to have the equipment, coaches, volunteers and infrastructure that is present at the NMH School. Athletes are not permi ed to keep and self-administer any medica ons (prescribed or OTC) with the excep on of inhalers, epi-pens and diabetes medica on. All medica ons must be kept with the RSR Health Supervisor and must be administered directly with the Health Supervisor’s oversight. Epipens, inhalers and diabe c medica ons must be brought to the RSR Health Supervisor at the start of camp with the appropriate paperwork (MD order and parent permission). All athletes should bring enough medica on for camp. All parents have the right to request RSR Medical Policies & Procedures. In addi on, RSR has zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior while training at camp or compe ng at Na onals. Inappropriate behavior includes: curfew viola ons, disrup ve conduct, disobedience of authority, disregard for RSR Code of Conduct & Rules, sexual harassment, use of racial slurs, figh ng/physical harassment, indecent gestures, inappropriate contact, promiscuous behavior or any type of vandalism. Athletes may self-monitor and report any misconduct to staff immediately. Rules 3 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.

A endance & Punctuality All athletes are expected to par cipate in all water, land and classroom prac ces along with group ac vi es unless they have pre-approval from a Coach to miss a prac ce or session. Coach-ability The coaches are here to help you become a be er rower and can help you become as good as you want to be. It is expected that you should be ac ve in your own improvement by helping find ways to aid in the process. Prac ce and training are not things the coaches do to you. Rather, it is something you do to yourself with the assistance and guidance of the coaches. Coach-ability of each member of the team is vital and for each crew and the team as a whole. The following are expecta ons and challenges to meet regarding coach-ability: ● Be respec ul of the coaches and listen when they are speaking. ● Know that your coaches are trying to help you improve. They’re part of the team, too, so trust in their abili es. We have the privilege of several virtual coaches and speakers, be respec ul and grateful that they are spending their me to help you improve. ● Be willing to try new ideas. ● Have pa ence with yourself and your teammates. Allow yourself to make mistakes, strive to improve upon them. ● Ask ques ons. Use the coaches as a resource. The more informed the team is and the more its members understand rowing, the more successful we will ul mately be. ● Come to prac ce ready to learn and grow as a person and a rower. Have an open mind and an eager heart. ● Remember that cri que of your daily rowing performance is not cri que of you as a person. In turn, remember that cri que of coaching should be the same. Keep the sport in perspec ve. ● As an athlete it is best not to coach other athletes. Be aware of the difference between coaching and communica ng an idea or sugges on to another rower. When in doubt speak to our coach about the difficul es that you feel a fellow athlete may be having. Prac ce A re Athletes will wear appropriate training a re at all prac ces and at all mes at the rega a. At no me will you pull your uni down or row in just a sports bra whether at home or at the rega a. Prac cing in the heat and humidity requires proper dress as well as proper condi oning. Normal prac ce will take place in the early morning or in the late a ernoon to try to avoid extreme temperatures. However racing will take place in extreme condi ons so it is beneficial to some mes train during peak mes of heat and humidity. Below is a list of warm weather gear: ● Snug fi ng clothing to wick moisture away from the body ● The torso must be covered at all mes ● Sunscreen (spf 30) ● Plenty of water – water bo les in the boat must be put in a sock or other cover 6 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.

This includes: assigned dormitories, dining hall, boathouse and waterfront (only at water prac ce mes) and outside areas. At no point may an athlete leave campus. Curfews All athletes have a corridor curfew of 9:30pm and must be in their own personal bed with lights out by 10:00pm. At no point is an RSR athlete permi ed to enter the dorm room of a camper other than an RSR athlete. If an RSR 9 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
Coach finds an athlete outside of her dorm a er curfew (9:30pm) or ignoring the lights out rule, we reserve the right to contact parents/guardians at any me of night and the incident will be recorded. When at the compe on, athletes have the same curfews and may never leave the hotel or race -course without Coach permission and athletes are never to enter the hotel room of another person outside of the RSR team (see Rega a). Cell Phones All athletes should come to camp with a personal cell phone if she has one. We will u lize GroupMe on cellphones to communicate things like changes in prac ce mes. And we will use RowHero to record erg workouts. We do ask that athletes place their cell phones in the RSR basket in the dining hall at each meal so that they can enjoy each other’s company and athletes do not bring cell phones into mental-skill training so that they can work without distrac on. We also hold several “no cell phone” challenges for athletes who accept the challenge. If an athlete accepts the challenge- she will no fy her parents and they will be able to contact Coach Holly if there is an emergency. All athletes and parents have Coach Holly’s personal cell phone numbers, but we respec ully ask that no calls or texts are made between the hours of 9:30pm-7am with the excep on of a camp emergency. If a parent/guardian does leave a non-emergency message for a Coach that requires follow-up please be pa ent and we will get back to you as soon as we are able. You will receive an invita on from GroupMe once you download the app. You will also need to download RowHero and use the code “RQTN3D” to join RSR. Equipment It is the responsibility of the athletes to have oars and the coaches’ launches prepared for prac ce at the me specified by the coach. Care for the equipment is an ongoing process by being aware of surroundings so that boats are not knocked into other obstacles, on and off the water. Take care of the equipment, and the equipment will take care of you. Every me an athlete gets into a boat they should step in the appropriate place with toes over the edge of the deck and without shoes on. Once in the boat with their water bo le that is covered with a sock the athlete should hand ghten every nut and bolt in their sta on. This is also good prac ce for the coxswain as they also have many nuts and bolts in their sta on. The athletes also have the responsibility to assemble or prepare the coach boat and motor for their coach. Be sure to put the plug in before pu ng the launch in the water. Once the prac ce session is over again it is the responsibility of the athlete to remove the coach boat. This should happen a er every prac ce session so that others are not removing the boat in their place. 10 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
RSR rents all of their equipment, which means we do not have spare equipment. If one of the shells is damaged we will not have the use of the shell for the rest of the camp so it is cri cal that athletes take care of the equipment. Any misuse/abuse any of the equipment or property of RSR and/or NMH School is forbidden and grounds for disciplinary ac on. III. DISCIPLINARY The Ready Set Row (RSR) Development Team Camp is a rigorous rowing program with the mission of building strong, brave and resilient women through the sport of rowing. Our athletes apply, conduct an interview with a RSR Coach and then register for the training camp with a full understanding of the physical, mental and emo onal demands of the camp. All athletes and a parent/guardian read and sign the Ready Set Row Athlete Commitment (Appendix I) and have read and signed the RSR Handbook detailing RSR Code of Conduct & Rules and have been honest and transparent through the applica on process including erg mes, age, height and weight. While RSR endeavors to provide support and guidance to par cipants on a day-to-day basis, it is also important for RSR to have a formal procedure for disciplinary ac on to address alleged viola ons of its policies and other inappropriate behaviors. These procedures and rules apply to all COVID-19 preven on and risk management protocols. Disciplinary Rules RSR recognizes that there are varying levels of misconduct. For example, physical misconduct or disregard for campus curfews are serious viola ons that may result in immediate dismissal. In contrast, a youth par cipant who tells an inappropriate joke or uses poor judgment cons tutes less serious misconduct and depending on the circumstances, might be dealt with more appropriately through dialogue and a verbal warning. In all cases, RSR’s disciplinary procedures and ac ons will be propor onate, reasonable and applied fairly and equally. Disciplinary Procedure On receipt of an allega on, RSR will determine in its discre on the appropriate steps to address the conduct based on several factors, including the nature, scope, and extent of the allega ons or offense. RSR’s disciplinary response will depend on the nature and seriousness of the incident and in extreme cases, misconduct will result in immediate summary dismissal of paid coach or athletes. Disciplinary Ac on Sanc ons for viola ons of the RSR Code of Conduct & Rules will be propor onate and reasonable under the circumstances. In addi on to day-to-day guidance, RSR may take the following disciplinary ac ons without limita on: 11 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
● Inform the athlete’s parent or guardian – depending on offense, at any me day or night ● Provide the individual with guidance, redirec on and instruc on ● Temporary suspension from par cipa on ● File a formal incident report ● Issue a verbal warning – individual mee ngs with athletes will confirm/discuss an event or behavior and determine procedure moving forward. NOTE – coaches will never have a one-on-one mee ng with closed doors with an athlete. There will always be 2+ coaches present for individual mee ngs. ● Issue a wri en and/or final wri en warning ● Provide informed supervision, where at least one staff member is informed of the allega on and is instructed to vigilantly supervise the accused par cipant ● Engage in restora ve prac ces, ie., crea on of a respec ul and safe dialogue when a misunderstanding or harm has occurred ● Suspend or terminate the team member where the athlete is expelled and must be picked up by a guardian within 24 hrs. IV. MEDICAL All incidents and injuries should be reported to Coach Holly and the RSR Health Supervisor and will be recorded in the RSR Medical Logbook and CampDoc. Minor first aid (bee s ng, bandaid etc) provided by a Health Supervisor will be documented in the log located in the First Aid kit, which will be regularly reviewed by all Health Supervisors. Please remember, the RSR Coaches are not medical professionals and in the case of an emergency or any treatment beyond basic first aid, the athlete will be brought to Urgent Care, the ER or we will call 911. Depending on the injury/sickness an athlete may stay in the NMH sick room to prevent other athletes from ge ng sick (please see “COVID” below). RSR does not have a nurse in the sick room 24hrs. per day. In the instance that an athlete must stay in a sick room, either a RSR Coach or RA will stay in the building so she is not le una ended or depending on the illness, an athle c trainer will be called in or the athlete will be taken to Urgent Care. If it is severe, she will be taken to Urgent Care or the ER, her parent/guardian will be contacted and she may have to leave camp at her own expense. If an athlete gets sick when traveling, she may have to get another hotel room at her own expense, to prevent other athletes from ge ng sick. Sick athletes at Na onals will be under the care of a RSR Health Supervisor and the Emergency Medical Technicians at the USRowing First Aid Tent. Those athletes who are unable to get the required vaccina ons for health reasons only will be evaluated by RSR health officials on a case-by-case basis and may be required to abstain from certain ac vi es. Athletes must have wri en parent/guardian consent for medica on administra on and an MD order (RSR Medical Order found on CampDoc) and a Health Supervisor will administer all medica ons. All prescrip on medica on must be stored in the camp health office in their original container with the athlete’s name, physician’s name, and dosage. All over the counter 12 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.

Refunds will not be offered for USRowing ODP programs. In order to express a grievance please do so by e-mail directly to Coach Holly: holly@readysetrow.com VI. TRAINING Eligibility and Divisions Under 17 – Athlete will NOT turn 17 years of age during the current calendar year. Under 19 – Athlete will NOT turn 19 years of age during the current calendar year. Under 23 Women - Athletes will NOT turn 23 years of age during the current calendar year. Coxswains must follow the same age requirements and must weigh at least 110lbs on race day (with or without weight). Lightweight Women - Athletes must weigh less then 59kg (130lbs) during the USRowing Summer Na onal Championship. Procedures Ergometer Racing The ergometer is a cri cal component of our training program. Ergs will be u lized with a fitness test at the beginning of camp, during inclement weather and 2k prep workouts throughout the first three weeks. All athletes will 2K test before leaving for Na onals. Skill Assessment As a method of improving athletes in the program, the coaches will conduct skill assessment of each athlete including coxswains. Rowers will have regular video review and coxswains will record prac ces for review. These are excellent opportuni es for the athletes to learn how to improve. 14 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
Seat Racing A er ergometer prac ces and skill assessments the coaches will have a good idea as to who will be eligible for seat racing. There are no set rules as to how many athletes can or can not be put into seat racing. Seat racing and me trialing will be done in 4+s and 8+s. Coxswains will be instructed to only steer and give feedback on stroke rate. Seat racing is a necessary part of a compe ve rowing program. Seat racing is a part of the selec on process but it does not finalize the process. Coaches reserve the right at any me and for any reason to make changes in the boat. Rowers need to remember that they are all racing and their effort directly impacts the results of others It is expected that all athletes give 100% effort at all mes and should know that they are all being evaluated even if they are not physically switched. If any rower or coxswain has reason to believe that addi onal factors influenced race results they are required to tell the coaching staff immediately. Coxswain The selec on of the coxswain is just as important to the success of the boat and program as athlete selec on is. Selec ng the coxswain can be more difficult to do. Seat racing two or more coxswains against each other brings forward a wide range of variables, more so than athlete seat racing. If coxed fours were used in seat racing during athlete selec on coxswains should have been instructed to only steer and give feedback on stroke rate. Athlete response to a coxswain should not be a part of athlete selec on. Therefore, coxswain selec on comes from the following: ● Communica on with the coaching staff ● Organiza on and preparedness ● Ability to mo vate the athletes ● Athlete feedback The coxswain seat is just as important as all other seats in the boat and will be filled as such. RSR is a compe ve rowing club and so are the coxswains. The best coxswain for the seat will get the seat. VII. TRAVEL & COMPETITION Coach Holly will communicate to athletes and then parents/guardians the races, lineups and race mes 24 hours before depar ng for Na onals. Athletes will depart by bus July 12th for Cherry Hill NJ and will be released from RSR care July 18th by 2pm and/or once the trailer is packed and loaded. Van transporta on is organized for travel during USRowing Summer Na onal Championships and athletes will use these modes unless you have received Coach Holly’s permission. Athletes should reread sec on 1.2 Athletes Code of Conduct as this also applies to bus and hotel 15 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
behavior. When traveling with the team to an away rega a or at any me, random bag checks might be done by coaches. Coaches set room assignments in advance and are not changeable. Concerns should be brought to the coach directly. Having a parent present does not supersede RSR Code of Conduct & Rules (e.g. if your parents are at Na onals you s ll must follow check out protocol and adhere to curfew guidelines). When at the compe on, athletes have the same curfews and may never leave the hotel or race -course without Coach permission and athletes are never to enter the hotel room of another person outside of the RSR team. RSR Coaches will keep all medica ons securely locked in a hotel room and con nue the administra on of medicine un l the athlete completes the compe on and has checked out with a parent/guardian. Medicines will be transferred to the parent/guardian at that me and recorded. Any medica ons not returned to a parent/guardian will be disposed of properly at a policy kiosk. All athletes have a hotel room curfew of 9:30pm and must be in their own personal bed with lights out by 10:00pm. We will have 3-4 athletes per hotel room and athletes are never to exit the hotel. Dorm checks will be conducted randomly to ensure athletes are adhering to the rules. Athletes will receive a key card for their hotel room and are responsible for that card during camp. Athletes are not to share the key card with someone not assigned to that room. At no point is an RSR athlete permi ed to enter the dorm room of a camper other than an RSR athlete. If an RSR Coach finds an athlete outside of her dorm a er curfew (9:30pm) or her room a er lights out we reserve the right to contact parents/guardians at any me of night and the incident will be recorded. Depending on offense, Coaches have the right to remove racing privileges. When at the race course, athletes are expected to stay at the trailer or in the shade as a boat awai ng their race or at the RSR tent. Athletes should stay off their feet and out of the sun as much as possible. If you have to go somewhere you may only go in groups of three. It is an honor and a privilege to wear the RSR uniform. Trading of the uniform is permi ed, provided you have already raced. Also because the uniform is sought a er, it is highly recommended that your uniform is not le hanging to dry or not properly stored as it may go missing. Prior to the compe on, parents/guardians should fill out the RSR Camp Doc to indicate how the athlete will be leaving the rega a- either on the shu le to the Cincinna airport or with a parent/guardian at the course, or independently to the Cincinna airport. At the comple on of all racing, all athletes will check out of the camp with the designated RSR Coach. If depar ng from the race course, the assigned parent/guardian responsible for pickup must sign the RSR Check Out Sheet. If an athlete is leaving with another athlete or going to the CHG airport via cab or Uber, parent/guardians must send wri en permission to Coach Holly for the athlete to check out and travel independently. RSR is not responsible for any athlete once she leaves the compe on racecourse. 16 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
It is common that athletes may depart early if they are finished racing. In this instance, we ask parents and athletes to no fy RSR Coaches to grant permission and ask that early travel arrangements are only made a er it is officially confirmed that the athletes has completed racing. Athlete Race Day Guidelines and E que e: ● Boats must be strapped down at all me, whether you are rigging, de-rigging, storing between races or overnight. ● Shirts must be worn at all me; torso covered. ● Bring oars down to the dock or ramps prior to race and return them to the trailer a er each race even if your crew is racing again later that day. ● Be quick and courteous on the dock ● Be respec ul of compe tors, coaches and officials ● Coxswains are responsible for bringing a (charged) cox box, tool bag with appropriate tools and any necessary weight. Coxswains must weigh in at the appropriate me frame before every race. ● Wait un l all boats have passed the finish line before returning to the dock ● All boats must be strapped to the trailer and communicate with your coach before depar ng from the rega a site to load onto the bus ● Coxswains must lead a boat countdown before bus/van departure to ensure all athletes are on the bus Coach Race Day Guidelines and E que e: ● Work with each other; be helpful, we are all on the same team ● Work together to ensure every boat has the best race possible ● Check boat safety and rigging before they launch for each race ● Be respec ul of compe tors, coaches and officials ● Be sure shoes get removed off the dock, shake every athlete’s hand before launching if me allows Parent Race Day Guidelines and E que e: ● Please be respec ul of the athletes and carefully choose your words especially if the athlete has already raced ● Athletes will be asked not to go see parents before racing so be pa ent and they will come to you once they have raced. ● Athletes will be using RSR transporta on back to the hotel unless parents get Coach Holly’s permission and athletes must text Coach Holly upon arrival at the hotel. ● Athletes are expected to be in bed and asleep by 10pm so please limit your nigh me phone calls. 17 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
VIII. COACHES Expecta ons: Ready Set Row is grateful to all of the coaches, past and present. It is understood and appreciated that the amount of me that coaches bring to the club is priceless and without those hours the club would not be what it is today. In order to maintain a high level of club unity it is expected that all athletes in a program prac ce at one me with one program head coach and as many assistant coaches as are necessary to maintain a safe and effec ve coaching environment. This handbook has been produced in an effort to have athletes, coaches and all athletes understand the policies and guidelines of RSR. Coaches need to read and understand this handbook so that they can be prepared for a successful coaching experience. Selec on: Coach Holly Aus n thoroughly researches and vets all staff per 430.090C guidelines including work/volunteer history, three posi ve reference checks from individuals not related to the prospec ve staff and a thorough interview process. All MA coaching staff and volunteers are also checked with the state of Massachuse s through a CORI and SORI. Staff from other states, have an addi onal background check run from their state of residence. Coaches Code of Conduct: When represen ng Ready Set Row it is understood by all members that a high level of maturity and responsibility will be maintained. While away at rega as or day trips or at home at NMH, coaches are expected to be courteous to self and fellow coaches. Members will respect all property, and follow the rules of common sense and order. Moving outside of these guidelines could result in the immediate suspension or expulsion of the athlete. As a coach with RSR it is understood that at all mes, safety is the number one concern. At all mes coaches are looking for the hazards of water traffic, water condi ons, weather condi ons, and the health and well being of the athletes. Proper precau ons are necessary at all mes to minimize the likelihood of these hazards becoming a threat to the coach and the athlete(s). The goals of the coaches of RSR are to build young women, develop athletes and themselves, and con nue to improve the sport of rowing. As a coach, care and thought should be put into how much influence one can have with a young athlete. During the applica on and interview process, athletes are informed that RSR inten onally challenges its athletes to step outside their comfort zones and that this can be emo onally challenging. Athletes and parents should expect this type of challenge and have agreed to undergo the training so that the athlete can gain a new understanding of herself and her strengths. Given the coaches will work closely with the athletes on difficult and complex topics like self-esteem and confidence, a level of trust is built that greatly benefits athletes. Coaches 18 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
will respect the privacy of the athletes and are not obligated to share discussion topics with parents unless there is a concern for safety. Although Coaches want to protect the level of trust, if at any me, a coach is genuinely concerned with the safety or personal welfare of an athlete or the safety/welfare of another athlete the coach will immediately no fy Coach Holly and the parent/guardian will be no fied. Athletes in this situa on may be asked to leave the camp with no refunds. Each athlete will be assigned to 1 coach mentor. Mentees will meet once per week for a check in, technical feedback and discussion. Educa on and Cer fica on: RSR has a robust Orienta on Program for all RSR Coaches. All Coaches are expected to have an up to date CPR and AED Cer fica on. At least one coach will have a First Aid cer fica on and all athletes will have access to the RSR Health Supervisor. In addi on, all coaches will be trained in Epi-Pen use, have read and signed the RSR SafeSport Policy and complete the HeadsUp Coaches Concussion Training. In addi on, all coaches will supply RSR with a health history, physical examina on report conducted in the last 24 months and cer ficate of immuniza on. Equipment use and care It is primarily the responsibility of the athlete to care for the equipment but the coach can play a large role in the fine tuning of this process. Be aware of the proper placement of all boats back on the rack, as well as correct placement in and out of stretchers and the water. Much of the same applies to the care and use of the coach boat and motor; it is the responsibility of the athlete. However, it is good habit to check that they have assembled the boat correctly so that the coach does not get into trouble with problems such as a missing drain plug or the motor is not properly secured to the transom. Another good habit is to ensure that the athletes take the coach boat out of the water a er every prac ce session. If a coach feels that a piece of equipment is in need of repair please report it to the Head Coach as soon as possible. It is common prac ce to be constantly aware of your surroundings when moving the shell from the boathouse to the water, rowing on the water, and returning the shell to the boathouse. O en over looked or forgo en is the dangers of the coach boat and motor. In order to protect the driver, the athletes and the equipment, the coach boat driver must always be wearing the automa c shut off tether that is a ached to the motor. Wearing this tether saves lives and equipment. Coach Boat Use Reminders: ● All coaches will always have a cellphone on her during every prac ce 19 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
● Stay clear of shore to avoid rocks that will damage the propeller ● Check to make sure that cooling water is flowing out of the back of the motor; weeds can o en clog the intake ● Mind your wake; always have an eye for where you are going and where you have been ● Leave and approach the dock with no wake so that boats are not waked up onto the dock. ● Start-up checklist: ● Kill switch toggle is a ached to motor and operator ● Plenty of fuel in the tank ● Choke is pulled out all the way, once running push back in ½ way and let idle for 5 ● minutes before pushing in all the way and pu ng the engine in gear ● Fuel line is firmly a ached and the can lid is slightly open to allow air flow ● Engine is flooded; if you have been trying to start the motor repeatedly without success, let the motor sit for 10 minutes, and try again ● Always have a look for faster moving shells that are coming up behind the coach boat. If the shell is staying straight, point the bow of the shell directly at the engine, then cut away slowly so that the shell gets minimum wake. ● When passing a slower moving shell do so with courtesy at low speed ● When a crew is approaching a coach boat, point the bow of the shell at the motor ● Remember that someone is coming up behind you Coach Boat ● Place a lifejacket bag, paddle and any other safety equipment in the boat ● Roll the boat down the ramp into the water so that most of the boat is submerged ● Un e the boat from the cart ● Shove the boat off of the cart holding onto the bow line. ● Let Coach into the launch to start the engine. ● Return the cart to the edge of the waterfront. Traffic Pa ern It is always important to follow the posted traffic pa ern when on the water. Always be courteous to others and offer advice to out of town guests. Give way to faster moving shells, yield to those on the course when crossing the course, travel all the way to the end of the course before turning, and move off the course when stopping. Common traffic pa ern rules: ● Keep on coming traffic on port side; just like driving, stay to the right ● Right of way goes to the faster moving boat; example the slower moving boat should move to either side so that the faster boat can stay on its line ● If you must stop the shell and coach boat on the water do so off to the side and be sure not to stop directly in front of oncoming crews. 20 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
When away at the rega a it is best to research traffic pa erns before arrival, to be prepared. Once at the site, ask ques ons of the locals or at the coach’s and cox mee ng before the rega a. Weather As coaches and athletes we must be aware of the weather and the danger it imposes on us in such cases. Very quickly we can be exposed to heat stroke and lightning. Staying proac ve to weather condi ons will help to keep athletes, coaches, and equipment safe. Proper dress by the athletes was men oned earlier, but proper dress of the coaches was not. In the summer me coaches should follow the guidelines presented to athletes by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen so as not to be over come by heat stroke. Using the internet is always a good way to research poten al weather hazards for the day and should be done the hour before launch me. Local weather forecasts are a decent way to see what weather might be coming as well as local radar. If coaches are concerned about incoming weather, prac ce will be moved indoors to the ergs and indoor tanks. If boats are already out on the water when weather turns unexpectedly, boats should quickly but safely return to the docks and be as efficient as possible to get back to a shelter. If any thunder is audible or lightning is seen, boats will immediately return to the docks and coaches will also cancel water prac ce if weather apps display lightning sighted in the area even if it was not visible at the school. Coaches will have walkie talkies to communicate on the water. IX. PARENTS Parent Expecta ons: RSR is a highly compe ve rowing club. Rowing in the top boat is not a right – it is earned through effort, achievement in prac ce, experience and the ability to get the job done under pressure. Athletes are given many hours of prac ce and instruc onal me to further their development. The decision of who rows in top boats will be made in order that the team may be successful and achieve our goals. Which athlete is in which boat is exclusively the decision of the coaching staff. The coaches prac ce with your athlete and know their strengths and weaknesses in the sport of rowing. They alone have the right to decide who rows in which boat and when. Athletes are encouraged to discuss their strengths and weaknesses with their coaches during prac ce sessions at appropriate mes such as on the shore a er prac ce or in a mentor mee ng. We ask that such discussions be limited to prac ce mes only and not to approach the coaches during a rega a. Parents will please not approach coaching staff during rega a days with ques ons regarding line-up, race strategies, or boa ng posi ons. Should you have ques ons, the coaching staff will be happy to set up a me to discuss your child’s progress with you. Discussions will be limited to your athlete’s performance only. Coaches will not comment on other rower’s performances as well as other coach’s ac ons. 21 This camp must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health.
At any me, parents have the right to review RSR policies on background checks, health care and discipline as outlined in this document. Communica on Coach Holly will send weekly emails to the Dev21 Parent list with updates on prac ce and any plans for the rega a. Please reach out to Coach Holly if you have any ques ons but be pa ent for us to return your call as our schedules are very full. We encourage athletes to communicate with their parents during the camp experience, but please remember they have a rigorous schedule and may not have their phone at all mes. When you do communicate with your athlete, remember that we are working diligently to change their mindsets. We are asking them to focus on process and effort rather than “ mes” and “results.” We ask that you do not ask ques ons like the following: “Did you win?” “What was your erg me?” “How much faster are you ge ng?” “What boat are you in?” “Are your boats winning?” “Who is the best?” “Who is your toughest compe on?” Instead try asking things like: “Are you feeling fulfilled with your effort level?” “What are you learning about yourself?” “What challenge have you faced?” “How can I support you?” Please remember that your daughter is doing great and hard things- she needs your support too and we thank you for all that you are doing for her.
