Révérence to Marie Bollinger Vogt (1921 – 2020) By Condessa Croninger Who can imagine the cultural life of our community without Marie Vogt? One may as well try to imagine Christmastime without The Nutcracker… In 1939, there was no classical ballet in Northwest Ohio and no Nutcracker in the nation—and then Marie Bollinger Vogt founded Toledo Ballet. Now in its 82nd year, the mission of Toledo Ballet is to inspire the passions and spirit of our community through dance. This mission was exemplified by Mrs. Vogt, our late Founder and Artistic Director Emerita. A lifetime resident of Toledo, Marie Vogt was a student of Balanchine’s School of American Ballet and, with that training, established the Toledo Ballet while still in her teens. For the ensuing 55 years, she passionately provided quality dance training and leadership: she offered her students extensive performance opportunities with live accompaniment; she brought internationally acclaimed dancers to perform on Toledo’s stages. Thousands of students taught and mentored by her, including Toledo Ballet’s current Artistic Director Lisa Mayer-Lang, have gone on to perform, teach, and inspire others throughout the nation and around the world. This year marks our 81st presentation of The But most of all, Marie Vogt’s legacy is demonstrated Nutcracker. behind the scenes with Jim Hill By Vanessa Gardner Recently, I visited the Toledo Ballet studios and scenery shop to check out what was happening behind the scenes in preparation for the return of The Nutcracker to The Stranahan Theater. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible to stage the 80th annual production of The Nutcracker for a live audience. To maintain our record of the longest running annual production of The Nutcracker in North America, our Artistic Director, dancers, choreographers, set designers, and film crew worked to transform the Peristyle Theater into a wintery wonderland full of snow, sweets, and magic. During our interview, saws were blaring as Rob Koenig and Nick Whiterker worked to rebuild the carrier that holds up to 1,000 pounds of dance floor. nspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s book “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” written in 1816, Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the music for The Nutcracker ballet in the early 1890s. In 1941, only two years after the founding of Toledo Ballet by Marie Bollinger Vogt, the first production of The Nutcracker in the United States took place in Toledo, Ohio, complete with live orchestral accompaniment by the Friends of Music, a precursor to the Toledo Symphony. Though only an abridged score was permitted out of Russia at the end of the Great Depression and the onset of World War II, more and more of the score would be released over time, and Toledo Ballet continued to grow the production. To this day, Toledo Ballet holds the record for the longest consecutively running annual production of The Nutcracker in the nation, perpetuating a beloved holiday tradition that has become synonymous with Christmastime. In honor of Madame Vogt, the role of Clara is changed to Marie. 15

The divertissement took inspiration from a well-known candy tin that sold in Russia in the 1890s, formed in the shape of a woman wearing a large skirt. Naturally, the tin opened at the bottom to reveal the bonbons inside. Due to the weight and size of the costume, the role of Mother Ginger is traditionally – and hilariously – played by a man.
