WEBSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ORDER OF WORSHIP Transfiguration Sunday February 27, 2022 “and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.” Mark 9:3 (NRSV)
Welcome to Webster Presbyterian Church Worship. This service is recorded and will be shared on YouTube and via the church’s website. We ask that, during the service, you silence your cell phones or personal devices. If you are interested in joining or learning more about our church and its activities, please speak to an usher or one of the pastors at the end of the service. THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP A New Zealand Prayer Book “God of life and glory, your Beloved One was revealed in splendor before he suffered death upon the cross; grant that we, beholding Christ’s majesty, may be strengthened to follow him and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.” *Please stand, if able. GATHERING PRELUDE “Walk in the Light” Robert J. Hughes Tune: “Manoah” Henry W. Greatorex WELCOME Psalm 118:24 ONE: This is the day the Lord has made. ALL: Let us rejoice and be glad in it. ANNOUNCEMENTS CHORAL INTROIT “O Praise the Lord, Be Joyful” G.F. Handel Faith Choir arr. Hopson CALL TO WORSHIP Colleen Preuninger ONE: The Lord is Sovereign; let the people tremble in awe. ALL: God is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth shake. ONE: The Lord is great in Zion and is high above all peoples. ALL: Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God, and worship the Lord upon the holy mountain. —based on Psalm 99: 1-3
PRAYER OF THE DAY ONE: God of power and wonder, we are awestruck by the glory of your presence. We rejoice at what we can see; we marvel at what we cannot see. You dazzle us with your brightness; you overshadow us as with a great cloud. Loving, protecting, challenging, nurturing, you strengthen and transform us. May we love and serve you in all that we are and do. Glory be to you. ALL: Amen. HYMN “Sing of God Made Manifest” #156, vs 1,2,4 POEM Malcom Guite Transfiguration ONE: For that one moment, ‘in and out of time’, On that one mountain where all moments meet, The daily veil that covers the sublime In darkling glass fell dazzled at his feet. There were no angels full of eyes and wings Just living glory full of truth and grace. The Love that dances at the heart of things Shone out upon us from a human face And to that light the light in us leaped up, We felt it quicken somewhere deep within, A sudden blaze of long-extinguished hope Trembled and tingled through the tender skin. Nor can this blackened sky, this darkened scar Eclipse that glimpse of how things really are. CALL TO CONFESSION ONE: “For the sins I have committed are more in number than the sand of the sea; my transgressions are multiplied, O Lord, they are multiplied! I am not worthy to look up and see the height of heaven because of the multitude of my iniquities. I earnestly implore you forgive me, O Lord, forgive me!” ONE: Let us confess our sins together before God and one another. PRAYER OF CONFESSION ALL: Almighty God, we enter your presence humbly, aware that we approach you from a world that chooses to walk in darkness, apart from you. Each one of us has ignored and
even denied the enlightening power of Jesus Christ. We confess now our sins to you, God of power and might. Penetrate our darkness by the power of Christ’s light, that we may live in the joy of knowing and loving you and each other. ONE: Now, let us go to God in silent confession. [Pause] God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. ALL: We pray through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. KYRIE “You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy” #437 ASSURANCE OF GRACE Based on 2 Corinthians 3: 17-18 ONE: Hear the good news! Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven and transformed! Praise be to God! ALL: Thanks be to God! GLORIA PATRI “Glory Be to the Father” #581 PASSING THE PEACE ONE: The Peace of Christ brings joy to all. Share that peace with one another. May the peace of Christ be with you. ALL: And also with you. ONE: Let us pass the peace. THE WORD TIME WITH CHILDREN PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE Luke 9:28-36, (37-43a) ONE: This is the word of the Lord. ALL: Thanks be to God.
ANTHEM “Arise, Shine, for Your Light Has Come” K. Lee Scott Faith Choir, Victoria Santana - Soloist SERMON “Listen to Him!” INVITATION TO DISCIPLESHIP Mark 1:16-17 ONE: As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Philippians 2:5–11 ALL: Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess to the glory of God: Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Al Manson God of Salvation Oh, God of salvation please help us repair our polarized nation, we ask You in prayer. Our country’s divided by party and state with voters misguided by vicious debate. There are many abuses that tug at our heart and lots of excuses to tear us apart. Both left and the right only care if they lose; they bicker and fight and don’t care who they bruise. The races and tribes all believe they are best and politics bribes us to pound on our chest. Divisive and hateful, we’re fearful of loss unloving and spiteful, we’ll show them who’s boss.
But first help our church reunite and adhere; remember what’s right and what Jesus made clear. He mentioned His church, as in one, all alone but we have fragmented, made each one our own. Our church should be first to unite and be one, because we’re the worst ones to banish and shun. We have many sins and our choices are ample; our church should begin now to set an example. Oh, God of salvation, show us the way to save our great nation; unite us we pray. Let’s stop all our fighting that splits and divides and halt our inciting that makes us take sides. THANKSGIVING GENEROSITY OFFERING CALL TO STEWARDSHIP ONE: Come, bring thy gift. If blessings were as slow As men’s returns, what would become of fools? What hast thou there? a heart? but is it pure? Search well and see; for hearts have many holes. Yet one pure heart is nothing to bestow: In Christ two natures met to be thy cure. OFFERTORY MUSIC “I Will Never Be” Geoff Bullock Joyful Noyz DOXOLOGY “Jesus, Light of Joy” #673, vs. 3 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING George Herbert ONE: The Dedication Lord, my first fruits present themselves to thee; Yet not mine neither: for from thee they came, And must return. Accept of them and me, And make us strive, who shall sing best thy name. Turn their eyes hither, who shall make a gain: Theirs, who shall hurt themselves or me, refrain.
THE LORD’S PRAYER ALL: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us, not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. SENDING HYMN “Bring Forth the Kingdom” Insert CHARGE AND BLESSING Ephesians 4: 1-6 ONE: People of God, hear now these words of charge and blessing. I charge you to see the light of Christ in the face of everyone you meet. Treat them as you would treat Jesus. Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as we were called to the one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. Together we say: ALL: ALLELUIA, AMEN! POSTLUDE “O For a Heart to Praise My God” Robert J. Powell Today’s Worship Leaders: Rev. Dr. Keith A. Uffman Rev. The Mission/Health and Wellness and Art Committees invite you to volunteer for a new program at WPC which addresses the needs of several members of our congregation…those with memory issues and their caregivers.Using Godly Play, art and music, the mission will give the caregivers a needed respite while providing a comfortable time for some joyful stimulation to those with memory loss. Currently, at WPC, we have identified several members whose caregivers have said they would like to have this program. We need volunteers to staff the program which will be held on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 am -noon in the Godly Play Room. We cannot do this program without adequately trained volunteer participation. We need at least five volunteers per week, but more would be helpful as individualized care is ideal. Caregivers may be asked to help if we do not have sufficient volunteers. This would defeat the purpose of giving the caregiver some much needed “me” time. Volunteer training will be Saturdays March 5 and March 26 from 1pm – 3:30 pm Three soft openings in April with both the participant and caregiver present are Wednesdays April 6, 13 and 20 from 10:30-noon. Our target date to be fully operational is Wednesday, April 27, 2022, in which care- givers are no longer required to be present. We would love you to volunteer. If you are interested, please contact Sandy Dwyer (dwyer.sandy00@gmail.com) for more information. Keith will be starting a lectionary Bible study in the Parlour the first Sunday of April (April 3) from 11:30 to 1:00 It will also be zoomed.
