Mission
The Traditional Learning Centre uses teacher-
directed instruction and character education to
foster reflective thinking, continuous learning and
responsible citizenship. It is a celebration of cultural

Preparing Yourself for Grade 1

∗   Validate nervous feelings
∗   Practice being organized:
    ∗      Practice getting ready to leave the house for either the bus stop or car (build this time into your daily routine)
    ∗      How long does it take to walk to the bus stop with my child? When should we leave our house?
    ∗      How long does it take to drive to the school? When should we leave our house?
    ∗      Preparing a healthy lunch and snack – in containers that students can open on their own (plastic preferred); no microwave
           available; cookies, chips and candy is no no, students need to eat food that will provide them energy to learn; label the contents of
           the lunch bag with: ‘morning snack’; ‘lunch’; ‘afternoon snack’ Having a clean water bottle (with a straw) with fresh water ready
           for each morning
    ∗      Write down all the important school dates on to your personal calendar
    ∗      Name tags in sweaters, lunch bags, school bags, etc
    ∗      Check your email regularly; ensure that you read the email – teachers, the school, and the CBE will communicate through
           SchoolMessenger
    ∗      Have your child dressed for the weather; check the weather each morning, unsure your child has what they need for playing and
           learning outside (the weather changes quickly in Calgary) – students go outside at least 2-3 times per day
∗   Download the My Bus Stop ap (you will receive an email with your bus route and the code for the ap)
∗   Write down your teacher's email to schedule meetings
∗   Once the year begins, familiarize yourself with Google Classroom and homework routines and expectations
∗   On the first day of school, and all other school days, you will separate from your child in the compound area (parents will n ot
    be coming into the school)
∗   Your child does NOT need any school supplies; teachers have purchased all that is needed for learning in the school; a school
    bag is needed
Preparing Your Child for Grade 1

∗   Validate nervous feelings
∗   Start the routine early - bedtime and waking; filling school bag with necessary
    items; NO TOYS AT SCHOOL
∗   Practice being organized:
    ∗   Tying shoes or Velcro
    ∗   Getting dressed – zippers and buttons
    ∗   Packing backpacks and putting them on
∗   Reading and saying their first and last name
∗   Review bus and walking safety rules
∗   Let your child be a part of the planning
∗   Visit the school, playground, and entry doors
∗   Practice phone number and address
∗   Engage in non-preferred tasks
∗   Students go to the washroom on their own; they need to be able to undo
    buttons and zippers on their own
∗   Practice cutting and colouring

Arrival Time

Drop off any time after 8:55 but not after 9:08
Students should proceed directly to their entry doors

Teachers will welcome students at the doors from 8:55 –
9:08

After 9:08 your child will need to enter through the main
door
• we expect students to be in their rooms ready to
  learn beginning promptly at 9:10, which means arriving at
  least 5 minutes early
