“I think what stands out the most about York is
the fact that, as a community, it has this immense
potential to make anyone and everyone feel at home.
I remember when I first arrived,
I felt as though I was meant to be here, that

  I BELONG HERE
and that feeling has never changed.”

“When I first came to York, I didn’t think of myself as a leader. Four years of
involvement with the York community — from launching an International
Student Mental Health campaign to mentoring and guiding new students
as a Residence Life Don — has enriched my education, developed my
compassion and built my confidence. Now I am working to create
progressive spaces for fellow students and giving back to the community
that welcomed me with open arms.”

“At first, I found the size of the campus
                           intimidating and worried about becoming
‘just a number.’ My York Orientation
experience helped me realize that there
were many opportunities to get involved,
so I joined a couple of clubs and
productions. Each year I got more involved
in student life, which led me to Winters
College Council, where, as president, I
Winters students worked with students, staff and professors
celebrate their victory to deliver educational and extracurricular
                                   experiences for Winters students.
York is built on student engagement and
I couldn’t imagine not having that be a
                                   part of my education.”

“I’ve learned so many valuable lessons as a Learning Skills
Peer. I have become an ambassador for life-long learning,
which has supplemented my desire to be a teacher.
I have learned so much about the foundational skills
that support life-long learning, like time management,
critical thinking and presentation skills, all of which
have helped me tremendously as a student.
   I was also able to

   BUILD CONFIDENCE,
   something that I undeniably lacked
in my first couple years at York.”

“When I came to York, I channeled my passion for sport, nutrition and training into
classroom learning where I met my mentor, Dr. Veronica Jamnik, Associate
  Professor in Kinesiology.

Dr. Jamnik’s classes were fantastic and she pushed
my learning and motivation to a new level.
By third year I was developing training programs for clients and working with
new firefighters conducting VO2 Max, 12-lead-EKG, acrophobia,
claustrophobia, strength and power output tests. As students we were
testing the future of first responders in Ontario.
I also volunteered with Boxing Ontario, doing fitness assessments for
young and aspiring athletes. Now I’m putting my learning into practice
every day with clients and fellow coaches.”

“I was just a 22-year-old Financial & Business Economics student when I made history on
Dragons’ Den with the Summary Scanner app which automatically summarizes any
document in seconds from just a picture. I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of
business and technology and taught myself to code while I was studying in my program.
Using different fields of artificial intelligence, my app converts images into text files,
generates study questions and promotes speed reading.
Throughout my education, I benefited from the support of professors and mentors.
Not only did my professors provide in-depth explanations of economics subjects,
they offered advice about networking and business strategy.”

“York has a unique Space Engineering
program that is not offered at any other
university in Canada, with faculty who are

SUPPORTIVE AND
COLLABORATIVE
and provide a great learning environment.
I really want to build rockets, spaceships
and space robots in the future, so this was
the ideal program for me to take.
In April 2019, I participated in the Fly a Rocket! Programme
hosted by the European Space Agency. I was one of just
24 students in the world selected to build a rocket at the
Andøya Space Center in Northern Norway. In this program,
I increased my knowledge of rocket science and orbital
mechanics and had the opportunity to apply what I was
learning at school to the industry.”

“The campus quickly became my home away from home.
Glendon is a tight-knit community. From starting new clubs,
planning orientation week and leading the dance team to
building an inner-campus fundraiser and being a former
student union president, there were endless ways for me to
contribute to the community and make an impact.
Getting involved is one of the best ways you can
learn more about yourself, learn from others and

  MAKE A
  MEANINGFUL
  CONTRIBUTION TO
  YOUR COMMUNITY.”
