LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: We recognize that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships with the
territories upon which York University campuses are located that precede the establishment of York University.
York University acknowledges its presence on the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations. The area known
as Tkaronto has been care taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Huron-Wendat.
It is now home to many First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities. We acknowledge the current treaty holders, the
Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory is subject of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant,
an agreement to peaceably share and care for the Great Lakes region.York by the numbers ______________________ 3

futurestudents.yorku.ca | 3“I think what stands out the most about York is the fact that, as a community, it has this immense potential to make anyone and everyone feel at home. I remember when I first arrived, I felt as though I was meant to be here, that I BELONG HERE and that feeling has never changed.” Vishwaveda Joshi • BA ’19, Anthropology and Political Science • Senior Don, Founders Residence, 2018-2019 • International Students Assistant, York International, 2018-2019 • Vice-Chair of the World University Services of Canada, Keele Campus chapter, 2016-2018 4 | 2021-2022 Undergraduate Students
“When I first came to York, I didn’t think of myself as a leader. Four years of
involvement with the York community — from launching an International
Student Mental Health campaign to mentoring and guiding new students
as a Residence Life Don — has enriched my education, developed my
compassion and built my confidence. Now I am working to create
progressive spaces for fellow students and giving back to the community
that welcomed me with open arms.”

classroom learning where I met my mentor, Dr. Veronica Jamnik, Associate
Professor in Kinesiology.
Dr. Jamnik’s classes were fantastic and she pushed
my learning and motivation to a new level.
By third year I was developing training programs for clients and working with

claustrophobia, strength and power output tests. As students we were
testing the future of first responders in Ontario.
I also volunteered with Boxing Ontario, doing fitness assessments for
young and aspiring athletes. Now I’m putting my learning into practice
every day with clients and fellow coaches.”
