                our
he year of the Horse is
                       an auspicious start to
                         sesquicentennial (150th)
                anniversary. Ever since the horse
                was domesticated by man 6,000
                years ago in central Eurasia,
                it has changed civilisations in
                China, India, the Middle East
                and Europe. Horse chariotry
                and cavalry altered the nature
                of warfare and consequently the
                course of human history. But,
                beyond the battlefield, horse
                power afforded great advances
                in transport, agriculture, industry
                and science. We certainly cannot
                imagine what life might have
                been had our four-legged friend
                not existed. Over the millennium
                many accolades, tributes had been
made to the horse. The horse is life.
The horse is a man’s spirit, it’s soul,
it’s wealth, it’s ally. The horse lives
with man in the sun and the wind,
in the snows and in the rain. A
horseman trusts his steed and his
heart and feels the rhythm of his
body and the wide world which
he inhabits. He sees what his horse
sees far, far away in the long great
                distance from which tonight, he
may come. Yet distance is nothing
                to him: he may fly like the wind;
the wind his brother, the sky his
sister, the sun and the moon his
mother and father. The snows and
rivers and seas of grass are his
cousins and his home. Horses are
to be venerated. Horses are to be
                revered. Horses are sacred. Men,

Editor’s note without horses are nothing. These
are some of the praises to the horse
                by our forbears.

It was also a day to remember for the former Perth trainer.
Not only did he win the 2,000m classic, thus joining a host
of big names to do so, it was also his best afternoon yet in
Malaysia when he saddled a total of four winners.
                                                                                                            Harmeet Singh Gill

for Edwards in Australia before both horse and trainer came
to Malaysia and was also the horse who gave Edwards a
winning start in the country when he won his debut in
February last year.
But the Australian gelding had indifferent form after
that and only blossomed since mid-November when
winning four consecutive races, culminating with his
victory in the Gold Cup.
Ridden by Harmeet Singh Gill, Monsili was kept
well off the pace early but hugging the rails just as his
stablemate Money Machine (Testa Rossa - Trisavente by Sir
Tristram) took the lead going into the back straight.
Iwa Antilia took over in the back straight and made
a breakaway but soon came under pressure at the
600m. Money Machine regained the lead, chased by the
favourite Taichi Master entering the home straight.
