.3 1st October 2021 www.hadrianacademy.co.uk office@hadrianacademy.co.uk Dear parents and carers, Welcome back to a new academic year. It has been wonderful to have the children back at school and welcome them into a new year group. During the first week back I had the pleasure of leading class assemblies and introducing the children to their new student leadership team. I took the opportunity to take pictures of our new student leaders and I have included them in the next section of this newsletter. First, I wanted to briefly explain some plans we have for this academic year. We have been looking at the lessons we learnt last year and looking forward to what we think the future might look like. Last year, although disrupted by COVID, was less interrupted by trips, events and visitors than in the previous years. For many children, this uninterrupted routine was actually really helpful in managing their anxieties and helping them to focus on their studies. That being said, we really missed the sense of community that coming together in performance gave us. A virtual nativity, although brilliant, is not quite the same. We are also really proud of our reputation for performance and the arts and we want to continue this. We started to plan out the chances that the children would have to take part in a polished performance. We wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to map out your year (and book time off work to come and watch). We also wanted to avoid having all of the performances at the same time, as we were worried that if COVID cases started to increase, a whole school’s worth of performances would have to be cancelled. We have spread them out throughout the year and we think that this gives us the best chance of them all going ahead safely. I got slightly carried away and have tried to include dress up days and other events to help you organise your year. I have colour coded them so you can easily see when your child’s year group will be performing. If your child is an enthusiastic performer, encourage them to join choir, street dance or Lamda as this will give them more opportunities to produce polished performances. Finally, although I have tried to include as much as possible, there will be other trips and sporting events added to this as we go along. There is a calendar on the school website that you can add to your Google calendar that also has the main events, and letters will be sent out for all activities closer to the time. In person performance (parents will be the audience) Other event where parents can join in person Dress up day Hannah Bennett

Parent Consultations Monday 18th & Tuesday 19th October From 3.30pm We are pleased to announce that we will be using Parents’ Evening Manager (PEM) provided by ParentMail to book your child/ren’s parent consultations. Due to COVID-19 these consultations will take place via Zoom once again. Simply log onto your ParentMail account on Monday 4th October from 4.30pm in order to book your 10 minute time slot. Parking at Hadrian Avenue and surrounding streets/entrances Please always park considerately even if running late and do not park over our neighbours’ driveways or the grass verges. This affects both the wellbeing of our local residents and the safety of our children, walking to and from school. Also remember to watch your speed in the vicinity of the school and to always be cautious of children. I know that the vast majority of you always park appropriately and with consideration for others. Thank you for your co-operation. Can parents please make sure that all items of school uniform are labelled clearly with your child’s name. IF IT MOVES, LABEL IT! Everything that comes into school should have a label attached. You would be amazed at the amount of unclaimed lost property we accumulated last year. If items are named we can easily reunite them with their owners. You do not have to have labels - even a permanent marker or biro can be used. If you would like to pay for your child to have a daily carton of milk then visit the Cool Milk website at the following link. All orders received on Tuesdays before 4pm will receive milk from Monday the following week. If your child is FSM or Pupil Premium and you have not registered them for milk then please contact Miss White in the school office.
In science this half term year 1 have been looking at different materials and their properties. This week we conducted a scientific experiment to find out which material would be best to repair an umbrella. Year 1 have been writing about the Toy Story toys in literacy. Can you spot the toys who have been visiting us? We have enjoyed having them visit us each day!
Year 2 have been learning all about the Great Fire of London! We have made houses, made some amazing art work using water colours and chalks with a silhouette and met Samuel Peyps!
Year 2 also had a visit from Jo from Central Beds Council to talk to us about being safe when crossing the road and the Green Cross Code. We know to stop, look, listen and walk across the road. We also know that we should double check for electric cars and bikes as they are trickier to hear on the road. Year 4 have been learning lots about the water cycle and how the process occurs. We recently made 'water cycle bags' where you can watch the cycle take place! The children have been really enjoying this unit. Feel free to ask them what evaporation, condensation and precipitation is. We have certainly been seeing lots of precipitation recently!
Year 3 are doing a writing unit on ‘Horrid Henry’s Perfect Day’. They thoroughly enjoyed working together, pretending to be Perfect Peter and Horrid Henry. They had to interview the characters to understand them better. In science Dexter, Sofia and Bobbi-Anne were busy planting cress seeds, ready to write about what they did and what happens next. I think they may well be having a taste of the cress too!
