out of classes and taken to the principal. The principal,
after pressing Isak to admit that he was high or up to no
good, would march him to the nurse’s office to check his
blood pressure. Although there was no evidence that Isak
was high or drug dealing, these incidents became routine
and “undermined [my] sense of self.”
He vividly recalled that one day, while on a school bus with
his classmates singing songs on the way to a French camp,
a teacher jumped on the bus and demanded Isak to “come
with me.” She then searched his backpack and him, yet she
found nothing. Isak said these repeated incidents had the
effect of him “losing interest in school.” He also developed
a strong sense of injustice. Eventually, the school learned
that the drug dealer was a white boy. But even after the
school learned that the drug dealer was not Isak, no one
apologized to him. No one tried to make it right.
Isak described standing on Lake Street with a friend hol-
ding his new video camera one day. They saw a police
officer peak into his neighbors’ parked cars, one after the
other, and his friend video-recorded it. He said police offi-
cers frequently looked for “members of my community
doing something wrong” when they were not.
As Isak recounted his high school years, a theme began
to develop about the police being out to get members of
his community, which now was all black, rather than the
friends of many races he had had before. The police that
worked inside South High School treated the students in
this inner-city school badly.
Isak could recall what age he was based upon which black
person died at the hands of the police, including Aura

2014, Akai Gurley in 2014, Gabriella Nevarez in 2014, Tamir
