G.Y.C CHESS AT GYC Congratulations to Oscar Breslin (R3) and Luke Turner (B1) for their outstanding achievements in chess this year. On 6 September, Oscar Breslin and Luke Turner participated in the Interschool Chess Tournament for the Hobart area. This was the first time that there had been a GYC participation since 2015. It was also a record number of schools competing, with a total of 9 schools, colleges and high schools alike, involved. Both players were the highest rated in the tournament, and as a result were on the highest tables for most of the tournament. Both Luke and Oscar ended the tournament in the individual top 10, with the latter winning the tourna- ment. Considering our small team size, we managed to still do well in the team’s component, coming 7th out of the 9 Schools. We would like to thank Mrs Martini for organizing the Tournament and Andrew Martini for supervising. We also would like to warmly congratulate GYC Old Scholar, Dylan Kaufman (2016), on being named as a fi- nalist in the 2021 Tasmanian Training Awards. Dylan was nominated in the Apprentice of the Year category. This award is presented to an apprentice who has been out- standing in all aspects of their trade. Whilst Dylan wasn’t the winner on this occasion, to be named as a finalist is an outstanding achievement in itself. Undertaking the VET courses at Guilford Young College in 2015/16 prepared Dylan well for a smooth transition into his career. After he successfully completed Certificates I and II in Auto- motive Vocational Preparation under the watchful eye of Automotive teacher, Brett Devereux, he knew he wanted to pursue a career in the automotive industry. Dylan undertook two work placements organised by Brett and Dal- las Harding from Work and Training at Co-Op Toyota in 2016 where he was offered the opportunity to complete a traineeship. Dylan was nominated by Brett for the Tasmanian Training Awards VET in Schools in 2016, Tasmanian Training Awards Trainee of the Year 2018, Nomi- nated for the Work and Training Awards 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021 and Win- ner of Work and Training 2nd Year Apprentice of the Year 2019. After completing his qualification this year he applied for and gained em- ployment as a Customer Service and Sales Consultant - Shannons, Hobart where he continues to speak with customers about his passion – everything automotive – while gaining additional skills in customer service, insurance and technologies in order to pursue new opportunities in the automotive industry. 8 G.Y.C news | 23 SEPT

GEOGRAPHY AT GYC Geography students from Guilford Young Col- lege recently went on a field trip to the Southern Forests to explore how forests are managed on a local level. Students met with Sustainable Timber Tasmania (STT) Forest Management Coordinator, Jason Lawson, who explored forest management and the multiple values that need to be consid- ered when interacting with forest landscapes. Students had a chance to interpret landscape level planning maps and consider the role of for- ests in global carbon cycles. To help understand the reforestation process, the class visited the STT seed centre in Geeveston. Students met with Harvey Watson, Forest Officer Forest Manage- ment and Kylie Kemp, Trainee Forester, to learn about the important role of collecting, storing and sowing seeds for future forests.
