No. 102 July

                               A note from the Headteacher
It seems incredible that the term is already drawing to a close and we are breaking up for
the summer. As you can see from the contents of the newsletter, we have had a fun and
busy term once again.
We have said goodbye to our Year 11 students and welcomed the new Year 7 students for
a few days. I look forward to working with all of you and your children again in the next
academic year and wish you a great summer holiday.
As always we are very proud of the students at Friars Academy and would like to remind
you of a few of our expectations to ensure that everything is in place for September :
full school uniform should be worn at all times including black shoes,
hairshould be of a natural colour and not extreme in style,
students are only allowed one plain stud earring in each ear (which must be removed for
PE lessons) and a watch. No other jewellery may be worn.
Mrs Ijewsky.

July saw our final Pride of Friars Tea for this school year. Four pupils and their
parents were invited into school to have a cup of tea and enjoy seeing some work that
their young people were proud of. Congratulations to La-Tonnia,
Jack P, Amiee and Jesse. Students were picked because they have
been working exceptionally hard in different aspects of school life
                       and demonstrating the school values.

Did you know that in the past six months, almost two-thirds of
children groomed online were targeted on just three platforms:
Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram.
Please keep your child safe online by talking to them about the
issues involved with social networking sites.

Our final Theme Week of this year was entitled 'The Best of British'
and was a celebration of everything that represents our nation!
There were many activities spread out across the week, splitting the
classes up with students from every year group in each team!
The week finished off with a 'Friars Festival of Britain', opened by
the Mayor and Mayoress of Wellingborough and showed off the work from the week
which ranged from Historical baking, Shakespeare's Best bits, the best of British Films, a
street party, work/film about Charlie Chaplin and many more. The week was very
successful and really encapsulates the spirit of Friars Academy.

Wicksteed Park
On Wednesday 13th June, the Rotary Club Hatton, took the Yr 7 pupils to Wicksteed Park
once again and provided them with a great lunch. The students thoroughly enjoyed
themselves by getting wet on the Water Chute and challenging themselves on the high
                            slides. They were extremely
                            patient in the queues and
                            coped well with the heat.
A great day out for everyone!

Sywell Country Park On Thursday 7th June, Year 7 visited Sywell Country Park as part of
the Art curriculum. Pupils enjoyed exploring the park and producing drawings, wax rub-
bings, paintings and collages. They also experienced taking artistic photographs of the
surroundings. The weather was lovely and a great time was had by all.

8LM Go Back in Time to the Tudors
8LM had a wonderful taster trip to Delapre Abbey. They learned what life was like at the
Nunnery and experienced some of the jobs done there in Tudor times. The students all
had a chance to do some spinning and weaving; identifying and tasting medieval herbs;
and writing with a quill and using seals.
We then moved forward 100 years and met Zouch Tate,
owner of Delapré, staunch protestant and parliamentarian.
Here students had opportunities to do lots of object han-

Sports Hall Athletics
We took a team of students to take part in a sports hall Athletics festival at Maplefields.
Events included, Javelin, standing long jump, target throw and a team relay race. All of the
students behaved and performed brilliantly and eventually managed to
finish a very close second, despite winning 3 of the events outright. Well
done to all those that took part.

Wednesday 11th July was the 2018 Friars Academy Sports Day!
All the students and staff were split into four teams named after British Olympic and
Paralympic Athletes - Ellie Simmonds, Jonnie Peacock, Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah.
Events started at 9.30am which included Fun events, Field events and some ‘Have a Go’
events on the playground. After a break for lunch the afternoon Track events started at
1.05pm. All events were an opportunity for pupils to win points for their team as well as
stickers for themselves. Staff were also awarding stickers to pupils they saw displaying
qualities of self-belief, passion, teamwork, determination, honesty and respect
throughout the day.
All of the students had a fantastic day and there were some outstanding displays of pas-
sion, determination, teamwork and self-belief which made the PE Department incredibly
proud!
Congratulations to Team Mo Farah who were this years winners!
A big thank you to all the parents and carers who came and supported.
