A.R. Rahman’s music to Mukesh
Chhabra’s film ‘Dil Bechara’
Composed by the Oscar-winning legend, A. R. Rahman, the entire
music album of Mukesh Chhabra’s upcoming film, Dil Bechara,
released today as a celebration of the legacy of the late
actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who will be seen starring in the
film along with debutante, Sanjana Sanghi.

The soundtrack to Dil Bechara comprises a diverse mix of songs
with the film’s eponymous title track, sung by Rahman himself.
It is a vibrant celebration of life’s ups and downs, diving
into the soul of a generation that wears its heart on its
sleeve. Maskhari, a lighthearted song about friendship,
features Sunidhi Chauhan and Hriday Gattani on the vocals,
while Shreya Ghoshal and Mohit Chauhan’s Taare Gin plucks at
the strings of new love. On Khulke Jeena Ka, an adaptation of
Rahman’s unreleased Tamil track Kannil Oru Thali, Arijit Singh
and Shashaa Tirupathi sing about the adventures of youth. Main
Tumhara, sung by Jonita Gandhi and Hriday Gattani, is a
pivotal song on the film’s soundtrack; a revelatory track tied
to the film’s mystery. Originally incomplete in the story,
Kizzie (Sanjana Sanghi) and Manny (Sushant Singh Rajput)—the
protagonists of Dil Bechara—are on a quest to complete this
very song.

Says A.R. Rahman, “Composing music doesn’t have any formula,
it is a thing of the heart. When I write songs, I let them
breathe for some time and then present it to the director. It
was a great experience collaborating with Mukesh Chhabra on
this film; his enthusiasm is infectious. This whole album is
carefully curated because the film has so much heart, and now,
memories of Sushant. It was a pleasure to work with lyricist
Amitabh Bhattacharya on this soundtrack of love. The songs are
eclectic and feature an amazing lineup of India’s top singers
and musicians. I hope you will like the album.”
A.R. Rahman's music to Mukesh Chhabra's film 'Dil Bechara' - New Asian Post
Director of the film, Mukesh Chhabra says, “Befitting the
story of the film, its music album is an emotional
rollercoaster of romance, friendship and the odds pitted
against two young people in love. Having A. R. Rahman aboard
for the music of my directorial debut is a dream come true.
What’s amazing about the genius of Rahman in this album is
that it beautifies the narrative and takes it forward.”

A Hindi adaptation of John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars, Dil
Bechara is a story of Kizie and Manny, two ordinary people who
fall in love as a tragic turn of events close in on them.
Produced by Fox Star Studios, directed by Mukesh Chhabra and
starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi, Dil Bechara
will be streaming on Disney Hotstar on the 24th of July,
2020. Released by Sony Music India and composed by A. R.
Rahman, the music album of the upcoming film is available to
listeners now.

Impact of COVID-19 crisis on
BAME-led Indies in UK
Television
A third of BAME-led TV production companies are facing serious
financial hardship as a direct result of the COVID-19
pandemic, new research has revealed. Organisations were also
found to be either in ‘financial distress’ or ‘financial
crisis’ and said that they would most like to see ring-fenced
funding for BAME-led* independents to support the post-COVID
recovery.

A study carried out at Birmingham City University’s Sir Lenny
Henry Centre for Media Diversity, assessed the impact of
coronavirus on independent companies led by Black, Asian and
minority ethnic professionals. Academics surveyed 20 UK
organisations to find out how their work and businesses had
been hit by the global pandemic. It showed that two out of
three organisations were losing money or commissions as a
result of the virus, with 29 per cent of businesses saying
they were either in ‘financial distress’ or ‘financial
crisis’.

Other findings from the report include:

Nearly half of organisations (48 per cent) are worse off
as a result of the pandemic
The vast majority of BAME-led indies have been unable to
     access much needed development funds
The vast majority of BAME-led indies have not received
     government financial support
The vast majority of BAME-led indies have not applied
     for industry relief funds
This is clearly a sector that wants and needs targeted
financial support for BAME-led indies, specifically from
the industry and more generally from the government.
20 per cent of companies had gained commissions
     specifically related to COVID-19.

Marcus Ryder, multi-award winning journalist and Visiting
Professor at Birmingham City University’s Sir Lenny Henry
Centre for Media Diversity, said: “BAME-led indies must be at
the centre of any policies devised by broadcasters and the
government to help them survive an unprecedented global
pandemic. We believe this report is important in demonstrating
why that’s necessary.”

The COVID-19 pandemic and growth of the Black Lives Matter
Movement has shone a light on equality and representation
across a number of sectors, including the media.
The Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity was launched in
March, with the aim of examining representation across the
industry including journalism, acting, film, TV and radio in
both front-of-house and behind the scenes roles.

* The research categorised a company as being BAME-led where
it had a CEO, MD or other senior leaders from a BAME
background.

Ramadan in lockdown part of
Collecting COVID project
The Museum of London is collecting images, objects and shared
experiences of Ramadan in lockdown as part of the Collecting
COVID project. The aim to reflect how the Muslim community
experienced Ramadan during lockdown by sharing images, objects
and first-hand experiences to ensure future generations of
Londoners will be able to learn about and understand this
extraordinary period. Ramadan this year was from the 23rd
April to 23rd May, at a time when London and the rest of the
UK were at the height of lockdown. With restrictions in place
such as social distancing and the closure of mosques,
communities were unable to celebrate the festival in their
usual way.

The museum has captured this through different strands
including collecting an audio recording of the public calls
for prayers at the Musallaa an-Noor mosque in Hackney,
documenting the experiences of young Muslims in West London
and working with seven groups of families or households from
various London boroughs.

Aisling Serrant, Community Engagement Manager at the Museum of
London Docklands, who is leading on the family strand of the
project said: “Some of the key parts of Ramadan, such as
spending time with family and friends and visiting the mosque,
have not been able to take place this year or had to be
adapted to virtual or socially distant means. It was important
to capture the experiences of families at this time as it was
an unprecedented experience for the many Muslims living in
London. We are in the process of collecting a range of items
ranging from photographs, film and audio recordings and
physical objects to tell the stories of these families.”

While the project is ongoing with objects and experiences
still being collected, a few reflections from participants
have been collated for release now:

Nafisa from Waltham Forest said: “Ramadan this year was in
some ways strange but in many ways more meaningful, focused
and somehow we were more spiritually connected even though we
were ‘disconnected’ from the wider community. My main
reflections were how there is beauty in everything and
pleasure in simple acts, how we can stop and take stock of our
friends and family and be grateful always for the peace we
live in despite the uncertainty of the world and to continue
to pray, do small, consistent good deeds and remember God in
good times too.

I hope future generations looking at our experience will
ponder and reflect on their own lives, their own relationships
and be grateful for the little things and find value in non-
material things. That they will see that whatever life throws
at them, it is important to find the silver lining. To have
hope in the darkest of times and to take resilience, strength
and comfort from our stories.”

Iffath from Croydon said: “I am an Anaesthetic Nurse and
wanted to take part in the Museum of London’s collecting
project in order to represent the frontline NHS staff who
embraced this challenging Ramadan and allow future generations
to learn that fasting in PPE was challenging physically,
however, mentally it strengthens your mind and helps you grow
as a person. My main reflections of celebrating Ramadan in
lockdown were how important it is to slow down in life, absorb
the beauty around us, and finally, that there is always so
much more we can do for our community.”

The Collecting COVID project is hoping to collect both
physical and digital objects, reflecting the voices and
experiences of a broad range of Londoners. From those working
on the front line to those quietly working in the background,
from parents turned home-school support to young people online
gaming, the museum wants to collect objects from those that
can tell the story of London in lockdown.

Raja Kumari releases ‘Peace’,
a mantra of positivity and
optimism
The trailblazing rapper, singer, songwriter and dancer Raja
Kumari today released ‘Peace’, the new single from her
forthcoming album debut on the Mass Appeal India label. An
unexpectedly chill-tempo jam coupled with dreamy immersive
beats; ‘I got peace all around me, ain’t no drama these days’
a reflective Kumari affirms in the single that marries Khari
Brown’s layered production with Elvis Brown’s distinctive
lyrics.

The Indian-American music trailblazer takes the listener on a
euphoric journey through her tranquil headspace, processing
reality through her songwriting, accompanied by a cinematic
video depiction featuring her revelling in nature as a visual
reflection of her enlightenment. Delving into the themes of
manifestation, optimism and spirituality, the R&B single is
ultimately hopeful, empathetic, and supremely welcome at a
moment when it’s easy to start feeling like everything looks
pretty uncertain and unsettling.

Tough topics to wrap one’s head around, for sure, but Raja
Kumari seems undaunted by the prospect, she elaborates,
“Mentally, I knew I had to reset in order to focus on myself
and my family, and this song was written as a mantra of
positive affirmations for peace in my life. We shot this video
in the middle of quarantine. Although I’m used to having a big
crew on set to handle everything from location scouting to
glam and makeup, all I had in LA was me and Shawn Thomas
(long-time director and collaborator) and the help of my
manager and assistant (all socially distanced with masks!). It
definitely was a challenge to start from the beginning again,
doing all the styling and hair and makeup myself. The video
was shot between Antelope Valley and Mt Baldy, the beautiful
scenic area behind my parent’s home. Solitude had been a huge
theme in the beginning of quarantine and as the world opens
up, I wanted to encourage people to look within themselves to
find true inner peace.”

Devraj Sanyal, MD & CEO of UMG, India & South Asia states,
“These last three and some months have been the worst phase in
the world with uncertainty and negativity like we’ve never
experienced before. So, for us to have a song of positive
manifestations by Raja Kumari is a welcomed one not just for
our roster, but for the world at large. Every time I hear
‘PEACE’ I feel an incredible sense of calm and I’m sure you
will too. It’s classic Raja and it’s a fun one too, with the
usual trappings of her inimitable style and song. ”

Commonwealth Short Story
Prize 2020 won by Kritika
Pandey
Kritika Pandey was announced as the winner of the 2020
Commonwealth Short Story Prize for her story ‘The Great Indian
Tee and Snakes’ on 30th June 2020. The 2020 Prize, which
attracted over 5000 entries from 49 countries, was judged by
an international panel of writers, representing each of the
five regions of the Commonwealth. Chaired by Nii Ayikwei
Parkes, the 2020 panel comprised South African writer and
musician Mohale Mashigo (Judge for Africa), Executive Director
of the Singapore Books Council William Phuan (Asia), Canadian
author Heather O’Neill (Canada and Europe), Trinidadian
scholar and writer Elizabeth Walcott-Hackshaw (Caribbean), and
Australian writer and arts organiser Nic Low (Pacific).

‘I’ve experienced every possible emotion ever since I received
the news. At times, I’m overwhelmed with joy, gratitude, and a
sense of fulfilment or reeling with disbelief. At other times,
I’m devastated by the fate of my fictional characters who seem
all too real to me, a feeling compounded by the tragedies
presently unfolding around us. However, more than anything
else, this prize strengthens my will to write. It tells me
that all those days when I lock myself in my room to stare
into a computer screen, unsettled and unsure, might just be a
worthwhile way of engaging with the world. It reminds me that
I must, therefore, continue to inquire into the human
condition, to make sense of existence, to listen carefully, to
resist, and to hope,” said Kritika Pandey.

Kritika Pandey’s winning story, ‘The Great Indian Tee and
Snakes’, tells of an unlikely friendship which reaches across
religious divides, set against the background of a tea
seller’s stall. She writes of two young people trying to solve
an age-old riddle of human existence: how can love overcome
the forces of hatred and prejudice? Pandey says, ‘I created a
strong-willed character of a Hindu girl who chooses to love a
Muslim boy, even though she knows that she is not “supposed
to”.’

The award was presented by the Chair of the 2020 judging
panel, acclaimed Ghanaian writer and editor, Nii Ayikwei
Parkes in an online ceremony. An extract from the story was
read at the ceremony by award-winning Bollywood actress Swara
Bhasker.

Synopsis

This collection is titled after the overall 2020 winner by
India s Kritika Pandey a sharp, unsparing tale of two young
people whose paths cross briefly before they are separated by
hatred and prejudice. The other winning stories by Innocent
Chizaram Ilo (Nigeria), Reyah Martin (Scotland), Brian S. Heap
(Jamaica) and Andrea E. Macleod (Australia) are haunting and
poignant tales of different realities, both starkly familiar
and at a slight, dreamlike remove.

‘The Great India Tee and Snakes is a gut-punch of a story,
remarkable because, in spite of its fraught subject matter, it
never neglects the beauty of the world in which the story
unfolds. Kritika Pandey infuses the tale with empathy and
balance, allowing the characters to inhabit themselves fully,
while dragging the narrative to its inevitable end. It’s a
story that asks important questions about identity, prejudice
and nationhood, using metaphors with devastating effect, while
still brimming with its author’s revelry in the possibilities
of language. Its charged conclusion is all the more shocking
given that most of it is set at a tea seller’s stall and its
energy derives from a few looks between a boy and a girl. My
fellow judges and I loved the story when we first read it, and
love it more each time we read it. Congratulations to
Kritika!,” said Nii Ayikwei Parkes, Chair of the Judges.

About Kritika Pandey

final year candidate for a Master of Fine Arts at the

The acclaimed film Moothon directed by Kerala child actress &
film star turned director Geetu Mohandas, is produced by
Cannes darling Anurag Kashyap; a gritty, fast paced, slum
gangster story with a surprising LGBTQ+ romance seeded within,
exploring conflicting emotions of love and loss.

The MisEducation of Bindu directed by Prarthana Mohan is a
coming of age comedy, starring Hollywood rising star Megan
Suri, indie actor David Arquette and Priyanka Bose who also
stars in Pareeksha. Tackling issues such as bullying, fitting
in and identity, the film focuses on the peculiar and chaotic
world of teenage misfits as the naïve Bindu arrives in an
American high school and disastrously gets a crush on the
wrong boy.

Siddharth Roy Kapur acquires
rights to East India Company
tale
Indian producer Siddharth Roy Kapur has launched one of the
most ambitious television series to date, based on the
duplicitous rise of the British Empire’s East India Company in
India. His production house, Roy Kapur Films, announced that
it has just acquired the audio-visual rights to William
Dalrymple’s masterpiece bestseller, ‘The Anarchy: The
Relentless Rise of The East India Company‘.

Roy Kapur, who has produced ‘Dangal’, India’s highest grossing
film of all time, and most recently produced the Priyanka
Chopra Jonas-starrer, ‘The Sky Is Pink’ and the acclaimed
Netflix Original, ‘Yeh Ballet’, is now looking to produce one
of the biggest international TV productions in history,
harnessing his 15 years of cinema experience to collaborate
with varied international minds and creatives for this global
production.

‘The Anarchy‘ was recently listed by former US President
Barack Obama as amongst his Top 10 Recommended Books of 2019.
Encompassing a period of more than two hundred years, from
1599 to 1802, it traces the relentless rise of The East India
Company against the decline and fall of the storied Mughal
Empire. It provides a remarkable account of how a provincial
trading start-up, run by thirty people from an office only
five windows wide in a nondescript London building, became
rulers of an entire sub-continent; in the process establishing
the richest and most powerful empire in the history of the
world. Now, more than ever before, has the telling of the
history of British colonialism around the world become so
significant.

In August 1765 the East India Company defeated the young
Mughal emperor and forced him to establish in his richest
provinces a new administration run by English merchants who
collected taxes through means of a ruthless private army –
what we would now call an act of involuntary privatisation.

The East India Company’s founding charter authorised it to
‘wage war’ and it had always used violence to gain its ends.
But the creation of this new government marked the moment that
the East India Company ceased to be a conventional
international trading corporation dealing in silks and spices
and became something much more unusual: an aggressive colonial
power in the guise of a multinational business. In less than
four decades it had trained up a security force of around
200,000 men – twice the size of the British army – and had
subdued an entire subcontinent, conquering first Bengal and
finally, in 1803, the Mughal capital of Delhi itself. The
Company’s reach stretched until almost all of India south of
the Himalayas was effectively ruled from a boardroom in
London.

The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the
world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be
replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based
thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows
wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his
most ambitious and riveting book to date, William Dalrymple
tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been
told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first
global corporate power.

Roy Kapur, former MD of The Walt Disney Company India and
current President of the Producers Guild of India, will be
bringing together a diverse, international team of writers to
create a series of ambitious scale and quality. It is his
conviction that this is a story that needs to be shared with
the world now more than ever before, as the alarming social,
political and economic consequences of imperialism and
colonialism have finally come into the public consciousness.

Siddharth Roy Kapur says, “I believe that stories that are
compelling, relevant and authentic have the potential to
resonate with audiences across all nationalities and cultures.
William Dalrymple’s epic tale of The East India Company is one
such story. While a debate rages today around the world about
the increasing power of giant corporations and powerful
individuals to wield control over minds and nations, what
could be more relevant to global viewers than the true story
of the takeover of an entire subcontinent by a small trading
company! We are delighted to be working with William to bring
to life this fascinating tableau of incredible characters,
each playing off the other in their quest to exercise dominion
over what was then the richest subcontinent on the face of the
Earth.”

The author, William Dalrymple, who is also on board as a
consultant for the project says, “I don’t think I have ever
written a book more obviously crying out to be adapted than
The Anarchy and I can’t think of anyone in India better to
adapt it than Siddharth Roy Kapur. I’m very excited looking at
the initial treatment note, talking about the various ways to
bring this book alive and to bring the characters I’ve been
living with over the last 6 years onto the screen, so that
everyone else can see them in flesh and blood. It’s an
incredibly exciting moment and I have high expectations of
this project!”

Aditi Rao Hydari & Jayasurya
star in ‘Sufiyum Sujatayum’
Malayalam film ‘Sufiyum Sujatayum’ starring Aditi Rao Hydari &
Jayasurya makes its global premiere on Amazon Prime Video on
3rd July 2020. Directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas, Sufiyum
Sujatayum is produced by Vijay Babu under his banner of Friday
Film House.

“Our endeavour is to create something which leaves behind a
lasting impact and Sufiyum Sujatayum is a film made exactly on
those lines. The theme of the movie is one that hasn’t been
explored very often. The story is nuanced and complex, yet
underlines one simple, universal truth – that love knows no
rationality or bounds. There would not have been a more
perfect choice than Aditi Rao Hydari and Jayasurya for the
respective roles as both are known to do justice to every
character that they portray. The music makes the movie a
fitting tribute to the all-important emotion of love. With the
movie releasing on Amazon Prime Video we are glad that the
film will reach a global audience allowing them to revel in
Malayalam cinema,” commented producer Vijay Babu.

“Sufiyum Sujatayum is a special film for me. I been lucky to
work with some incredible people across India, and this film
marks my debut as the leading lady of a Malayalam film,” said
Aditi Rao Hydari.

Synopsis

Sujata (mute – played by Aditi Rao Hydari) is in love with her
neighbour, a Sufi priest (Dev Mohan) but her father gets her
married off to a well-do-to NRI, in Dubai. Ten years have
passed since and she thinks that she’s left that love in her
past, until one day, she gets a call. Her husband (Rajeev –
played by Jayasurya) decides to bring her back to the village.
What follows, forms the crux of Sufiyum Sujatayum, a musical
love story.

“The Malayalam film industry is known for rolling out good
stories,” said Jayasurya, one of the biggest superstars in the
Malayalam film industry. “Sufiyum Sujatayum too keeps up with
the tradition and depicts a story of a beautiful girl with an
incomplete love-story. I play the role of the husband to
Aditi’s character. An interesting and nuanced role of a
husband that knows of his wife’s love for another man, and
tries to find ways to keep his family together. There’s a lot
that we’re trying to convey through the film and one will have
to watch the movie and be part of it to know how beautifully
these sequences take place“.

The film is shot by cinematographer Anu Moothedath and edited
by Deepu Joseph. The soulful music in the film is composed by
the talented M Jayachandran with lyrics penned by Hari Narayan
and songs sung by Sudeep Palanad. The film is brought together
by executive producer Vinay Babu.

Sufiyum Sujatayum released on Amazon Prime Video on 3rd July
2020.

An Extraordinary Life: A
Biography of Manohar Parrikar
Over the last two decades, the exploits of one man, an IIT-
Bombay alumnus, changed the way mainstream India looked at Goa
and the political goings-on in the country’s smallest state.
An Extraordinary Life traces the life and times of Manohar
Parrikar through the informed voices of his relatives,
friends, foes, bureaucrats and IIT contemporaries. The daily
battles of a gifted individual are brought to the fore as he
encounters love and vices. But more importantly, it showcases
his rise in politics from the son of a grocery store owner in
a nondescript town, a sanghachalak in Mapusa town, an
Opposition MLA and leader, to a chief minister (on multiple
occasions) and, finally, to a defence minister.

Pegged as a ‘Zero-to Hero’ story, this is the story of the man
who changed the way mainstream India looked at Goa and the
political goings-on in India’s smallest state. Manohar
Parrikar came from a humble background and rose to become one
of the most sought after leaders of Goa, where he undertook
the role of chief minister four times. A nuanced and sensitive
narration of the life and times of Manohar Parrikar, this book
will be an insightful and captivating read, complete with the
informed voices of his relatives, friends, foes, bureaucrats
and IIT contemporaries. The authors, Sadguru Patil and
Mayabhushan Nagvenkar, have written and interviewed the
politician many times over the course of their careers,
closely followed his rise in politics and witnessed the many
battles he had to undergo in his life.

“Manohar Parrikar was a towering personality, who defined an
era in Goa’s politics, after the turbulent 1990s which
produced 13 chief ministers in a decade” says co-author
Sadguru Patil. He adds, “A four-time Chief Minister and
Defence Minister, he had the talent, intellect and the drive
to achieve, perhaps even more“.

Commenting on the book, Mayabhushan Nagvenkar says, “The
biography is in part, a lively scrapbook of his Tom Sawyer-
like childhood and youth, as well as a no-holds-barred report
card of his subsequent political journey, through the voices
of people who knew him, many of them intimately.”

A Dutiful Boy: A memoir of a
gay Muslim’s journey by
Mohsin Zaidi
‘A Dutiful Boy: A memoir of a gay Muslim’s journey to
acceptance’ by Mohsin Zaidi is a coming of age memoir about
growing up queer in a strict Muslim household. Mohsin grew up
in a poor pocket of east London, in a devout shia Muslim
community. His family were close-knit and religiously
conservative. From a young age, Mohsin felt different but in a
home where being gay was inconceivable he also felt very
alone.

Outside of home Mohsin went to a failing inner city school
where gang violence was a fact of life. As he grew up life
didn’t seem to offer teenage Mohsin any choices: he was
disenfranchised from opportunity and isolated from his family
as a closet gay Muslim.

But Mohsin had incredible drive and became the first person
from his school to go to Oxford University. At university came
the newfound freedom to become the man his parents never
wanted him to be. But when he was confronted by his father and
a witch doctor invited to ‘cure’ him Mohsin had to make a
difficult choice.

Mohsin’s story takes harrowing turns but it is full of life
and humour, and, ultimately, it is an inspiring story about
breaking through life’s barriers.
