PLAY FAIR ...
“Play the course as you find it; play the ball as it lies. If you can’t do either then play fair. In order to play fair, you need to know the rules of golf.”

     NEAREST POINT OF RELIEF
From experience and feedback, a lot of golfers
interpret their “nearest point of relief” (NPR) as the
point that is most ‘convenient’ for them when taking
     relief.
The definition of the “nearest point of relief” is
the reference point for taking relief without penalty
from the interference by an immoveable obstruction
(Rule 24-2), an abnormal ground condition (Rule
25-1) or a wrong putting green (Rule 25-3). It is the
point on the course nearest to where the ball lies:
     i. that is not nearer the hole, and
ii. where, if the ball were so positioned, no
interference by the condition from which relief is
sought would exist for the stroke the player would
have made from the original position if the condition
     were not there.

Note: In order to determine the nearest point of
relief accurately, the player should use the club with
which he would have made his next stroke if the
condition were not there to simulate the address
position, direction of play and swing for such a
     stroke.
To illustrate, let’s go through a few scenarios.
In these scenarios, the following assumptions are

     • It is greenkeepers rubble,

He opted to take a penalty drop

did not agree with my ruling and
his Rules guru informed him he
was entitled to a free drop.
The next incident was at RBCC
where a golfer also hit his ball
dead against a tree, also with
no shot towards the green. He
claimed his ball was lying on a
mole run and he was standing on
a mole run and requested a free

incident but the same ruling was
made and the player also said he
was entitled to a free drop.
       Could you please help with
     this rule, especially because the
golfer had no swing and if he
did get a free drop, he improved
his lie and that is not fair as he
is not only playing against his

Keeping up with
     the Joneses...
During May, I was fortunate to be invited to the Canon S.A . Open Disabled
Championship held at the beautiful Magalies Park Estate. The players teed off in
pouring rain with the temperature at 3 degrees !

Not a single moan or groan. “ I am pleased to be well enough to play this
wonderful game” was the general comment from these fantastic golfers and
the scoring was unreal with medal rounds in the 70s. The Overall winner was
Mike Browne from England followed closely by a number of local golfers and it
was great to see the commaraderie which was very evident among this group
     of happy golfers.

The World of Golf is the perfect venue for the golf beginner and I believe it’s
the first stepping stone in increasing the much needed club membership. I
understand The World of Golf, followed by Play More Golf. Members have over
8 000 members who have joined clubs around the Country.

It’s good to see SA’s Big 3 - Louis, Charl and Branden are doing well in the US
and Europe and hopefully we might have a winner at the US Open? On the local
scene its good to see the tour making use of the Royal Swazi Sun golf course for
a number of events. Always a favourite venue among the local pros.

It’s very cold in Joburg and I’m looking forward to 5 days at Zimbali on the balmy
North Coast of KZN. Don’t Forget we are off to Selborne in July – No Jerseys
     needed - hopefully.

     See you on the tee.

Flawless Harding pulls off Swazi triumph
Justin Harding carded a bogey- clearly out there. I’m a naturally
free nine-under-par 63 on Saturday aggressive player as everyone
to pull off his sixth Sunshine Tour knows. Keeping bogeys off the card
