A Warm Welcome to the Newest Member of the Board Cindy Harper I am happy to help serve on the Kahana Falls Board of Directors. My background includes experience in forensic accounting, retirement services and most recently managing the reconstruction repairs to our condominium. My husband and I have been owners at Kahana Falls since the mid 1990s and love the property. I am now residing in the Fort Worth area of Texas and we love to travel. We have 2 sons, 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. I have a Bachelor’ s Degree with a Major in Accounting and a Minor in Business Management. I also received a Master’s Degree with a Major in Marketing. I have spent over 40 years in various environments including manufacturing, retirement services and Project Management. As the Project Manager for our condominium repairs I worked with our construction team as well as all the residents to make the process as seamless as possible. The project came in under budget and lasted longer than the proposed timeline mainly due to working through the 2020 Covid pandemic. Scam Alert As owners at Kahana Falls, you probably have received phone calls or emails from people posing as agents from RCI, Interval, or timeshare resale companies. I get these calls weekly, and sometimes daily. Recently, I received a call from a very nice gentleman who said he was with RCI and that, as members, we receive “extra vacation getaways”. He explained that if we were not going to use them, we could allow RCI to sell them on our behalf to conference organizers and we could make $1,600 per week. I had no idea that this was even a possibility, and at $1,600 he had my attention. He said all we had to do was activate the extra vacation getaways first, and then deposit them into their inventory for resale. They were $399 per week to purchase and we had six weeks available, so we could make a guaranteed $9,600 with just an initial investment of $2,394. He was very congenial, understanding, and seemed like just a downright nice guy. He wasn’t. This scam, and others like them, have been going on for many years. Just like the callers saying your social security number has been suspended or the IRS is coming after you, these callers are just fishing for personal information, credit card numbers and people that believe their lies. I consider myself to be an intelligent person who doesn’t fall for things like this. I am constantly telling my elderly parents to not believe everything they hear and stop clicking on links in emails (they never listen). But I honestly was completely taken in by the caller who said he was with RCI. I believed him. Luckily, I told him I would need to talk to the husband first, to which he eagerly provided a call back number. It was only when I was telling my husband about the phone call and was listening to the words coming out of my mouth, that I realized I had almost been hoodwinked. A quick Google Search for “RCI extra vacation getaway scams” confirmed my suspicions. The moral of the story is to be wary of any company asking for money upfront. If you receive calls like these, many states have government agencies they can be reported to. If you feel you have been the victim of a phishing scam, you can file a report with Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov. Please know that Kahana Falls and Trading Places International rarely, if ever, contact owners on the phone and only do so if they are responding to an inquiry. If you have questions, please call owner services for assistance. Terri Guest Secretary, IOA and AOAO Boards
