Rev. Father Demetrios Gardikes My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Christ is Risen! By the time you receive this letter, we will be getting close to celebrating the Feast of all Feasts, Pascha! Usually with Ohio weather, the seasons change during our approach to Pascha. The barren chill of Winter gives way to warmth, renewed life, and the beauty of Spring. Easter too marks a personal, internal change brought about by fasting, deep reflection and prayer. Our efforts are rewarded by the beauty and renewal of our souls. During Lent, we are encouraged to offer ourselves in fasting and prayer which strengthens our faith and relationship with God. Fasting has many benefits. For instance, fasting increases our awareness and watchfulness of our inner being. The walls of blindness within our hearts are removed and by God’s Grace, the passions are tempered and even conquered. Therefore, fasting aids in our purification, allowing the Holy Spirit to enter our hearts. God sees the effort of fasting done in love and blesses the obedience, in other parts of our life, inwardly and outwardly. When we pray for a loved one or a situation in need of God’s mercy, we can pray and offer the gift of fasting. Our offering may become a sweet-smelling fragrance and invoke God’s Grace. Our Lord offers examples in the scriptures when prayer along with fasting benefits those we have in mind. When a man brought his son to the disciples, they could not heal the boy. They asked Jesus why they could not heal him, and Jesus said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29). Fasting has been around for a long time. As it says in the Psalms, “But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart.” (Psalm 25:13). Intercessory prayer along with fasting has great power towards ‘for whom’ it is offered and for the building up, of the good of the community. Together, as community, we draw close to celebrating the Lord’s Resurrection. St. Peter says in his first epistle, we are living stones, being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, when we offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. It is never too late to begin your fast to the Lord. Your fast blesses and the blessing of the Holy Spirit is distributed according to God’s Will. As in the change of seasons, there is a time when fasting reaches its culmination. In St. Mark’s Gospel chapter 2, “18 The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” While our Lord Jesus Christ was with the disciples they did not fast. However, after the days of Pentecost, the disciples remember the words of the Lord to fast once again. On Pascha night, the church is darkened, and everyone is invited to come receive Christ’s light that illumines His Church. The bridegroom is once again with His bride, the Church. The time of fasting ends with the church singing, “Christ has Risen.” Death is destroyed by His death and grants Eternal Life. It is in the risen Lord that God blesses His creation with new life. The time of fasting turns into feasting because Christ is Risen! “Christ is Risen!,” so let us feast because we can live with Him eternally now! A blessed Pascha! With Love in Christ, Fr Demetrios Gardikes Proistamenos and Cathedral Dean 4
President’s Corner—Harry Ruska We Miss You! Ironically, I wrote of this last June (Q3, 2021 Charioteer) in the hopes that we had seen the last of the Delta variant only to find out that COVID 19 reared its ugly self again in the Fall of 2021 as the Omicron variant. Despite this challenge we continued to make the best of the situation by encouraging engagement between the members of our community. One of the unfortunate outcomes of the last two years is that we have relied more on less personal interaction between each of us using live streaming options for our liturgy. While many of us have been conditioned to utilize this method in our professional lives I implore you to reconsider this approach. Recently, Steve and Eve Tibbs, from the Archdiocese Center for Family Care, presented a very inspirational message on this topic worth passing along in this forum. So many times, we consider our “church” as a collection of things – a beautiful building filled with icons, chandeliers, altar, pews, etc. However, many of our forefathers have emphasized that our church is really something more… The Church is not a physical place, but rather the assembly of those who are being gathered by the Holy Spirit in a particular place. Consider also Matthew 18:20 “Where two or three are gathered in my Name, there I am among them.” In fact, the definition of Ekklesia is: “is not a house made of stones and earth… IT is the holy assembly of those who in righteousness.” - Hippolytus, 215 AD The point being made is that our church is not a church without you, participating, in person. By being personally engaged we are less likely to be distracted and lose out on experiencing God’s presence as manifested by the wonderful sounds of our clergy, choir and psalti, the smell of incense and flowers and the full and unobstructed view of the visual reminders of our faith. Moreover, it gives us something that can never be accomplished through streaming services… the opportunity to interact in person with those we love and share a common faith. Thank you to those that have participated in-person during this difficult time. For those that have not, we want to welcome you once again because we have missed you. It is worth repeating because the message is meaningful: We are a congregation, not an audience. Re-engage in the life of the parish in a way that suits you and allows you to grow in your faith. Simply said… we would not be a church without you. Harry Ruska Parish Council President 5

Stewardship Thank you to the hundreds of stewards, contributors and donors who continue supporting the ministries of the Cathedral. Over the past decade, we have been blessed with increasing financial stewardship that is being put to work in central Ohio and beyond as we answer our Lord’s command to care for the least among us. And the current year is off to a great start. In this issue of The Charioteer, you’ll find a list stewards and contributors in appreciation of – and recognition for – their love and support. We recognize that pledges and contributions are made year-round, so please keep in mind that these lists are current as of Feb. 28, 2022. If you don’t see your name and believe it should be listed, please contact Phil in the Cathedral office. If you haven’t completed a pledge for 2022, Phil can help you with that too. You also visit https://annunciationcolumbus.com to complete a 2022 stewardship pledge card. As a reminder, a member in good standing is either baptized or Chrismated into the Orthodox faith, is at least 18 years of age, current in their stewardship pledge and cooperates in every way toward the welfare and well-being of the parish. A steward is someone who contributes to cathedral’s sacred mission to be an effective witness and example of the Orthodox Christian faith and offers a commitment of financial support for the life of the parish expressed through the prayerful completion of a pledge card – which must be renewed annually. A contributor is someone with an established pattern of financial support of the life of the parish without a stated commitment (pledge card); contributors are accounted for in the financial health of the parish. Sunday Church School St. Theophan, the recluse, once said, "of all works, the education of children is the most holy." We, as a church family are called to help build up the Church, the Body of Christ by nurturing every Christian, Helen Rankin, Superintendent especially our children. We are given the mission of cultivating a life of personal communion with the Holy Trinity. We are to provide opportunities for each Orthodox Christian to bear joyful witness to God’s loving and redeeming work in our sometimes-unsettling world. What does that look like? For me, it means that through learning, I grow in loving and living our Orthodox Christian faith. Our lives in Christ are deepened by religious education. From praying, reading scriptures at home, to attending book studies, Bible studies and church school for our children, we grow in Christ. We also demonstrate to our families that making choices to grow in our faith and in relationship with the Holy Trinity is all we need to empower us to live our lives in this time. Nothing is more crucial today than learning to express our love and faith for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His Holy Church. In our childhood years, most of us were urged to do well in school and work hard so that we would be successful in our lives. If we were especially blessed, we were encouraged to attend Liturgy, pray, and read the Holy Scriptures because we should seek first the kingdom of God and His Righteousness. Join us in that search. Let’s remember that teaching our children about Christ is one of the holiest works we can do. Help us by bringing your children to liturgy and church school. Attention Seniors: We will celebrate our seniors on Sunday, May 8th. Please submit photos and a short biography to be published in the Charioteer by email to: secre- tary@greekcathedral.com and copy Fr. Demetri at papademetri@gmail.com by Monday, April 18, 2022. Please include parent’s names, college major, achievements, and future plans. Watch the Sunday Bulletin for upcoming news on Vacation Bible School! 10
Greek Language School ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ Greek Language School Nadia Yokarini-Kotsonis – Academic Principal Koullis Peratopoulos - Administrative Principal When February came around our students were looking forward to spending time in the kitchen with Mrs. Fouras. Each year our students have a chance to ‘get their hands dirty’ by preparing food of Greek origin with the help of our Heritage teacher. This year was no different. Our students prepared tyropites, dolmades, and taramosalata. We hope that some of the treats made it home for parents to enjoy as well. Our students are currently preparing for the March 25th, Greek Independence Day celebration, and with Easter coming up they will be helping in making the palm crosses for Palm Sunday. Our school year will come to an end on May 21 st. 11
Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society Come Join Us- Before we begin our Philoptochos meetings, we begin with a prayer that thanks the Lord for the abundant blessings, for the countless generations of Philoptochos sisters that have faithfully fulfilled the mission entrusted to us. We ask for wisdom, and the ability to minister to those in need. Our Philoptochos has sought to provide for those in need. Our special needs fund has helped parishioners in need. We have continued our work with Star House, Choices and provided hunger relief to those in the reservation by our support of YOCAMA. We have Philoptochos sisters that are cooking meals for Choices, Saint Gregory Nyssa and helping with the lunch program along with assisting with providing meals for temporary shelters during COVID. Our hearts and service to Saint Mary’s school has been a passion project for our chapter. We have knitted hats and scarves, purchased science equipment, and hosted the middle school for lunch and a church tour. One of the children, while in line expressed her thanks- because her mom didn’t have to pay for lunch that day and that was a blessing to her. When one of our Philoptochos sisters shared this story to me I was struck silent. A young person should not be worried about how their parent is going to afford a lunch. We have to do more. I am certain we will expand this ministry to include tutoring and more opportunities to be supportive. Our Philoptochos sisters continue to visit and encourage new moms, caregivers and shut ins. The card ministry has been a joyful component of this mission. This is where we shine- loving, supporting and inspiring one another. We had the pleasure of Jim Kaniaris sharing his artwork with us at our last meeting. It was a blessing to witness how Jim serves the Lord using the gift of painting with colors and prayer. Many of our Philoptochos sisters attended the Man of God presentation with our church family. We were so blessed by the fellowship and the shared experience of cultivating a relationship with Saint Nectarios. Our hope is that in the next week, you will hear of an in-person event where we can join one another in person and fellowship. What a blessing it will be to see smiles on faces. In the next month you will also hear of a mission trip opportunity. Come join us. Join us by becoming a member. The dues help us support our local, metropolis and national ministries. Celebrating God’s Creation The Foundation Corner “DISCUSSING YOUR ESTATE WITH FAMILY” Approaching your family with your end of life plans can be difficult. Although no one likes to think of these times, it is best to prepare your loved ones in order to ensure a smooth transition for your family. WHO? Consider approaching only those included in your estate. Depending on family dynamics, you may feel it is helpful to speak to everyone all at once or to each child or heir individually. WHAT? You may not feel comfortable divulging the exact amount of assets included in your estate. Do not feel you must disclose everything, but be aware of key items, such as: real estate, both in and out of the state or country; the family business; etc. It is also important to tell your children and heirs who your lawyer, financial advisor, banker, and other advisors are, as well as where to find your important financial information and documents. WHEN? Set aside time when nothing else is happening and no large events are coming up, like a major surgery, family holiday, or international trip. By selecting a separate time to discuss the matter, your family won’t feel rushed or emotional. Also, look for natural opportunities to touch base. Having a friend or family member who is dealing with an estate can help to open the door to this discussion. FINALLY, keep in mind that making your estate plans known can sometimes be helpful, but in the end, what you choose to disclose is purely a matter of personal choice. 13
Annunciation Cathedral Choir The Choir Loft, Our Upper-Room: By Valerie Baker, Mary Ann Harachis & Bill Holden With the choir returning to the Loft beginning on the Sunday of Orthodoxy, the 13 th of March, Valerie Baker, anticipation grows amongst our members, and it’s upon their behalf, Valerie, Mary Ann, and I, Director have written an article for this issue of the Charioteer, as an expression of the joy filling our hearts. Therefore, appropriately, this article begins with the reflections of our faithful director Valerie Baker, who has written: As our Choir prepares to return to our Cathedral Loft, we will never forget this pandemic, and its painful trials that have occurred over the last two years. Our faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, have seen us through. Even those who have fallen asleep during this time were part of His mighty plan. May their memories be eternal! I believe only by God’s grace, we are here today. May our Lord of the Powers always have mercy on us! It is by saying this, I am reminded of the compelling words of a sermon I heard years ago, “Do you think you reached this point on your own?” We know the answer, and may we never forget it! As Christians, we read His Word, processing, understanding and learning to have faith and love for Him, with all our heart, our soul, our strength, and our mind. We know He has a plan, if only we follow His Commandments, and His Guiding Light. We are in so many ways, like His Disciples at the Last Supper, the future is unknown, yet, we follow His Word, never doubting His great love. What a leap of faith Christ’s Disciples took that day, and in the days to come! Their anguish and pain was unbearable as they watched our Lord suffer and die on the Cross, only to witness His Glorious Resurrection three days later as He promised! Throughout the course of our lives, may we ALWAYS trust our Lord even when all hope is gone; having faith in Him that can move mountains. This second part is from Mary Ann: Great Lent is very special to all Orthodox Christians as is the Sunday of Orthodoxy, the first Sunday of Lent. This year it falls on Sunday, March 13th. To our choir members, however, this particular Sunday has an extra special meaning. We will be returning to our choir loft to sing God’s praises once again. Because of COVID, the last time we participated in the Divine Liturgy in our Cathedral was two years ago on Sunday, March 8 th, 2020, also the Sunday of Orthodoxy that year. The following week, everything was shut down because of the COVID restrictions. Thankfully, we are all in a much better place now. We are so looking forward to singing together once again, and we thank God for this wonderful gift of returning to our sacred loft, which is where we belong. This final part are my personal reflections that came on a certain night: On Wednesday evening, the 16th of February, when the Choir rehearsed in the Loft, we had gathered that evening to make-up for a cancelled Saturday rehearsal, due to the severe winter storm earlier in the month. It was from the loft on that evening when something very special occurred. In our large Cathedral, the space of our loft seemed intimate, like a single room. Even before rehearsal began, everyone who came, entered reverently, very little was spoken, there even seemed to be a sacred silence surrounding us. When we began to sing with the first Amen, by the time we reached the Trisagion our hearts seemed to tremble, as our voices echoed from the Dome, reaching back to our ears, because in the moment, the singing of the Angels had blended with our own voices, and then I thought of Christ with His disciples in the Upper-Room, when in their final moments together, after receiving the first Eucharist, they sang hymns before departing for the garden, where our Lord’s Passion began. And here we will soon be, in our own Upper-Room. It will now be upon our return to the Loft, that we shall gather in our Upper-Room, and each Sunday Morning, every choir member may reflect upon the steps of the disciples, as they ascended the stairs to the sacred room to be with Christ, our blessed Lord and Savior. 14
CHANTING WITH OUR CATHEDRAL CHOIR— SURPRISING SIDE-BENEFITS Last century, as newcomers to Columbus in 1965, Maro, that is my wife, and I joined the choir. It was in the old homey church. After we returned in 1987 from Singapore, where I worked for the United Nations for 10 years and 2 in Malaysia, the choir director was Dr. George Saribalas, and it was now in the gorgeous glamorous Cathedral. We met two couples in the old church with whom we developed a lifelong friendship relationship that is worth mentioning. One was Air Force Captain in charge of ROTC at Wesleyan University in Delaware Stelios Voyiatzakis and his wife Barbara. The other was chemical engineer Nikos Apostolakis and his wife Irini. All 3 couples had 3 children: two of us had 2 boys and a girl; Voyiatzakis 2 girls and a boy. Those of you who read Greek Ethos, other than I, you followed for 15 years humorous definitions of Anglicized Greek words by Nikos Apostolakis [photo] on the Greek Word Power page. Nikos was working for Dupont in Circleville, at that time. He was part of the research team that developed the plastic shield of the Lunar Module Eagle from which Neil Armstrong stepped on the Moon on 20 July 1969. In 1966, a daughter was born to us, and she was baptized by the Apostolakis. They had access to the park of Dupont company in Circleville. With our Greek parea of several families, we began to roast a whole lamb at the Dupont Park on Easter Sundays and have the children run around and play soccer. This went on until we left for Singapore in 1975, by which time parks were developed in Upper Arlington and the parea had their Easter celebrations there, but as they prospered and built new homes with sufficient land, they now have the lamb roasted at their new homes, and host the parea. Nikos moved to Dupont headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, so we visited them, toured the beautiful gardens of DuPont, traveled together to Crete, attended the wedding of their anesthesiologist son John to anesthesiologist Dorothea Markakis, the daughter of the famous Cleveland doctor M Markakis. Stelios Voyiatzakis moved to the Pentagon, became a Colonel, and was serving as security commander of an airbase in the Philippines in 1975. I had flown to Singapore ahead of the family in December 1975 but arranged for Maro and our 3 pre-teen children to fly via Tokyo, where they were hosted at the homes of 2 Japanese friends before landing in Manila. Stelios brought them to the base for a few days. Maro and the children flew to Singapore and we celebrated Christmas day 1975 together at the exotic Shangri La Hotel. There were weekly cargo plane flights between the air force base in the Philippines and Singapore, so the Voyiatzakis with their 3 children would come and stay for a week in Singapore with us. When Stelios was to be sent back to the USA and was thinking of retiring and going into the priesthood, Stelios asked me if I could get a visa from the Russian Embassy to travel across Russia to visit Orthodox monasteries. It so happened that Boris Runov, one of the deputy ministers in the Soviet Union happened to pass by Singapore. Boris was the first Russian Exchange Scholar from the Soviet Union to America in 1960, and he came to Ames Iowa where I was a graduate student in irrigation engineering. The exchange program was arranged between President Eisenhauer and Khrushchev, the Christmas Dinner in Singapore with the Voyiatzakis Ukrainian leader of the Soviet Union in 1959. Boris was assigned to my office which had 3 desks. MyAmerican officemate moved out. We kept our office door open so people can peek in and see “the Russian.” Boris and I became good friends and I were the first to lecture publicly in 1973 on environmental pollution in Kiev, Ukraine, [that is how it was called then.]. Boris arranged the visa for the Voyiatzakis. Stelios with his family crossed entire Russia from Siberia to St. Petersburg. After retirement, he attended St. Vladimir theological seminary in New York and became a priest. We attended his church in Virginia. He even served in the liturgy with papaDemetri, another graduate of St Vladimir, on a Sunday in our Cathedral when the family was visiting Columbus. Jan Teeter, who grew up with Barbara Voyiatzakis, joined us for lunch at Tommy Pappas diner after the liturgy. And that is my Choir side-benefits story following the stories of our Choir director Valerie Baker and Choir member / president William Symeon Holden in the last issue of the Charioteer.
