                                          THE BIGAS LUNA TRIBUTE
Bigas Luna (1946-2013) was one of Spain’s most celebrated contemporary filmmakers
and artists. He released seventeen feature films, with considerable international success.
This retrospective includes his critically-acclaimed ‘Iberian Portraits Trilogy’: Jamón, Jamón

documentary Bigas x Bigas (2017), based on his video-diaries. The trilogy offers a complex

rural, simpler past survive alongside newly introduced European/global, capitalist values.

Festival, is a series of global homage events organised by Bigas Luna’s daughter, Betty
Bigas, who is an artist and art curator based in California, and Bigas Luna specialist

Fiery and beautiful Silvia (Pénelope Cruz) becomes pregnant to José Luis, (Jordi Mollà)
whose family owns a local factory. Silvia's earthy mother Carmen runs the town’s bordello.
José Luis’s socially ambitious mother Conchita fears her son will marry the daughter of a
prostitute and takes action. She hires sexy Raúl, (Javier Bardem) to seduce Silvia. And as it
must, everything goes wrong.
This modern classic of Spanish cinema catapulted the careers of its three stars, creating
the iconic images of Cruz taking shelter from a storm under a testicle she has ripped from
a giant billboard bull, and the rival lovers Bardem and Mollà fighting with two legs of cured
ham in an homage to Goya’s La riña.
