Here you are: the first brochure of Small size Network.

The unique circumstances of spring 2020 have activated the members, 91 in total, to undertake many initiatives: a
Survey on Covid-19 impact and protocols affecting theatre for early years, a common artistic project during the
lockdown, a public letter about the needs and rights of small children for arts, and last, but not least, this first
brochure, collecting the latest activities from 67 of our members.

From the early spring of 2020 the Small size network members around the world have been mostly restricted
to their homes, trying to find ways to keep contact with their audiences. Theatres, cultural venues, even parks
have been closed; while the societies try to work virtually, it has not been easy to reach the small children and
families with their cultural needs. The artists have been cut suddenly and almost totally from their income; in
some countries there have been some support for theatres and individual artists, but in so many countries the
artists have been suffering and the audiences, our little ones, have been denied their rights for arts, culture and
even play.

With this digital brochure for 2020 we declare: we are here, we exist and we have a great variety of proposals to
share with our young audiences.

Bravo Small size!

          Archipelago
A baby is about to be born. A boy or a girl? It is not important.

The baby grows up and is cared for by the moon, the stars and the
clouds. The baby is like a little island, surrounded by other islands and
the sea. It is part of the archipelago. On the islands, there are bridges,
mountains, birds, trees, and whales who swim in the sea.

This is a poetic story told through dance, song, movement, and imag-
          ery for Early Years.

Early Years work, seeking a direct and equal relationship between
  the baby and the adult.

The collective was created to promote theatre as a space of
aesthetic and sensitive experience, which avoids attempting to
define universal truths. Our premise has always been to offer a
scenic space in which the viewer is motivated to walk their own
path and to direct their own gaze.

  Naturalis - 4 Elements as Home -
This is a journey into life, connecting with the four elements: air, fire, earth, water.

Two actors play a game with their bodies using live music and simple language.
They tell a story inspired by nature following a continuous process of creation and
transformation, offering the child an opportunity to connect and explore with each of
  the elements.

The show has grown out of a year and half of research and development with children
in nurseries. The four elements informed the experimentation process and allowed the
company to gather suggestions and reactions from the children who played, listened
  and smelled, touched, tasted.

Naturalis, is an experiential journey of discovery, involvement and sensory activation,
  by Maria Chiara Raviola.

Nudos
Nudos (=knots) explores the relationship that bonds mothers to
babies from the very first shared “emotional knot”: the umbilical
cord. The performance explores how we learn to develop by
creating and suppressing the bonds and people that surround
us.

Each experience creates new knots around us; knots that
pressure us and condition us, and sometimes, if they break
loose, set us free. These knots are plentiful and varied. They can
be big or small, lightly bound or firmly tied. Sometimes they tie
around our throats and choke us, sometimes they tie up in our
stomachs and paralyse us, sometimes they bind us to people
and memories. www.datedanza.es

 Danzas Aladas
Flamingos, paradise birds, penguins, albatrosses, hummingbirds,
ducks, pigeons take us on their migration; flying in a flock, finding
a territory to settle down, to look for food, to attack and defend
the nest, to have a family and finally to take flight again.

The many colours, the movement qualities, the different sounds,
the feeling of freedom and the elegance of these different birds
inspired Danzas Aladas (Winged Dances), a show for children
aged 6 months to 6 years old, which premiered in 2017.

“The constant choreography of the birds led us to cross birds’
actions with live music that resonate with the emotion and
imagery of the scene, through Milonga Argentina, Spanish
Flamenco, Hip-Hop and Afro dance. At the end of the show
everybody can come onstage to play and discover”

The famous Chinese Tangram puzzle gave life to this piece of
research into constructing and deconstructing images. On

they construct it in space. Together they visit both known and
unexplored places. They meet odd characters in even odder

  ANiMA
From the aquatic to the aerial, from the inside to the outside, from the
inert to the animated… This musical and poetic show marvels at life’s
energy which passes through us and transforms us.

Two beings meet and explore vibrations of ancestral sounds and primitive
colors, which creates a soft and enveloping theatrical universe. They ask,
“what makes our humanity? What is our connection to nature?”

Through pulse, breath and movement, they evoke the state of early
childhood. They take us on a trip into the human essence, nourished by
the sounds of the world, using songs and instruments to resonate with the

       Turn off the Light
What is the dark made out of? What does it taste like? What
is inside of it? Which dark do you know best? And what about
the dark dark? Where can you find it?

Through different games and emotions, our characters Op
and Rio, seek an answer to these questions. In the process,
they discover the existence of many types of darks, and
manage to turn a scary situation into a special moment
where everything transforms! A performance for children
aged 3 to 7 years old by Aurora Candelli. Performed by Aurora
       Candelli and Julio Escamilla.

This project emerges from theatrical research with children
of between 3 and 7 and their parents, exploring themes
                                                                       www.piccionaia.it

      Fantasy Promenade Performance
I am developing a Fantasy Promenade Performance with teenagers to get them to interact
with very young children, perhaps even babies, using music and other creative exercises.

The magic happens when we get to play together. This project has received research
funding and I have started working with and training teenagers in story-building. We have
also been figuring out how to use our small town as the ‘stage’ for our production. I hope
to be developing the idea in earnest this autumn.

  Invisible Fears
We are invited to take a journey into our fears. The audience, alternating
between actor and spectator, follow a trail of exhibitions and performances
as well as playful, tactile, sound & light installations.

The Performance - in two stories.

When The Storm Comes: Everyone has their own little frights and fears:
Marie is afraid of the dark and Bigoudi is scared of the vacuum cleaner. We
follow a normal day as it moves into a stormy night, the thunder rumbles and
everyone fears that it will spread far and envelop the city.

Strange Friends: ln the forest there is a castle, and in this castle, there are
corridors and doors. Behind these doors live an old lady and her two acolytes,
in a world that oscillates between the everyday and the strange.

The Sky Above
Documentary theatre performance takes us where few people
have set foot, where the living conditions are different from
what we are used to: the Arctic, the kingdom of the polar bear, a
landscape of sea, covered most of the year in a thick layer of ice
and snow with the aim to raise awareness about the causes and
effects of climate change; about the interconnection between
events and people’s behaviour across the world; and about the
power of the individual to change things for the better.

  The Story of the Voice
From the moment we are born and take our first breath,
we use our voice. Even without using words, our voice can
communicate our emotions, wishes and needs. Our voice can
help us to be understood and connect with our surroundings.
From crying and laughter all to talking and song, we use our
voice to express what it means to be human. The question is,
how aware are we of this instrument that is a part of us and

        Bends and Flows
Bends and Flows is a play about transformation. With 30kg
of black gram seeds, a stone grinder and two straw sieves
onstage, we follow two friends on a journey that transforms
from a road, to rain, to river. Was the story already set in the
grains or do the grains transform the story from moment to
moment, eventually getting ground into powder?

Telling this story through these limited materials and colours
gives us the opportunity to explore transformation. The
sensory qualities of the materials are very exciting for the
        toddlers.

Swedish, the short word “bo” has various meanings:
“a nest” or “to live in a home”. We play with the
objects, sounds and feelings that surround us in our

a gentle greeting to all those who are new in their

  The Smallest Story
  in the World
The Smallest Story in the World is written in a book so
tiny that only the smallest people can understand it.

The performance is a harmonious meeting between an
ordinary girl and a strange penguin who can whistle
upside down. The Penguin eats five fish for breakfast
  and speaks Penguish fluently!

On the stage there is a harmonica, a trumpet, all sorts
of string instruments, two actor musicians and the
teeny-weenie-littlest book which the smaller members
of the audience can take home after the show. A piece
  for 1.5 - 4 year olds.

  Reflections 2020
In this time we reflect on our relationship with audiences, our colleagues and
the importance of meeting and sharing experiences.

Since last year we have collaborated with different creators. We released
Are You There? with Myrto Dimitriadou (Austria), we created Brief Scores for
Many Roads with Uxa Xavier and Lagartixa na Janela (Brazil) which was an
intervention in public space. In Italy, in collaboration with Bruno Cappagli from
the Teatro La Baracca - Testoni Ragazzi we premiered Yo Soy and together
with Teatro Prova we created and directed ELLE, which will premiere soon.

The playful spirit of children and their capacity for contemplation inspire us
to cope through these times of change. We play to find poetic possibilities in
space with everyday objects. We are developing Wandering Action / Rooftop
Museum, a project that, through social networks, has allowed us to be close
to our audience and colleagues to be open to what is to come.

CHILDREN AND FAMILIES.

 Reflections from Chile
We are sharing this global reality, and we feel that brings us
closer together and shows us, once again, how much we need
 each other.

UNICEF and FAMFEST (a performing arts festival for children)
have asked us to perform / narrate / interpret a story by a
Chilean publisher. To do this, we have been exploring new
possibilities through a camera, objects of home and our son’s
toys. It has been very inspiring, motivating and energetically
vital to feel ourselves discovering and playing on this new
 turf. www.teatrodeocasion.cl
We have also been actively participating in activities to
make our sector visible and develop public policy. We have
                                                                                www.festivaldeocasion.cl
also been attending international events to share how the
moment is being lived, recently taking part in the IPAY Global

Piccoli universi sentimentali
“What’s up there?”

Children draw birds that look like fish and fish that look like birds.

Like these drawings, we create an upside-down world, where the stars dwell under the ground
and peppers, onions and autumn leaves lie above.

What is above will stand below and what is below will stand above. And we act in the middle world
between heaven and earth, building small, sentimental universes.

The character in the story finds himself in a dream world where he is filled with amazement and
curiosity. He is in a place where time stands still.

This is a show formed from the silences and tender smiles of an explorer of the soul.

Chocolate
In a clean, spotless place, a special product is being made: the
chocolate bar. A woman who adores routine and tidiness lives
here, but an extroverted, fun and impulsive character arrives and
transforms her sterile world.

The characters start to play: trying, tasting and enjoying chocolate!
As the stuff sinks into their mouths, pleasure is reflected in their eyes
and splattered across their dresses.

They soar together with chocolate on their hands and the flavours
explode, making time stand still as they taste, relish, explore and play.

A dream comes true for the whole family for the whole family, directed
by Ramón Molins.

The Little Bag with Two Coins
The Little Bag with Two Coins is inspired by a traditional Romanian short story,
brimming with valuable life lessons. Dynamically staged, the show portrays
colourful, musical characters, whose actions revolve around concepts such as
greed and generosity, allowing children to understand how people react to these
values. A happy ending brings the triumph of good over evil, and of course,
        generosity over greed.

In our rehearsal room, can you see the creator of our future show?

She is watching her actors working, trying, improvising, interacting joyfully, ideas
constantly arising. They see the scenes she has written. Inspired, the energy of
creation floods into them. The show begins to emerge.

Finally, there is an audience watching them, reacting to their discoveries. A smile, a
tear, a laugh, a twitch; eyes lighting up, bodies full of emotion.

An engaging and witty performance unfolds. Connecting with the characters, the
audience takes sides, dreaming up solutions to the story’s challenges. They fall in
love with Tim, the hero. They live his adventures with him. Surrounded by his family,
friends and emotions, Tim’s story slowly builds, his future glowing in the distance.

Abole - life is just a breath
In the past in Africa, there was no school. Children had to learn the
facts of life at gatherings under the tree or around the fireplace. The
griot, a mystical character, came to the village with his instruments
