Alderman Patricia De Lille
Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town
Cape Town is a caring and inclusive city and a city of opportunity.
All these values are espoused by the Women’s Humanity Arts Festival
whose organisers believe in equality and that the world belongs to all those
who live in it.
The City of Cape Town is proud to be associated with an event which seeks
to promote inclusion and educate the public on the importance of telling the
stories of marginalised groups in South Africa.
We are indeed proud that Cape Town’s hub of arts and culture, the Artscape will again host the Women’s
Humanity Arts Festival where audiences will not only be entertained with the fine arts, but also engage in
thought-provoking commentary on human rights issues.
Touching on issues affecting women, persons with disabilities and marginalised groups, such as LGBTI
persons, the festival is truly a remarkable platform which brings together people from different backgrounds.
The City is honoured to support efforts such as these which bring together many diverse and unique talents to
tell the stories that need to be told. This goes together with our own efforts of building an inclusive city where
we celebrate our talents and what makes us unique and come together, so that everyone feels a sense of
belonging in the Mother City.
It is through partnerships such as these and a whole of society approach that we can make a greater impact in
addressing social issues by taking hands and working together.
It is up to all of us to tackle these challenges, especially issues affecting the most vulnerable in society, and to
empower our grandmothers, mothers, sisters as well daughters to be able to take care of themselves and
claim their rights.
I’m also touched that this Women’s Month in August, the festival will celebrate and honour great women who
have made a contribution in various facets of society.
I would like to commend the organisers for continuing to host the event at such a crucial time in the world,
when we need more people to raise awareness and support for marginalised groups within our communities.
May the growth this festival has shown over the last 11 years shine throughout the month of August for the all
the artists, audiences and organisers. Have a wonderful time in this great city.

HRH Princess Celenhle Dlamini
Chairperson: Artscape Council
On behalf of our esteemed Artscape Council Members, Management and
Staff, I would like to welcome and thank you for being a part of our 12th
edition, Women’s Humanity Arts Festival.
This year is a special one for us as South Africa marks the centenary
celebrations for our struggle activist Mama Nontsikelelo, Albertina Sisulu.
Ma Sisulu, as she was affectionally known, displayed great courage and is
hailed for being a unifying leader during the Apartheid era. In 1956, she was
instrumental in leading more than 20 000 women from across South Africa to march to the Union Buildings in
Pretoria against the carrying of passes by women.
Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts Festival this August is calling on all women from different walks of life to
celebrate their relentless work and sacrifices made to build the democratic society we relish today. We will
also be honoring Ruth First, anti-apartheid activist, scholar and journalist who was assassinated using a parcel
bomb on the 17th August 1982.
Our festival theme, “A Spotlight on Cultural Diversity: Transformation & Healing Through the Arts”, will be
dedicated to celebrating both iconic women who led the Struggle as well as modern day “She-roes”? who
continue to draw attention to significant challenges South African women still face today, such as gender
based domestic violence, discrimination in the workplace, disability, homophobia and empowering the girl
child.
We look forward to you joining us for the various peer-to-peer, inter-generational and inter-faith workshops we
will be hosting, as well as the world-class productions that will be staged at Artscape throughout the month.
These events will lead up to our Annual Humanity walk that will see hundreds of responsible citizens coming
together to celebrate the strides and advocating for improved human and economic rights for women.
For the past 11 years, Artscape has developed and strengthened partnerships with stakeholders and partners
who have formed an integral part of the success of the annual Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts Festival. In
combining arts-centred stage productions with theme specific information, discussion sessions, workshops
and health screenings, the annual festival will continue to entrench the principle of restoring dignity and social
cohesion in and through the arts. This year will be the 12th edition of the Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts
Festival with Humanity as the central theme running from 20 July - 18 August at the Artscape Theatre in Cape
Town.
In 2017 the festival attracted 2000+ members of the general public, which we believe is testimony that we are
living up to our objective i.e. making the theatre accessible to the general public.
We are honoured to have you be part of this event and wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all involved who
work tirelessly towards ensuring the success of our annual Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts Festival. Please
join us on 9 August 2018 as we celebrate Women’s Day at the Artscape Theatre Centre.

Marlene le Roux
Chief Executive Officer
Artscape Theatre Centre
It is with pride and heartfelt thanks to women from all walks of life – and over
a great many years – that Artscape hosts yet another Artscape Women’s
Humanity Arts Festival this August to celebrate them and their relentless
work encapsulated in the theme “A Spotlight on Cultural Diversity:
Transformation & Healing Through the Arts.”
Over 60 years ago, more than 20 000 women marched to the Union
Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the pass laws and inhumane
Apartheid legislation. Discriminated against, based on the colour of their
skin, the pass laws directly affected their personal lives as well as their economic emancipation. Then
Democracy dawned, and we identified iconic events that led to our emancipation from the shackles of
Apartheid. August 9, the historic day those women marched, was earmarked and declared a public holiday to
be henceforth commemorated in honour of women’s struggles towards freedom. The day was to be known as
National Women’s Day.
Thus, as part of Artscape Theatre Centre’s commemoration of this struggle and in celebration of the strides we
have made as a democratic society, the Artscape Women and Arts Humanity Festival will be dedicated to both
iconic women who led the Struggle as well as modern day “she-roes.” Those included celebrating the
centenary of Albertina Sisulu and the dynamic Ruth First as well as modern day activists through the arts, Lee-
Ann van Rooi, Siphokazi Jonas and the late disabled activist, Patience Lunika, who, just last year, had her first
fashion show at this very Festival at Artscape and whose contributions to women’s challenges we want to
remember.
More than 24 years into our democracy, as South Africans, we presumed that, given our civil liberties and Bill of
Rights, we would be completely and entirely free to live our lives guided by our founding document, the
Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. But we must stay abreast of the new set of challenges we, as the
citizens of this fledgling Democracy, face. Sexism remains rife. Women are judged on what they wear;
lambasted for defying traditional roles – both “African” and “Western”; vilified for entrenching their guaranteed
rights, while many are subjected to violence, partner abuse, sexual attacks, rapes and femicide – vile deeds
encouraged by patriarchal, misogynist norms that remain deeply entrenched within the male psyche.
Unfortunately, many women uphold the aforementioned norms too – something we also hope to highlight
during this important Festival.
A glance at the enclosed Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts Festival programme (with its stage productions,
film, poetry, exhibitions, discussions and workshops) testifies that our theme of shining a “Spotlight on
Cultural Diversity: Transformation & Healing Through the Arts” will go a long way to address and ask those
pertinent questions like: Where is the struggle for women’s liberation at, at present? In which ways have
women’s challenges of modern-day changed? Are our modern-day women empowered and do they honour
themselves enough to take up those challenges? Are we steadily working towards the equality that stalwarts
like Mama Sisulu, Dora Tamana and of course Tata Madiba so impeccably led?
Thank you and enjoy!

Advisor to the CEO: Transformational Projects
Artscape Theatre Centre
It’s that time of the year again and we pride ourselves with achievements
from women all over.
The slogan ‘Wathint’abafazi wathint’imbokodo’ is fast losing its meaning as
so many women are abused and killed. As women, we keep on looking for
answers as well as comfort each other till such time that all this cruelty
stops.
Again, on the 9th, women will march on the streets of Cape Town towards
the Artscape Theatre Centre where they will share their stories and advise
each other not only on the law, the constitution and matters of the heart, but also a way forward with our
children.
The foyers are currently a construction site as the centre is upgrading to accommodate all patrons, especially
those living with disabilities. Come end of the year and we will be a new centre.
The festival continues to balance the playing fields to achieve equality for all. We continuously aim to highlight
the many women who tirelessly and bravely work towards achieving socio-economic and gender equality.
Come join us in celebrating our rich diversity and join us as we embrace the spirit of Humanity on 9 August!

In this unique fusion of theatre, poetry and

Angel find themselves sharing a makeshift
fire on a rainy Cape Town evening. Brought
together by unexpected circumstances, they form a bond as fierce and temporary as the fire. Mbali, the
homeless guardian of the fire, and Eastern Cape ‘refugee’, unravels the stories that brought them there while

select few who knows where to find them. The
Absolutely Fabulous Drag Show endeavours to
put the crème de la crème on centre stage at the
Artscape Theatre Centre. With fine feathers
preened, false eyelashes fluttering and sequins
glittering, the fiercely feminine/masculine are
gathering to celebrate the world of ‘lip sync’,
ambiguous seduction and gender identification.
The enigmatic Odidiva Mfenyana comperes the
evening, as we also pay tribute to the late
Reverend Rowan Smith. A surprise special guest
also awaits you. Top class drag divas Vida von
Tabisher, SA’s Got Talent 2016 runner-up Manila

92018 FESTIVAL ICONS
1918 - 2011
This year not only marks the centenary
celebration of our first democratic president,
Nelson Mandela, but also that of Albertina
Sisulu. Thus within our mandate to honour,
commemorate and celebrate significant
national days through the Arts, as a cultural
institution and agency of the Department of
Arts and Culture (DAC), we are actively
participating to mark the centenary of the life
of a fearless champion of democracy and
human rights.
Born Nontsikelelo Thethiwe in the village of Camama, Eastern Cape. Albertina was given the European name
when she started at the local mission school. Sisulu eventually went on to become a nurse. She met her
husband Walter Sisulu through Evelyn Mase (Nelson Mandela’s first wife). As one of Walter and Albertina’s
first dates, he took her to the inaugural conference of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League
(formed by Walter, Nelson Mandela, and Oliver Tambo), at which Albertina was the only female delegate. (It
was only after 1943 that the ANC formally accepted women as members).
Albertina Sisulu’s political highlights included many. She was part of the 20 000-strong women who marched
on the Union Buildings, Pretoria on 9 August 1956, to protest against then South African Prime Minister JG
Strijdom’s extension to the pass laws to women. Outside they sang: "Strijdom, you have tampered with the
women, you have struck a rock." which of course went on to become the famous resistance song colloquially
known as ‘Wathint' Abafazi, Wathint' Imbokodo' - aptly encapsulating Sisulu’s resilience.
On 2 June 2011 she died at her Linden home in Johannesburg, aged 92. On
21 October this year, Albertina Sisulu would have been 100
years old. We salute a fearless Struggle Icon.

Sacred Conversation - Interventions with men who abuse
women in intimate relationships: What Guidance do we get from Holy Scriptures and Ancient Teachings?
About SAFFI
The South African Faith and Family Institute (SAFFI), established in 2008, celebrates its 10th anniversary this
year. SAFFI recognises that religion plays an integral part in the eradication of gender-based violence against
women in intimate relationships and society. Our vision is to see women, men and children live their full
potential in a society free from gender based violence where faith and justice are honoured. Our work is done
through sacred conversations, dialogues, workshops and short training courses. SAFFI’s work is steeped in
research and our aim for the ensuing decade is to develop and offer a comprehensive training as well as
intervention programme for men who abuse their intimate partners. We assist faith communities in becoming
true sanctuaries of hope and healing to individuals who are afflicted by GBV. We offer technical support to
religious leaders (who completed our training) and faith communities in developing denominational or faith
specific support services and material on prevention and intervention, which would include faith statement
development, policies and procedural guidelines for working with victims / survivors, perpetrators and
children. We advocate for respectful partnerships and collaboration between government, gender justice /
domestic violence service providers and the faith sector in the quest to cultivate Ubuntu in intimate
relationships, homes, places of worship and society.

Women Unite
21st Anniversary Award Ceremony
After having been exposed to the cultures of different bands, Thandi
Swaartbooi formed Women Unite in 1997. She felt that women were not
getting the recognition, both financially and professionally, that they
deserved. Added to this, the “nice” opportunities were always being
rewarded to men. With the changes happening in our society and all
over the world, the woman’s role has evolved tremendously and this has
been one of the things that inspired Thandi to approach a number of
talented young women looking to make a future for themselves in the
field of Arts & Culture. The eight women, making up Women Unite, are
from in and around Cape Town. Their versatility, virtuosity and infectious
rousing performances have greatly amplified the impact of African music in Cape Town and around the world.
The band features traditional African music combined with jazz and modern music. Originally the music was
very traditional using marimbas, African drums and the repertoire included songs and dance about their
heritage and in 2006 they introduced a brass section. The group of eight women have been trained in different
disciplines of music, dance and drama. Currently some members are facilitators of the Women Unite
Entertainment and Projects Academy. The project employs full-time Arts facilitators who train previously
disadvantaged youth in the different art forms and is funded by the National Arts Council.
On 9 August 2018, Women Unite will host an Awards Ceremony in the Artscape Theatre, celebrating their 21st
Anniversary.

WAND Workshop
4th Celebration & Empowerment Workshop with teenage disabled girls from
Special Schools hosted by WAND (Women’s Achievement Network for Disability)
Women’s Achievement
Network for Disability
Date: 2 August 2018
Time: 09h00 - 13h00
Venue: Opera Bar
WAND (Women’s Achievement Network for Disability) is an initiative whereby disabled women give back to
teenage girls with disabilities. The initiative started in 2014 to focus on and promote the human rights of
women and girls with disabilities.
On 2 August 2018, the WAND team will host the 4th Annual Celebration & Empowerment Workshop for 70
disabled teenage girls between the ages of 13 and 18 years from various Special Needs Schools in the Cape
Town area. We use this platform to demonstrate to disabled girls that they too can be successful and strive to
live full lives, despite experiencing double barriers of gender and disability.
The aim of the workshop is to enable the girls to celebrate self-acceptance and to unlock their voices – for them
to internalise that “as a girl with a disability, I have beauty and strength; I furthermore have the potential to
develop and become a competent and confident learner, student, entrepreneur, friend, mother and career
woman". The workshop is facilitated by two business women with
disabilities, namely Karen Smit and Dr Marlene le Roux. The girls are
given the opportunity to share their challenges, stories of hope, desires
and dreams. By doing this they feel encouraged and motivated as they
realise that celebrating themselves is the first step to a journey of
achieving greatness. In doing this, the girls discover and start using
their strengths which leads to increased confidence and motivation.
This empowerment experience encourages these young girls to create
purpose for their lives; motivating them to turn dreams into goals which
will give them hope for the future to become the best they can be.

About Schuld Inc
Schuld Inc are Divorce and Family Law attorneys with
tested strategies to create cost effective, fair and
substantive financial and parenting agreements that
supports co parenting for the benefit of the children.
Schuld Inc has in the course of 20 years of working in
the Legal Profession pinpointed 5 hotspots that can
create messy divorces and contested commercial matters if not noticed and managed.
Schuld Inc uses these 5 hotspots to create strategies to manage a matter more effectively making their models
unique and effective. Through managing the “hotspots” they managed to reduce the amount of contested
divorces to only 17% of the total cases which they handle. This means that the costs per divorce are reduced.
The adversarial and contested court process is their last resort. They make every effort to preserve
relationships rather than fuel animosity, even when they have to litigate. They know that a quick transformation
from spouses to co-parents is in the child’s best interests, as children cope better with divorce when acrimony
is kept to a minimum. Therefore, they do their utmost to reduce conflict, while ensuring that clients’ and
children’s interests are protected.
