FROM THE CEO
Dear ASO patrons,
Thank you all for being here today to celebrate and enjoy your Arkansas Symphony
Orchestra. As we enter the first full season of live orchestra concerts in two years, we
enter with a mix of joy and trepidation. We have an amazing line-up of concerts and guest
conductors this year that we want to share with you. To keep everyone safe, we ask that
you keep your mask on during the concert until we can change that policy. Thank you
for your patience as we navigate this new land.
As we look to the goals of this season, the free Celebrate Little Rock concert held
September 16 and sponsored by the Stella Boyle Smith Trust is the perfect symbol for
what we want to accomplish. When Geoff Robson and I dreamed this concert up, we
had a lot of objectives. First and foremost was something fun, inspiring, and celebratory
for our community to say thank you for your continued support while we had to perform
virtually. We wanted to use and share the gifts of the Arkansas Symphony musicians
and composer Florence Price to help our city have a moment of joy. We wanted it to be
completely accessible.
Another objective was to give the orchestra a chance to perform before the first
guest conductor. Eighteen months had passed since the full orchestra came together. We
want to sound our best for the guest conductors hearing us for the first time. Performing
in September gave us that chance. We realized we could go one step further and make
a professional recording of the Price Piano Concerto in One Movement with Karen
Walwyn and ASO. This would give the orchestra more time together AND give our
state prominence in recording our own Little Rock composer, Florence Price.
When I went to the concert, I could not have been prouder to be a part of ASO.
Geoff’s program was perfect. Each piece was its own style of joy. The orchestra sounded
so good, and our guest artists, Karen Walwyn and Genine LaTrice Perez, were committed
to the music and making sure the audience had a blast.
This concert season is designed to achieve the same goals: community building,
accessibility, artistic excellence, and most importantly, fun. I confess to a few tears of joy
on September 16. Eighteen months was a long time and I missed hearing the full brass,
winds, and percussion on stage. Nothing wrong with happy tears.
Thank you for being here. If you have any questions or would like to get more
involved in the behind-the-scenes work of the orchestra, please do not hesitate to contact
me during the year at CLittlejohn@ArkansasSymphony.org. I look forward to seeing
you this year!
Sincerely,
Christina Littlejohn, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
ARKANSAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAFROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dear Music Lover,
As we embark on the 2021-22 season, it gives me pause to reflect on the
journey, full of challenge and pain, but also learning and love, that we have all
been on for the last year and a half. It is with heartfelt gratitude and commitment
to the community that we welcome you back to the concert hall, where we will
once again experience the power of the full symphony orchestra on stage together.
This will be a season like none other. It will feel new and familiar at the
same time. We will hear great works of music by past masters and brand new
works commissioned by your ASO. We will continue our journey to bring
to light the works of composers who have been unfairly ignored through history.
And, we will show the world that great art is created and enjoyed right here
in Little Rock, Arkansas.
At its core, orchestral music is about community. Making this music is a
communal act that exists to be shared. While we have learned new ways to bring
the power of music to the people, there is no substitute for the atmosphere created
when we enjoy it together. Thank you for being a part of it, and for helping us
spread our positive impact farther and wider than ever before.
Sincerely,
Geoffrey Robson, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

GEOFFREY ROBSON, Artistic Director
Geoffrey Robson currently serves as artistic director
and associate conductor of the Arkansas Symphony
Orchestra, and music director of the Arkansas
Symphony Youth Ensembles. During his tenure in
Arkansas, he has conducted critically acclaimed and
sold-out masterworks, pops, chamber, and educational
concerts throughout the state. He also produces and
writes At the Symphony, a concert preview radio series on
KLRE Classical 90.5 in Little Rock.
Robson frequently collaborates with organizations
in the community such as Ballet Arkansas, Arkansas
Children’s Theater, Opera in the Rock, the Chamber
Music Society of Little Rock, and many local choral groups. He is currently on the
faculty of Hendrix College and since 2017, has served as artistic director of the Faulkner
Chamber Music Festival, a summer concert series and two-week intensive chamber music
camp. In 2013-2014, he served as visiting assistant professor of music at the University
of Central Arkansas, and conductor of the Conway Symphony Orchestra.
He has worked with renowned artists Midori, Rachel Barton Pine, Vadym
Kholodenko, Alexander Markov, Christiane Noll, Calvin Lee, and the Beach Boys.
He regularly brings emerging world-class talent to Little Rock to entertain audiences
and to educate and inspire young musicians.
A champion of new music, he collaborates with and explores the music of renowned
living composers. In 2016, he conducted the premiere of James Stephenson’s Concerto for
Hope with celebrated trumpeter, Ryan Anthony and the San Juan (Colorado) Symphony.
Recently, he conducted the premiere of Into the Beautiful North, by Joe Brent, performed
by the trio, 9 Horses. He has promoted works by composers with Arkansas connections
such as Jeremy Crosmer and Karen Griebling.
Robson is also an orchestral arranger and his works have been featured on the
Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s Pops Live! series concerts on numerous occasions.
Additionally, he writes string arrangements for recording artists to assist them in
achieving their musical goals in the studio.
As a violinist, he performs frequently on the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s
popular River Rhapsodies Chamber Music series, often sharing the stage with principal
members of the orchestra. Prior to his appointment in Arkansas, he served as concert-
master of the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, and assistant concertmaster
of the Waterbury Symphony. Recognized for his skill and versatility, he is increasingly
sought after as a studio musician.Robson studied orchestral conducting at the Mannes College of Music in New York
City under the tutelage of David Hayes and holds violin performance degrees from Yale
University and the Michigan State University Honors College. Primary violin teachers
include Erick Friedman, Dmitri Berlinsky, and I-fu Wang.
He studied conducting at Yale University with Lawrence Leighton Smith, Edward
Cumming, and Shinik Hahm. Other notable teachers include Leon Gregorian, John
Farrer, Neil Thomson, and Larry Rachleff.
KRIS ALLEN, Vocalist
On New Year’s Day in 2013, Kris Allen and
his then-pregnant wife Katy were in a head-on
collision that left the singer/songwriter/guitarist
with a career-threatening shattered wrist. In the two
years that followed, he underwent three surgeries,
relearned how to play guitar (despite regaining
just 30 percent movement in the damaged wrist),
recorded his third album, and toured relentlessly —
including a two month-long stint that started just
one week after his accident. The American Idol
season 8 winner ultimately retreated from the
whirlwind and immersed himself in a songwriting spell that yielded more than 70 new
tracks. Culled from the collection of songs, Allen’s fourth full-length album Letting You In
finds the Nashville-based artist delivering his most intimate and dynamic work to date.
The follow-up to 2014’s Horizons, Letting You In builds off the soulful musicality Allen
first showcased with his platinum-selling 2009 single “Live Like We’re Dying,” But with
its sophisticated songcraft and vulnerable lyrics, Letting You In reaches a new depth of
feeling that infuses each track with undeniable emotional power. “Looking back, I think
I tried to put off dealing with my feelings around the accident for as long as I could,” says
Allen. “But in the past year I’ve realized how much it all affected me, and that definitely
came out in the writing of this album.”
Allen recorded in Nashville with producers Konrad Snyder (Mat Kearney, Owl City,
Milo Greene), Ian Fitchuk ( James Bay, Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors, Griffin House),
and Grammy Award-winner Brown Bannister (Amy Grant, Kenny Rogers, Steven Curtis
Chapman) and made a point of exploring both the bright and dark elements of everyday
life. “There’s almost two different sides to the record,” Allen notes. “On one hand you’ve
got these happy love songs, because that’s life — I’m a happily married guy, everything
with my family’s really great. But internally I was going through some things and trying
to figure out my life, and the rest of the album very much came from that.”
The latter category of songs includes “My Time Will Come,” whose lyrics reflect
on Allen’s struggles with self-doubt (“Lately I’ve been making friends with the doubts in
my head/Hanging on every word that they’ve said”). But with its lilting guitar melodies
and soaring vocals, the song ultimately emerges as anthem of gritty perseverance. On “If
We Keep Doing Nothing,” Allen offers a poignant look outward. Written in the wake of
the mass shooting at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College, the song’s throwback-soul
continued next pageA RTISTS continued
arrangement of stark guitar tones and stirring organ lines provide a powerful backdrop
for a determined meditation on gun violence.
While Letting You In takes on its share of weighty maters, the album radiates a hopeful
spirit that’s got everything to do with Allen’s easy warmth and openheartedness as a
songwriter and vocalist. One of Letting You In’s most uplifting tracks, “Way Up High”,
blends cascading guitar lines, breezy melodies, and slice-of-life storytelling that came
to Allen while flying back home after spending days away from his family. “Usually when
I’m writing a song I start with the music, but with ‘Way Up High’ the lyrics all came to
me in a poem form,” he says. “I just tried to get down all these thoughts that were rolling
through my head at the time, in a very stream-of-consciousness sort of way, and it all
felt really natural.” And among the love songs that make up much of Letting You In is
“Waves,” whose gospel-inspired harmonies and spirited piano work perfectly to capture
the tenderness in Allen’s opposites-attract serenade to his wife.
Allen first picked up the guitar at age 13, after spending much of his childhood
singing in church in his hometown of Jacksonville, Arkansas. Writing his first song in
his late teens, he self-released an album at age 22 and auditioned for the eighth season
of American Idol the following year. Several months after his Idol victory Allen put out his
self-titled major label debut, with lead single “Live Like We’re Dying”, climbing to the
top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to releasing his sophomore album Thank
You Camellia in 2012, he spent the next several years sharing stages with such artists
as Maroon 5 and Keith Urban, as well as landing Billboard, Teen Choice and People’s
Choice Awards nominations.
In the aftermath of his accident, Allen devoted himself to relearning guitar, adjusting
his technique to adapt to the lack of movement in his wrist. “At first I thought I’d never be
able to play again,” he recalls. “But once I got my cast off, I spent more time playing than
I ever had in my life. Through all that I realized that I shouldn’t take my craft for granted,
so I really focused on developing it and becoming even stronger as a guitar player than
I ever was before.”
Along with rebuilding his guitar skills, Allen revamped his approach to songwriting
and soon saw a resurgence in his creativity. “When I’ve made albums in the past, there’ve
always been other artists and songwriters that I was using as reference points,” says Allen,
who names Stevie Ray Vaughan and Stevie Wonder among his earliest inspirations.
“But this time I shut myself off from all that, and just focused on making music that was
completely true to me.”
That process proved both thrilling and daunting, but in the end instilled him with
a new sense of purpose as an artist. “When I first started making music, it was very much
coming from a place of ‘Are people going to like this?’” he recalls. “But as I was making
this album, it really became more about being genuine and writing songs that feel good.
My hope is that if those songs mean a lot to me, they’ll mean a lot to the people listening,
and that they’ll get some of that hopeful feeling too.”
Since the release of Letting You In, Allen has released an anthemic single about
the depth of love outlasting life called When All the Stars Have Died (2018). Kris will also
be heading out on a solo tour to celebrate his 10-year long career with fans all over
the United States. For more info on dates and tickets, visit krisallenofficial.com.HOLIDAY SAVINGS EVENT
