Associate Professor Christopher Walsh
Program Director – Education
Christopher’s primary concern is to enhance teacher education through applied
research and by developing frameworks for analysing and conceptualising
alternative visions of education in a time of unprecedented social and technological
change. He does this intentionally to theorise and build sustainable educational
futures that explicitly focus on improving schooling, student learning outcomes and
fostering creativity.
Christopher has worked across diverse contexts in Asia, North America, Europe,
the Middle East and Australia to provide pre- and in-service teacher education,
professional development and to theorise new ways technology can assist educators
in designing curriculum and pedagogy relevant to students’ and citizens’ lifeworlds.
Much of his academic and research leadership in developing contexts has centred
on building institutional capacity – using information and communication
technologies (ICTs) – for training and developing a high-quality teaching workforce
in countries most hampered by the lack of qualified teachers (Afghanistan,
Bangladesh and India). Within developed contexts, his work leverages the power
of technology to assist pre-service teachers and practicing educators connect their
teaching practices to students’ lifeworlds by drawing on their individual, family and
community funds of knowledge (Australia, Austria, Greece, USA and the UK).
This innovative body of work is evidenced by substantial external funding totaling
more than $22 million where he has either been a team member who co-wrote
accountable grants, the lead applicant, co-applicant or co-investigator. Christopher
also has a strong record of high quality publication outputs, including manuscripts
in highly ranked academic outlets. To date he has published 2 co-edited books, 5 co-
edited textbooks, 25 refereed journal articles, 17 book chapters, 20 research reports
and given 25 invited keynotes or presentations. He also currently edits Digital
Culture & Education (DCE), a peer-reviewed and open-access international journal.
Christopher has previously worked at The Open University UK, Deakin University and
Teachers College, Columbia University.

Research Interests
Christopher’s research interests are transdisciplinary and focused on literacy education, digital games,
eLearning, creativity, teacher professional development and HIV prevention, care and support.

Current Research Projects
Christopher is currently working on Creative Emotional Reasoning Computational Tools Fostering Co-
Creativity in Learning Processes (C2Learn) funded by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework
Program (F7P). He was the co-applicant (2012) for C2Learn (€2.4 million), an international project
with 7 consortium partners. C2Learn is designing an innovative digital gaming and social networking
environment that incorporates diverse digital tools which can foster co-creativity in learning processes
across formal and informal educational contexts. C2Learn is a timely intervention. The designed
intervention is being implemented and tested in school communities, covering the spectrum from
upper primary to university education (learner ages from 10 to 20 years), in a sample of 3 European
countries (Austria, Greece, and UK).
Christopher is also working on 2 projects funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)
in Myanmar as part of his role as Co-Director of Bridges Across Borders South East Asia Community
Legal Education Initiative (BABSEA CLE).
• The first project is entitled “Strengthening Rule of Law in Myanmar Through Clinical Legal
Education”, where BABSEA CLE and its university partners are working in collaboration to expand
and enhance the Clinical Legal Education (CLE) programs that strengthen legal education reform,
so that will have a positive impact on marginalised communities. Christopher is leading on the
monitoring and evaluation of these innovative justice education programs, which will provide a
key focus for research that can influence national reform in the justice and human rights sectors
Myanmar and across South East Asia.

• The second project is entitled “Implementing Two Rule of Law Pilot Centers in Mandalay and
Lashio, Rule of Law, Access to Justice Myanmar”. The project is working in collaboration with a
consortium of international partners including The International Development Law Organization
(IDLO) and Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF) (Lawyers Without Borders). Christopher is leading
the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) component of the project. The project aims to support
and document improvements in public legal awareness and empowerment through technical
assistance to university law departments to implement clinical legal education approaches and by
promoting roundtable discussions among local organisations and justice actors with a focus on the
rights of women, ethnic groups and other vulnerable populations.

Since 2013, Christopher has also been on a project funded by the International English Language
Testing System (IELTS) entitled “Perceptions of IELTS test users and motivations of test takers in
Bangladesh and Nepal: A comparative case study” with colleagues from Bangladesh, Nepal and
the UK. The aims of the study are twofold for Bangladesh and Nepal. First, the study aims to better
understand the perceptions of major test users such as test takers, preparation teachers, parents/
guardians of test takers, and local users of test results, eg. scholarship officers on-site and employers in
Bangladesh and Nepal. Second, it aims to understand individuals’ motivations to take the IELTS Test as
well as the resulting impact of taking part in IELTS Test preparation and examination.
