2.     THE GREETING
Minister: Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord
            Jesus Christ be with you
All         And also with you.

3. INTROIT: Turn Thy face from my sins(T. Attwood)
         Turn Thy face from my sins
         And put out all my misdeeds.
         Make me a clean heart, O God.
         And renew a right spirit within me,
         Renew, renew, renew a right spirit within me.

            Cast me not away from, away from Thy presence,
            And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me

4. GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME
Minister: Blessed be the Lord who forgives all our sins,
All Whose Mercy Endures For Ever.
Minister: The Lord be with you.
All          And also with you.
Minister: As far as the east is from the west, so far has God set our sins
             from us.
The Minister explains the meaning of Lent and invites the people
Minister: Brothers and sisters in Christ: since early days Christians
             have observed with great devotion the time of our Lord's
             passion and resurrection and prepared for this by a season of

                                       2
penitence and fasting. By carefully keeping these days,
             Christians take to heart the call to repentance and the
             assurance of forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel, and so
             grow in faith and in devotion to our Lord. I invite you,
             therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a
             holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer,
             fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on
             God's holy word.

All          Holy God,
             Holy and strong,
             Holy and immortal,
             Have mercy upon us.

Minister: Let us pray.

5. THE COLLECT

Minister: Let us pray the prayer appointed for today - Ash Wednesday:
All Almighty and everlasting God, You hate nothing that You
             have made and forgive the sins of all those who are
             penitent: create and make in us new and contrite hearts
             that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging
             our wretchedness, may receive from You, the God of all
             mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus
             Christ Your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with
             You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
             forever. Amen.

          Lord, my trust is in Thy mercy,
          All my hope in Thee I place,
          I will sing of Thy loving kindness,

10. HYMN: Lord, I would own Thy tender care
       Lord, I would own Thy tender care,
       And all Thy love to me;
       The food I eat, the clothes I wear,
       Are all bestowed by Thee.
            ’Tis Thou preservest me from death
            And dangers every hour;
            I cannot draw another breath
            Unless Thou give me power.
            Kind angels guard me every night,
            As round my bed they stay:
            Nor am I absent from Thy sight
            In darkness or by day.
            My health and friends, and parents dear,
            To me by God are given;
            I have not any blessing here
            But what is sent from Heav’n.
            Such goodness, Lord, and constant care,
            I never can repay;
            But may it be my daily prayer,
            To love Thee and obey.

12. SELF-EXAMINATION AND CONFESSION
The minister now leads a corporate examination of conscience as follows:
Minister: Let us now call to mind our sin and the infinite mercy of God.
          God the Father,
All       Have mercy on us.
Minister: God the Son,
All       Have mercy on us.
Minister: God the Holy Spirit,
All       Have mercy on us.
Minister: Trinity of love,
All       Have mercy on us.
All Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we
          confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed.
Minister: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and
          strength. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
          We have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven.
All       Lord, have mercy.
Minister: We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us.
          We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved
          your Holy Spirit.
All        Lord, have mercy.
Minister: We confess to you, Lord all our past unfaithfulness: the
          pride, hypocrisy and impatience of our lives.
All       Lord, have mercy.

                                   5
Minister: Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation
          of other people.
All       Lord, have mercy.
Minister: Our anger at our own frustration and our envy of those more
          fortunate than ourselves.
All       Lord, have mercy.
Minister: Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts and our
          dishonesty in daily life and work.
All       Lord, have mercy.
Minister: Our negligence in prayer and worship and our failure to
          commend the faith that is in us.
All       Lord, have mercy.
Minister: Accept our repentance, Lord for the wrongs we have done, for
          our blindness to human need and suffering, and our
          indifference to injustice and cruelty.
All       Accept our repentance, Lord.
Minister: For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts towards
          our neighbours and for our prejudice and contempt towards
          those who differ from us.
All       Accept our repentance, Lord.
Minister: For our waste and pollution of your creation and our lack of
          concern for those who come after us.
All       Accept our repentance, Lord.
Minister: Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us.
All Favourably hear us, for your mercy is great.
Minister: Accomplish in us the work of your salvation,

                                      6
All That we may show your glory in the world.
Minister: By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord,
All Bring us with all Your saints to the joy of his
           resurrection.
Silence is kept.
All We have not loved You with our whole heart.
           We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
           In Your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to
           amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we
           may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you,
           our God. Amen.

  Paybill 303035 for Children and Teens Centre (CTC) Project.

People remain seated during the offertory.

14. OFFERTORY HYMN: Christian, dost thou see them
        Christian, dost thou see them
        On the holy ground,
        How the troops of Midian
        Prowl and prowl around?
        Christian, up and smite them,
        Counting gain but loss;
        Smite them by the merit
        Of the holy cross.

                                     7
Christian, dost thou feel them,
             How they work within,
             Striving, tempting, luring,
             Goading into sin?
             Christian, never tremble;
             Never be down-cast;
             Smite them by the virtue
             Of the Lenten fast.
             Christian, dost thou hear them,
             How they speak thee fair?
             “Always fast and vigil?
             Always watch and prayer?”
             Christian, answer boldly,
             “While I breathe I pray:”
             Peace shall follow battle,
             Night shall end in day.
             “Well I know thy trouble,
             O my servant true;
             Thou art very weary,
             I was weary too;
             But that toil shall make thee
             Some day all mine own,
             And the end of sorrow
             Shall be near my throne."

15. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
Celebrant: The Lord be with you
All:             and also with you.
Celebrant:        Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Celebrant: It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times
                 and in all places to give You thanks and praise, holy

                                         8
Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God,
             through Jesus Christ your only Son our Lord.
             For he is Your living Word; through Him You have
             created all things from the beginning, and formed us in
             Your own image.
             Through Him You have freed us from the slavery of sin,
             giving Him to be born as man and to die upon the cross;
             You raised Him from the dead and exalted Him to Your
             right hand on high.
             Through Him You have sent upon us Your holy and life-
             giving Spirit, and made us a people for Your own
             possession.
             Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who was in every way
             tempted as we are, yet did not sin; by whose grace we are
             able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer unto
             ourselves, but unto Him who died for us and rose again.
             Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the
             company of heaven, we proclaim Your great and glorious
             name, for ever praising You and saying:
All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might.
             Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
             Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
             Hosanna in the highest.
Celebrant: Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through Your Son
             our Saviour Jesus Christ; and as we follow His example
             and obey His command, grant that by the power of Your
             Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us His
             body and blood;
             Who in the same night that He was betrayed, took

                                   9
bread and gave You thanks; He broke it and gave it to His
             disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body which is
             given for you; do this in remembrance of me.
             In the same way, after supper He took the cup and gave
             You thanks; He gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of
             you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed
             for You and for many for the forgiveness of sins, Do this
             as often as You drink it, in remembrance of me. Let us
             proclaim our faith
All: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come
             again.
Celebrant: Accept through Him, our great high priest, this our
             sacrifice of thanks and praise; and as we eat and drink
             these holy gifts in the presence of Your divine majesty,
             renew us by Your Spirit, inspire us with Your love, and
             unite us in the body of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
             Through Him, and with Him, and in Him, by the power
             of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before You in earth
             and heaven, we worship You, Father almighty, in songs
             of everlasting praise:
All: Blessing and honour and glory and power be Yours
             for ever and ever. Amen.
Celebrant: As our savior taught us so we pray
All:         Our Father in heaven....
Celebrant: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
All: Though we are many, we are one body, because we all
             share in one bread.
             Jesus, Lamb of God: have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer
             of our sins: have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the
             world: give us your peace.

                                   10
Celebrant: Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus
              Christ which He gave for you, and His blood which He shed
              for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that He died for
              you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith with
              thanksgiving.

16. THE RECEIVING OF ASHES

Worship Songs will be sung as people move to the Altar for the imposition
of Ashes and partake the Holy Communion
The Minister says:
Minister: Dear friends in Christ, I invite you to receive these ashes as
              a sign of the spirit of penitence with which we shall keep
              this season of Lent.
              God our Father, You created us from the dust of the earth:
              grant that these ashes may be for us a sign of our
              penitence and a symbol of our mortality; for it is by Your
              grace alone that we receive eternal life in Jesus Christ our
              Saviour.
All:          Amen.
Minister: Come, receive the sign of ashes.
The ashes are placed on each person’s forehead or with the words
Minister: Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.
Faithful:     Amen
After the imposition of ashes the Minister says the following prayer

Minister: The Lord enrich you with His grace, and nourish you with
              His blessing;
              The Lord defend you in trouble and keep you from all evil;
                                     11
The Lord accept your prayers, and absolve you from your
                sins and offences, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our
                Saviour.
All:            Amen.

Prayer after Communion
Silence is kept.
Celebrant: Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us
                both a sacrifice for sin and also an example of godly life:
                give us grace that we may always most thankfully receive
                these his inestimable gifts, and also daily endeavour to
                follow the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus
                Christ our Lord.
All    Amen.
17. CHOIR: The Lord bless you and keep you (John Rutter)
           The Lord bless you and keep you:
           The Lord make his face to shine upon you, to shine upon
           you and be gracious, and be gracious unto you.
           The Lord lift up the light of his countenance upon you, and
           give you peace. AMEN.
18. THE BLESSING
Celebrant: Christ give you grace to grow in holiness, to deny
               yourselves, take up your cross, and follow him;
               and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and
               the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.
All            Amen.

Minister: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
All In the name of Christ. Amen.

                                       12
19. RECESSIONAL HYMN: Forty days and forty nights
           Forty days and forty nights
           Thou wast fasting in the wild;
           Forty days and forty nights
           Tempted , and yet undefiled:
           Sunbeams scorching all the day;
           Chilly dew-drops nightly shed,
           Prowling beasts about thy way,
           Stones thy pillow, earth thy bed.
           Shall not we thy sorrows share,
           And from earthly joys abstain,
           Fasting with unceasing prayer,
           Glad with thee to suffer pain?
           And if Satan, vexing sore,
           Flesh or spirit should assail,
           Thou, his vanquisher before,
           Grant we may not faint nor fail!
           So shall we have peace divine;
           Holier gladness ours shall be,
           Round us too angels shine,
           Such as ministered to thee.
           Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear,
           Ever constant by Thy side,
           That with thee we may appear
           At the eternal Eastertide.

                                  13
