Dear guests,

Welcome to the open day at Schloss Bellevue! We are de-
lighted to have you as our guests in Schloss Bellevue and
the park today.
The Federal President's - "BÜRGERFEST" 2019 Schloss Bellevue Saturday, 31 August 2019 - Bundespräsident
We warmly invite you to get to know the official residence
of the Federal President and to meet people who are en-
gaged in various forms of voluntary work in our country.
The “Bürgerfest” honours this work and all the people who
contribute their ideas and invest their energy to promote
solidarity within our society and make it an attractive
place to live – whether in associations and church com-
munities, in the field of environmental protection or in
culture and education.

What people achieve during the countless hours of volun-
tary work they perform is what makes our country strong.
They provide practical assistance, they encourage and
inspire others. They assume responsibility. And amid the
diversity of their engagement, they are united by the desire
to shape our society – they are united by their enthusiasm
for the future!

This year’s “Bürgerfest” partner regions, Finland and
Land North Rhine-Westphalia, also fuel our enthusiasm
for the future. We would like to thank them particularly
for their contribution to this event, along with the many
other partners.

Making our voices heard, rolling up our sleeves and
always remaining open to new ideas is what we want to
convey by choosing “Embracing the future” as the motto
for this “Bürgerfest”.

Enjoy the day and allow yourselves to be inspired! After
all, the future is what we make of it, together.

CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

                                  ROLAND KAISER
Since the start of his career,
                                  German artist Roland
                                  Kaiser has won the hearts
                                  of three generations with
                                  his music and through
                                  his social activity. Life
                                  has made Roland Kaiser a
                                  prominent personality –
                                  he is frequently honoured
                                  for his social engagement,
not least with the Order of
                                  Merit of the Federal Repu-
                                  blic of Germany in 2016.
His broad repertoire reads like a journey through the his-
tory of German schlager music of the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

                     APOCALYPTICA
On 10 May 1996, the Finnish metal
                     band Apocalyptica released their debut
album “Plays Metallica By Four Cellos”,
creating their own genre and laying the
foundations for a career that has span-
ned more than 20 years. Along the way
                     they have explored several musical
styles – ranging from atmospheric interludes to rapid, batte-
ring rhythms – but their music has remained dynamic and
 melodious throughout.

 GAYLE TUFTS
For more than 25 years, Gayle Tufts has
been building a bridge between her old
and her new homelands. Her pieces
reflect her personal view of Trump’s
America and her love of Germany. As
an entertainer, singer and author, Gayle
Tufts combines dance and song, music
and words in at least two languages, ac-
companied by Marian Lux on the piano.

THE YOUNG CLASSX –
SOLO ENSEMBLE AND BEREN KADER FIDAN
The Otto Group presents its music education project
“The Young ClassX”. The solo ensemble select choir will
perform with a band at this year’s “Bürgerfest” alongside
Beren Kader Fidan. The Turkish soprano began her musical
training in 2012, driven by the desire to become an opera
performer. The musicians demonstrate how it feels to do
something you love – and to enjoy it in the process.

                    ROBIN PACKALEN
It would be no exaggeration to describe
Robin Packalen as a prodigy of Finnish
pop music. The singer and performer
                    from Turku, southern Finland, released
his celebrated debut album at the age of
                    13. Packalen, who has had a reputation
as a teenage star for many years in the
Nordic countries, now appears as a mature solo performer,
combining influences from urban pop, dance and electro
with R&B singing and an electric rock guitar.

 HORST HANSEN TRIO
With its multifaceted interpretations of modern jazz, the
Horst Hansen Trio offer their audience a varied performance
in terms of both their music and their stage outfits. Their
 music can be described as
 honest and not excessively
 intellectual. This is reflec-
 ted in groovy rhythms, wild
 time changes and energetic
 improvisation sessions.

 FEDERAL PRESIDENT FRANK-WALTER STEINMEIER
 IN CONVERSATION WITH

Space, the deep sea and the polar regions are extreme
environments hostile to human life. However, the scien-
tific insights gleaned there help us to better understand
our habitat Earth as well as changes in the climate and the
environment. The more we know about these changes,
the better we can target our efforts to counteract them
in order to ensure a viable future also for generations to
come. The Federal President will talk to two scientists who
through their research trips have gained a quite unique
perspective on our habitat Earth and who are encouraging
people to work to build a positive future.

The Federal President's - "BÜRGERFEST" 2019 Schloss Bellevue Saturday, 31 August 2019 - Bundespräsident
On the stage, Federal President
 Frank-Walter Steinmeier in conversation with:

 Prof. Dr Antje Boetius
The Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) at the
Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research and Pro-
fessor of Geomicrobiology at the Marum Research Faculty,
Universität Bremen, heads a research group on deep sea
ecology and technology at the Max Planck Institute for
Marine Microbiology. She has taken part in almost 50 expe-
ditions to all the world’s oceans and is currently preparing
for an expedition to the North Pole designed to provide
insights into the consequences of the rapid climate change
in the Arctic. In 2018, she received the German Environ-
mental Award of the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt
DBU (German Federal Foundation for the Environment)
and the Communicator Award of the Stifterverband
(Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and
Humanities in Germany) and the Deutsche Forschungs-
gemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) for her en-
gagement in communicating her research on the deep sea
and the polar regions in many ways and over many years.

 Dr Alexander Gerst
The geophysicist has already flown to the International
Space Station (ISS) twice for the European Space Agency
(ESA) and holds the European record for the most days in
orbit, 363 in total. Furthermore, in the context of his last
mission “Horizons” (2018), he was the second European
and first German commander of the ISS. Gerst conducted
numerous experiments in space, including cancer research
and experiments on artificial intelligence topics. “Only
when we understand the universe in which we live will we
be able to protect our home” is how he describes part of
the motivation behind his work. His photos from the ISS
cupola memorably revealed the vulnerability of our planet.
Gerst holds the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of
Germany, First Class, and has received many prizes for his
work as an astronaut and scientist.

“ORT DER BEGEGNUNG”
 (GARDEN STAGE)

“ORT DER BEGEGNUNG” (GARDEN STAGE) –
 EMBRACING THE FUTURE!

The future is open to all of us. We can shape it.
At the “Ort der Begegnung” you can get to know people
who are confronting the challenges of the future: issues
 concerning digital transformation, environmental protec-
tion and education. How do we want to live together, and
what conditions do we need to put in place today to make
 it possible?

INDEX MAP
One thing is sure, our future will be shaped by the radical
changes ushered in by the digital transformation. We need
knowledge and skills in order to understand and make
use of the changes that the digital transformation brings
with it. What opportunities for positively shaping our
future co-existence does digital technology open up – for
instance, with regard to civic engagement?

Other exciting initiatives such as JUUUPORT e.V.,
Klischeefrei [Cliché Free Initiative], the Finnish climate
initiative Ilmastoveivi2019 and many others will showcase
a wide range of their very different activities.

The “Ort der Begegnung” is a discussion forum. You are
warmly invited to participate: in the panel discussions on
the stage, in conversations with volunteers at the various
project stands or in talks with other “Bürgerfest” guests.
Let’s talk about our future together: with heart and reason,
with passion and an open mind for good ideas!

We would like to thank all the partners for their engage-
 ment and support.

 GEMÜSEACKERDEMIE
Ackerdemia – making an impact, acre by acre: “A generation
that knows what it eats” – that is the goal of the charitable
organisation Ackerdemia. In 2019 the organisation sent
out almost 500 kindergartens and schools into the fields
 through its educational programme GemüseAckerdemie
(Vegetable Acre-demy): The children plant up to 30 diffe-
rent types of vegetables in their own field and are thereby
able to learn where food comes from. At the stand, guests
can use all their senses to test their knowledge of vegeta-
bles and discover fascinating food facts – directly in the
 vegetable patch.

 AG EMS |
GREEN TRAVEL IN THE WADDEN SEA WORLD NATURAL
 HERITAGE SITE
The Wadden Sea, a World Natural Heritage site protected
by UNESCO, is always in flux, always new. The AG EMS is
helping to preserve this unique habitat, and presents at
the “Bürgerfest”: Green travel, a competition with photos
of people modelling typical yellow oilskins (the “Ostfriesen
nerz”), a drawing activity with an island artist and a “mud-
flat sense box”. An authentic East Frisian tea ceremony,
shrimp-picking and the singing mudflats guide – East Frisian
 culture meets Berlin!

 AKTION MENSCH e. V. |
 ENGAGEMENT FOR ACCESSIBILITY
Aktion Mensch e.V. is the largest private funding organi-
sation in the social sector in Germany. It uses the income
from its lottery to support up to 1000 social projects each
month. Its goal is to promote the natural interaction of
people with and without disabilities within society. At the
Federal President’s “Bürgerfest”, Aktion Mensch will be
working to eliminate barriers: it is responsible for organi-
sing ramps, accessible toilet facilities and sign-language
 interpreters.

 PERFORMANCE, PASSION AND FAIR PLAY:
 COMMUNICATING VALUES THROUGH SPORT –
AT THE TOP LEVEL AND ACROSS THE BOARD
Whether at top level or across the board, in clubs or social
projects: Allianz has been involved in sport for a long
time. Since the beginning of the year, it has been a natio-
nal sponsor of the German Sports Aid Foundation. A com-
mon goal is to communicate the positive values fostered
by sport to set an example particularly for children and
young people. In the context of the “Bürgerfest”, selected
German Sports Aid Foundation athletes will support the
social project Sportkinder Berlin in their goal to promote
health, education and integration among children through
 sport and exercise.

 BAYER FOUNDATIONS |
 PARTNERS OF THE PIONEERS
Pioneering spirit and dedication have been at the heart of
Bayer’s foundation work since 1897. At the Foundations’
stand, you can meet people who are trailblazing with social
innovations all over the world, for example in preventive
healthcare or with the use of technological innovations
to safeguard global food supply. Our younger guests can
give free rein to their creativity in the children’s drawing
 competition.

 BERLINER SPARKASSE |
 INSIGHTS FOR THE INQUISITIVE
The Berliner Sparkasse’s engagement takes many forms.
The most recent example is its cooperation with the Museum
of Natural History in Berlin. The Museum and the Spar-
kasse share the goal of wanting to enable everyone to have
easy access to knowledge. The two partners are jointly
planning a series of events entitled “Insights”. At the
stand, guests can learn more about it and about other joint
activities. Exciting competitions, little trophies and “Aha!”
moments await both older and younger guests – providing
 insights, indeed!

 robot.

 BERTELSMANN STIFTUNG |
JOIN IN – FOR VIBRANT DEMOCRACY
The Bertelsmann Stiftung works to encourage everyone to
participate in society – in the fields of politics, business
and culture. Its focus is on the individual. The Stiftung
explores the various forms of political involvement. How
can we bolster our democracy? How can we improve the
dialogue between the people who live here and people
who are active in politics? Hands-on activities at the stand
invite people to engage in discussion.

 CHILDREN’S RIGHTS
Education gives every single person the chance to discover
their talents and potential. Coach e.V. works to promote
equal access to education and equal opportunities by pro-
viding individual advice, support and sponsorship services
to children and young people and their parents. What does
equal access to education mean? At the stand, guests can
get creative on this issue in the crafts and painting work-
shop and talk to other people about the UN Convention on
