Volunteering for the Branch Network
The events in the following pages were put together entirely by the volunteers of the CIOT/ATT Branch
Commitees.
If you would like to get more involved with your local tax professionals, please come along to one of your
local events and speak to your local branch committee, or email us at branches@tax.org.uk for more
information.
What does being a branch volunteer mean for you?
Being a branch volunteer is an excellent way to raise your profile in your local tax community. The
Branch Committees are open to volunteers at any stage of their career and can offer opportunities to
suit a range of skills and experience.
Benefits of volunteering
• Opportunities to exchange views and experiences with fellow tax professionals, further developing
your personal and professional networks
• Opportunities to establish professional relationships with local firms, tax authorities and
government departments
• A contribution to your annual CPD requirement
• Excellent additional material for your CV
• A potential route into CIOT or ATT Council
The duties of the Branch Committee are to:
• To promote the values of the Institute and Association to the wider public in accordance with our
charitable objectives and to promote our Professional Standards
• To facilitate education of local branch members of the CIOT and ATT and members of the public
• To be ambassadors for the CIOT and ATT in the region
• To provide a core programme of Technical CPD to local branch members of the CIOT and ATT and
members of the public
• To build up good relations on a local level, with other professional bodies, firms and other relevant
3rd parties
• To provide an opportunity for members and non-members to meet other tax professionals and
share technical issues
If you would like to get involved, we would love to hear from you. 3

www.att.org.uk/branchesWe are delighted to take on the role of Chair of the Branches Network this year. Malachy will be a hard act to follow and we’d
BRANCH like to extend our thanks to him for his sterling efforts over the last few years. As working mothers of young children, sharing
NETWORK
the role of chairing the Branches Forum was an ideal solution and reflects the willingness of the CIOT and ATT to adapt and
change to meet the needs of its members in today’s working world.
CO-CHAIRS The Branch Network continues to offer members and non-members a varied programme of high quality CPD at a reasonable
cost, thus meeting one of its aims to educate members and non-members. As well as technical courses, the Branches also
offer soft skills training, events tailored to those earlier on in their careers and social events. Hopefully, there is something for
everyone, specialists, general practitioners, large firms and small firms.
As well as the education side, attending events gives you an opportunity to network with others and share knowledge
and experience. Branch events are typically informal and friendly and so we would encourage everyone to take these
opportunities.
It is very rewarding being involved in the Branch Network, so we would encourage you to become involved. We have certainly
made some good friends by being involved as well as learning some new skills and gaining new experiences. We hope
over the period of our Chairship that we can encourage others to get involved in their local branches. The Branch Network
depends on volunteers to continue to run effectively and (as we personally know) even with limited time it is possible to have
an impact and be involved.
We are looking forward to the challenges that come with this role and we look forward to hearing any feedback on the
Branches Network, of where it works or doesn’t work.
We also hope to meet lots of you on the way.

Co-Chairs
Branches Network
CHAIR OF The New Tax Professionals (“NTP”) network is continuing to grow its offering and reach following its formation a few years
ago. Students or members of CIOT/ATT who are in the first ten years of their career in tax constitute “NTPs” and our aim is
THE NTP to encourage engagement between the CIOT/ATT and NTPs.
COMMITTEE We host events organised centrally through the NTP from ‘soft skills’ and social events to ‘general interest topics’ that
are particularly relevant to those in the early part of their career (such as our recent panel discussion on the evolution
of tax technology). In addition to these events we also look to promote the Branches Network to NTPs and hope to
grow participation in this manner through widening the geographic scope of our committee and continuing to work
collaboratively with local branch committee members.
Over the past 12 months, we are proud to have successfully forged links with NTP organisations in other European
countries through promoting the CIOT/ATT NTP success story within CFE Tax Advisors Europe. We also look forward to
building our links with other organisations, such as Women in Tax, as we look to replicate the successful joint NTP and WiT
event hosted in connection with International Women’s Day and also explore issues facing those that have taken a career
break from the tax profession and supporting those individuals as they return to work.
Our events and the NTP initiative in general have had the benefit of valuable support from past and current Presidents
and Council members who recognise the need to engage with those in the early stages of the profession. We look forward
to developing our network and programme of events over the next 12 months.
To contact the New Tax Professionals committee please email ntp@tax.org.uk. We are always keen to hear from anyone
who would like to be involved in the development of our network and also very open to suggestions from NTPers on the
types of events and initiatives they would like the CIOT/ATT to offer.

Chair
New Tax Professionals Joint Committee
CHAIR It seems that the UK tax system rarely stands still and this is perhaps especially true in Scotland. The Scotland
Act 2012 passed additional revenue raising powers to the Scottish parliament and fundamentally changed the
OF THE tax landscape in Scotland. As a result, it was necessary to expand CIOT/ATT's capabilities in Scotland so in 2013
the existing Scotland Branch was reformed into a Hub steering committee with new local Branches established in
SCOTLAND Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. The Scottish Borders Branch was formed shortly afterwards and each of these
branches continues to flourish driven by a talented pool of motivated volunteers.
HUB In addition to the fully devolved tax powers, Scottish taxation was further complicated when The Scotland Act 2016
provided the Scottish parliament with the ability to set its own tax rates and bands for some, but not all, types of
income and subsequent years have seen income tax in Scotland diverge from that in the rest of the UK.
To help our members deal with the complexities of Scottish taxation in addition to UK-wide tax issues, the local
Branches arrange a series of technical seminars each year, often working together with other professional bodies,
where members and other stakeholders can learn and expand their professional network. In addition, the Hub
organises the Scotland Annual Tax Conference in November of each year which attracts some of the UK’s top tax
speakers and politicians.
We are always keen to hear from members who want to assist whether at local Branch level or, for instance, to help
inform future tax policy through input into the CIOT Scottish Technical Committee. So please do get in touch via
scotland@tax.org.uk if you want to get more involved in the constantly evolving arena of Scottish taxation.

COMMITTEE OUR EVENTS
Herschel Santineer | Vice Chair For the next few years we have decided that it would
01622 744403 be good to try something new for our members, being
round table discussion groups. The sessions will have
Lesley Carrington | Treasurer limited space to make the most of the group and we will
be touring the county. They are intended to consist of
Phillip Kearsey | Working Together Liaison Officer discussions of our practical experiences relating to the
01227 373271 topics, with one or two speakers from outside of the
accountancy/tax profession joining the group to lead the
Gareth Bridgland discussion. However, this is intended to be an interactive
session, so please come armed with something to talk
Terrence Ogden about!
The intention is that the following year we will run
similar sessions in those locations that have not
discussed that topic. As always, we are pleased to hear
of any suggestions for topics or what you feel would

be helpful to you; and of course, we are always looking
for more willing volunteers to join our committee – just
drop the committee an email on kent@tax.org.uk if you
want to know more.
