DANCE INTER FACES
CANARY ISLANDS − LEAL.LAV
JAN 24th-27th 2019
LA LAGUNA (TENERIFE)

II DANCE INTER FACES is the second edition of an international meeting of programmers,
mediators and curators which is held biannually in La Laguna (Tenerife). It is coordinated by the
Laboratory of Live Arts (directed by Javier Cuevas) for Teatro Leal in La Laguna. This project is
focused on dance and contemporary body & movement practices generated in Canary Islands and
it aims to promote and internationalize dance made by artists from this region.

II DANCE INTER FACES invites a selection of national and international professionals from the
realm of dance, as well as programmers from regional exhibition centers to connect with eight
carefully selected scenic proposals of dance and movement arts. The selection of artists that will
showcase their work has been made by all participants that have submitted their project to the
open call. The scenic proposals will be presented in a shorter format of 20 minutes each along
two days. The program also includes meetings, professional talks between attending artists and
programmers, presentations of local projects as well as visits to places of cultural and touristic
interest in La Laguna and Tenerife. Dance Inter Faces is approached as a window of opportunity
for artists, programmers as well as for the general public to enjoy presentations in different mid-
length duration formats of dance and movement practices that represent the Contemporary
Creation in Canary Islands.

The Laboratory of Live Arts is a contemporary scenic arts project focused on research,
production, training, mediation and exhibition. It was created in 2012 by Javier Cuevas, currently
the Artistic Director. Between 2012 and 2018 The Laboratory has hosted more than 20 artistic
residencies, around 30 professional training programs, continuous mediation activities and
nearly 100 performances of regional, national and international artists and companies.
The Laboratory of Live Arts continues its work to generate highly caring spaces for creative
processes, artists and cultural contexts in small formats to promote experimentation and
research, considering the outermost regions as a paradigm of a new centre.

II DANCE INTER FACES is a project by Javier Cuevas for the Laboratory of Live Arts of Teatro Leal
La Laguna with the support of Acción Cultural Española (ACE), Cabildo de Tenerife and the
Government of Canary Islands.

GOALS AND CONTENTS
The goals of 2019’s edition of DIF are focused on:

   • The national and international promotion of dance and movement arts created in Canary
Islands and/or by Canarian artists; the regional promotion of dance made in Canary
Islands, mainly among programmers linked to insular and regional circuits of theatre and
       dance.
   • The creation of networks between different spaces on a regional, national and international
level to seek support, follow-up and co-production for projects as well as potential linkages
between projects and artists from different territories.
   • The promotion of the city of La Laguna, Tenerife and Canary Islands as a place that shows a
special sensibility for Contemporary Dance and as a territory that hosts a research on new
       models and caring relationships.
   • To make the public acquainted to the new practices and languages that dance made in
Canary Islands has acquired. We intend to achieve that by showing the works in a short but
rigorous format and by involving the audience in the selection of a project that will receive
       the Public’s Prize.
   • The strengthening of the relational and professional network of dance and contemporary
movement practices by enhancing the encounter of artists themselves with the practices of
other fellow artists and by making them participate in the selection process that appeal to
       a shared custody of Dance.

HOW HAS THE SELECTION PROCESS BEEN?
The Coordination Team of DIF 2019 shares the will to work horizontally in the sense of having a
shared custody of public resources. Likewise, we trust the opportunity we have as artists and
curators to embrace this selection process in a mature and responsible way. The contents (to be
shown in the live performances) have been selected by the same artists who presented their own
projects to the Open Call for proposals at DIF 2019. This participative and horizontal selection
procedure has been agreed by the artists as well.

Therefore, after an anonymous and individual voting process, 8 scenic pieces have been selected
and they will represent dance and contemporary body and movement practices in Canary Islands
at DIF 2019.

               WHO ARE THE SELECTED ARTISTS?
                          Carmelo Fernández, Indicaciones artificiales
Carmen Fumero, Un poco de nadie
                             Carmen Macías, Y también mañana
                                  Daniel Morales, Invisible
                                  Darío Barreto, Moonlight
Raquel Ponce, Taller de público para público
                             Tamara Ascanio, La voz transparente
                              Carlota Mantecón, Gimnástica Off

to participate in the professional meeting sessions MEET THE ARTISTS.
