A program of Catholic Charities Hawai’i funded in part by the State of Hawaii via contract with
the State Executive Office on Aging (EOA) and the C&C of Honolulu, Elderly Affairs Division, and
a Persons In Need grant from the May Templeton Hopper Fund of the Hawai`i Community Foundation..A MESSAGE FROM SUSIE
Dear Lanakila Senior Center Ohana:
May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii nei. Please join the City and County of Honolulu, our senior center and others, by sewing a
lei and placing it on your house door or fence (someplace visible to the public) to say thank you to our first responders
and essential workers who continue to give of themselves to serve and protect our community.
May is also a time when we celebrate Mother’s Day. Please thank those who have been “mom” to you in your lives. We
hope you enjoy our tribute to all the mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, sisters, friends, daughters,
granddaughters, and others who are moms and wish them a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9th.
We also remember our dear friends and family members who have passed away. We cherish them and will hold them
close in our hearts always. This year, Memorial Day is on Monday, May 31, 2021. Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center
is still not able to have our annual Memorial Program to honor our center members. When the State and County
policies permit larger events, we will hold a special memorial to remember and express our gratitude for the privilege of
knowing them.
A special letter will be mailed to all center members with details about the reopening of Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior
Center, so please look out for it in the mail delivered by the U.S. Postal Service in the next two weeks.
Finally, April was not only Volunteer Appreciation
Month, but also Staff Appreciation Day. I want to
thank Custodian Lodi Tapawan, Membership
Specialist Iris Hiramoto, Program Specialist Riva
Torno, and Program Support Assistant Cookie
Irvine or their unwavering commitment to our
Members and our senior center. Their commit-
ment, dedicated service and hard work truly makes
our senior center a special place!!

You may not know what shibazakura is, but you definitely want to see it.

The shibazakura, or moss phlox, is a flower that can be enjoyed in Japan after

Sakura (cherry blossoms), these flowers blossom slightly later, between April Betty Honma
to May, and bloom into tiny flowers. Since these colorful five-petaled flowers Juliana Iniba
resemble cherry blossoms and blanket the entire ground like a lawn (shiba) in Elsie Ishiki
Japanese, they have been named “shibazakura”. The Fuji Shibazakura Festival Tsuyako “Tsu” Iwamoto

Experiencing Homelessness can get Econoimic Impact Payment
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) continues to remind people who don’t have a permanent address or a bank
account that they may still qualify for Economic Impact Payments, also known as stimulus payments. The IRS
needs information from people who don’t usually file, and for the agency to have that information is for people
to file a basic 2020 tax return with the IRS. The fastest and easiest way is to file a return electronically using IRS
Free File. For more information, check out the outreach material, available on Internal Revenue Service | An
official website of the United States government (irs.gov).
Special Enrollment
You or someone you know may be eligible for savings and lower costs on Marketplace health insurance due to
the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. To learn more, visit www.Healthcare.gov.
HOLO Card Replaces Paper Passes
Starting July 1, 2021, paper Monthly TheBus Passes and the 1-Day Pass will no longer be available for purchase.
Instead, riders will need to have the HOLO card, an electronic fare card. It will need to be loaded with money
prior to ride. Passengers, however, will still have the option of paying with cash on TheBus. Adult HOLO cards
can be purchased at local retailers or TheBus Pass Office. Visit here for a list of retailers: www.holocard.net.
