SNA wants you to share these with us, so we can paint a compelling picture in our efforts to get greater government support. We want to hear about: • Delivery contract changes or cancellations • Cancelled orders
• Product shortages and substitutions • Price increases • Time spent with vendors trying to find essential products/alternatives • Purchase of school food/supplies from retail outlets • Menu changes due to supply chain problems • Menu changes due to labor shortages • Service changes due to labor shortages • Number of position vacancies • Changes in recruitment strategies; including new financial incentives • Student/parent feedback regarding menu/service changes • Impact of menu/service changes on participation • Student/parent feedback regarding increased use of disposable foodservice ware • District administration response to financial losses Visit School Nutrition Association Action Network to share your stories today! ___________________________________________________________________ Institute of Child Nutrition - Produce Safety University Self-Nominations Produce Safety University (PSU) is an experiential learning program offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) that immerses child nutrition professionals in the fresh produce supply chain and arms them with tools and knowledge to address real life scenarios, critically analyze and respond to food safety issues, and teach others critical produce safety concepts and practices. Participants learn to identify and manage food safety risks associated with fresh produce whether purchased from farmers or distributors, received whole or fresh-cut, or grown in a school garden. On behalf of FNS, ICN invites you to submit your self-nomination for the 2022 PSU program, which will be delivered virtually and includes five sessions offered during March, April, and May 2022. Participants will be considered based on their active role in training school nutrition staff at the district level and/or produce procurement responsibilities. Participants will be expected and encouraged to teach others about produce safety using the training materials provided through PSU.
To be considered for selection, each nominee is required to submit an electronic self-nomination form by December 1, 2021. For further information, visit Produce Safety University. If you have any questions please contact Producesafetyuniversity@usda.gov. ___________________________________________________________________ Unanticipated School Closure (USC) SFSP Training If you are planning to participate in USC SFSP this year, please join us for a mandatory webinar December 7th from 2:00pm to 3:30pm. The campaign was informed by input from school nutrition directors across the state, and includes family-facing digital communications and customizable tools school nutrition professionals can use at the local level. The first set of customizable tools are available now and include email/newsletter content, flyer/handout for printing, logo and a style guide. These materials can be customized to make them specific to each school district in Michigan. Updates to the guidance emphasize the importance of universal masking for everyone ages 2 and older, regardless of vaccination status. Additionally, this guidance provides more information on screening testing and updated guidance for fully vaccinated staff. Early Care Education (ECE) programs can promote vaccinations among staff and families, including pregnant women, by providing
information about COVID-19 vaccination, encouraging vaccine trust and confidence, and establishing supportive policies and practices. The updated version of the guidance outlines strategies for ECE programs to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and maintain safer operations. ECE programs include childcare centers, home-based programs and family child care, Head Start, and other pre-kindergarten programs. While fewer children have been sick with COVID-19 compared with adults during the pandemic, children can be infected with the virus that causes COVID- 19, get sick, and spread the virus to others. CDC’s science brief on transmission in schools includes scientific evidence about the spread of the virus among children and in school and ECE settings. We encourage you to widely share the updated guidance with your partners and networks and on your organization’s social media pages. ________________________________________________________________ Training Corner Tuesday at 2 Join MDE’s Office of Health and Nutrition Services for a Tuesdays at 2 pm training.
