Linking MILogin and MEIS
We want to remind everyone about the messages coming through MEGS+
requesting users to create a MILogin for Third Party account and link that account to
their current MEIS account.

This is a requirement and the first step in the transition to our new system, NexSys.
If you haven’t done this already, please do so as soon as possible. Instructions on
how to complete this are available.

By getting this step done now, it will save time and added stress when users are
finally required to access and work in NexSys.

Share Your Supply Chain Story with SNA
School nutrition professionals do their jobs so well, and with such deep dedication,
that many policymakers and decision-influencers lack a full understanding of the

kids every day. SNA wants you to share these with us, so we can paint a compelling
picture in our efforts to get greater government support. We want to hear about:

   • Delivery contract changes or cancellations

Institute of Child Nutrition - Produce Safety University
Self-Nominations
Produce Safety University (PSU) is an experiential learning program offered by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) that
immerses child nutrition professionals in the fresh produce supply chain and arms
them with tools and knowledge to address real life scenarios, critically analyze and
respond to food safety issues, and teach others critical produce safety concepts and
practices. Participants learn to identify and manage food safety risks associated
with fresh produce whether purchased from farmers or distributors, received whole
or fresh-cut, or grown in a school garden.

On behalf of FNS, ICN invites you to submit your self-nomination for the 2022 PSU
program, which will be delivered virtually and includes five sessions offered during
March, April, and May 2022.

Participants will be considered based on their active role in training school nutrition
staff at the district level and/or produce procurement responsibilities. Participants
will be expected and encouraged to teach others about produce safety using the
training materials provided through PSU.
To be considered for selection, each nominee is required to submit an electronic
self-nomination form by December 1, 2021.

For further information, visit Produce Safety University. If you have any questions
please contact Producesafetyuniversity@usda.gov.

Michigan’s Mighty Meals
Michigan Department of Education recently kicked off Michigan’s Mighty
Meals which is a state-wide communication campaign to encourage and boost the
message to caregivers and students that every student in Michigan can eat a school
meal at no cost this school year. Michigan’s Mighty Meals seeks to increase meal
participation, improve perceptions of school meals, and support the great work that
school districts have achieved across our state in feeding students!

The campaign was informed by input from school nutrition directors across the
state, and includes family-facing digital communications and customizable tools
school nutrition professionals can use at the local level. The first set of
customizable tools are available now and include email/newsletter content,
flyer/handout for printing, logo and a style guide. These materials can be
customized to make them specific to each school district in Michigan. To stay up to
date or learn more about Mighty Meals, opt-in to our emails or texts.

Updates, Guidance, and Regulation Information from
the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Food and Nutrition Services
New! Team Nutrition School Breakfast Web Quiz

USDA’s Team Nutrition initiative is proud to announce the release of the School
Breakfast web quiz. All Team Nutrition web quizzes are available, and topics of
other quizzes include Infant Nutrition (English and Spanish), Toddler Nutrition
(English and Spanish), and School Lunch. Additional quiz topics will be released
throughout Fall and Winter 2021-2022.

As a reminder, these 10-question quizzes can be used by State agency staff at
trainings and other nutrition events as a fun learning activity. Upon completion of
each quiz, quiz takers receive a score along with a link to resources that can
help expand their knowledge on the topic and build their nutrition skills. Quiz
takers can also view a printable version of the questions and answers upon quiz
completion. These web quizzes are available as a widget, so State agencies
can easily embed and feature the quiz on their websites.

State agencies are encouraged to share this announcement with their Child
Nutrition Program operators and others who may be interested.

Questions about this announcement may be sent to TeamNutrition@USDA.gov.

Updated COVID-19 Guidance for Operating Early Care and
Education/Child Care Programs

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its COVID-
19 Guidance for Operating Early Care and Education/Child Care Programs.
Updates to the guidance emphasize the importance of universal masking for
everyone ages 2 and older, regardless of vaccination status. Additionally, this
guidance provides more information on screening testing and updated guidance
for fully vaccinated staff. Early Care Education (ECE) programs can promote
vaccinations among staff and families, including pregnant women, by providing
information about COVID-19 vaccination, encouraging vaccine trust and
confidence, and establishing supportive policies and practices.

The updated version of the guidance outlines strategies for ECE programs to
reduce the spread of COVID-19 and maintain safer operations. ECE programs
include childcare centers, home-based programs and family child care, Head
Start, and other pre-kindergarten programs.

While fewer children have been sick with COVID-19 compared with adults
during the pandemic, children can be infected with the virus that causes COVID-
19, get sick, and spread the virus to others. CDC’s science brief on transmission
in schools includes scientific evidence about the spread of the virus among
children and in school and ECE settings.

We encourage you to widely share the updated guidance with your partners and
networks and on your organization’s social media pages.

Michigan Nutrition Training Calendar

During this time of necessary social distancing, it is very important for the field to
have access to all the virtual trainings available to them, to help them continue
to do their jobs. If you are offering an online/virtual training, please fill out and
submit this questionnaire: I want my training added to the Michigan Nutrition
Training Calendar. Be sure to fill out ALL of the information including NA if the
question does not apply. Trainings cannot be added to the calendar without the
complete information.

Please visit the Michigan Nutrition Training Calendar, a one-stop-shop calendar
that lists child nutrition trainings across the state. The more trainings listed, the
better the calendar will be for our Child Nutrition Programs!

If you have questions, contact MDE-MINutritionTraining@michigan.gov.

                            Frequently Asked Questions
Question: What guidance does MDE have about
                            supply chain issues?

Answer: Check out the Supply Chain Challenges
webpage. There are resources from national
organizations like USDA and SNA, but also guidance
from MDE. That guidance includes Meal Pattern
                            Flexibility Waivers and Emergency Procurement.
Specific questions can be emailed to MDE-
                            SchoolNutrition@michigan.gov

                            ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: My school got a new student with special diet needs. What
paperwork needs to be filled out?

Answer: It is a Child Nutrition Program requirement to make accommodations
for special medical needs and disabilities. MDE has an updated Special Diet
Accommodations Guide and Form posted on our website. It is important to have
a written special diet accommodation request form completed for each student
who has a medical need affecting their diet. If you have specific dietary needs
questions, please email Emily Mattern at MatternE@michigan.gov
