CHIMING OF THE HOUR & WELCOMING THE LIGHT GREETINGS Rev. Martha Shiverick CALL TO WORSHIP Anna Rosas Christ has risen. Christ has risen indeed God is alive… New birth is given. Hope is alive… A new age is dawning. Joy is alive… Redemption is here. Love is alive… Death cannot harm us. We are alive… New life is within us. God’s spirit is within us. God of life, we worship you. God of creation, we praise you. God of revelation, we learn from you. God of resurrection, we are here to celebrate you. EASTER PRAYER Dr. Walter Busse Powerful and loving God, you have raised Jesus Christ from the dead. God, raise us too. May fresh life burst among us like buds awakening to the spring. May shells of distrust and self-hatred, which keep us from loving, be broken away so that new life can emerge. May new community spring up where fear has kept us from the stranger. Keep us patient in making peace and building justice. Teach us to trust the slow process from seed to stem, from stem to flower, from flower to fruit. Breath on us with your Spirit, through Jesus Christ. Amen. 3
CHILDREN’S SERMON Anna Rosas CHILDREN’S SONG THE WORD PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Rev. Rosemary Noga Welton Living God, with joy we celebrate the presence of your risen Word. Enliven our hearts by your Holy Spirit so that we may proclaim the Good News of eternal and abundant life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. SCRIPTURE READING NRSV Rev. Rosemary Noga Welton JOHN 20:1-18 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, 4
and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples returned to their homes. 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look[a]into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew,[b] “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. STATEMENT OF FAITH - A Brief Statement of Faith (7-26, 77-79) Rev. Dr. David Welton We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God. Preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives. Teaching by word and deed and blessing the children. Healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. ANTHEM Christ Is Alive SERMON Rev. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER Rev. Rosemary Noga Welton and Rev. Dr. David Welton Eternal God, we praise you that your glory has dawned on us and brought us to this Day of Resurrection. We rejoice that the grave could not hold your Son, and that he has conquered death, risen to rule over all powers of this earth. We praise you that he summons us into a new life, to follow him with joy and gladness. By your spirit, lift us from doubt and despair, and set our feet in Christ’s holy way, that our lives may be signs of his life, and all we have may show forth his love. So, you send us out to be Christ’s love to the world, so we pray that you be with us as we continue to share love and acceptance to all and to work for justice and a day when your realm will be on earth. We pray all this in Christ’s name who also taught us to pray in this manner: For the Lord’s Prayer we appreciate the diverse traditions and backgrounds that make up the Riviera family of faith and encourage you to use whatever words for this prayer are meaningful for you. Our Creator, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kin-dom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kin-dom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. In keeping with our Earth Care Congregation Pledge to be mindful that our personal and collective actions can positively or negatively affect our neighborhood, region, nation and world; this year in lieu of adorning our sanctuary with Easter Lilies the Mission Committee was presented with an amazing opportunity to positively affect our local community and in turn honor and remember our loved ones with a donation that will provide environmental benefits to our region. You not only stepped up to the Mission Committee Challenge of donating 30 Slash Pine Trees for the Pine Rockland Restoration taking place in Goulds Park, located at 11350 SW 216 ST in Miami, but you surpassed the challenge and donated 37 trees. 11

In a world of disaster, hunger, and oppression Millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. The three programs supported by One Great Hour of Sharing - Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People - all work in different ways to serve individuals and communities in need. From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, their work fits together to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope. The Mission Committee has set a challenge goal of $400 for the 2021 OGHS Offering and in light of the challenges we have witnessed over the past year they encourage you give strong consideration of participating in this offering; if you are able. If all members give $10 we will surpass our goal. Please help if you are able. https://rivierachurch.org/give/ Providing food for the hungry Resourcing communities working to cast off the bonds of poverty and oppression 13
