Timeline of clinical notifications and ATAGI recommendations

March 2021: Overseas reports suggest a potential safety concern following AZ COVID-19 vaccination involving
cases of ‘thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome’ (TTS) - a newly described serious condition with unusual
blood clots in the brain (cerebral venous sinus thrombosis) or in other parts of the body. These blood clots are
associated with low platelet levels and can cause serious long-term disability or death.

2 April 2021: a probable case had been reported in an Australian vaccine recipient, and ATAGI issued
an updated advice for healthcare providers warning to be alert for serious or ongoing side effects following
vaccination.

8 April 2021: ATAGI released updated recommendations about the AstraZeneca vaccine in response to further
evidence that it may be linked to this rare but serious side effect. ATAGI recommendations were updated to
reflect Pfizer vaccine as the preferred COVID-19 Vaccine (over AstraZeneca) in adults aged under 50
years.

                                                   OFFICIAL
Rare side effect from AstraZeneca
There is evidence of rare but serious side effect involving thrombosis (blood clotting) after people receive
their first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine.

• The risk of developing this side-effect following receipt of the AstraZeneca vaccine is extremely rare.
• It is recommended that people who are aged over 50 years receive AstraZeneca. This advice is based
both on the increased risk of complications from COVID-19 with increasing age (and thus increased
benefit of vaccination), and the potentially lower, but not zero, risk of blood clotting (thrombosis with
     thrombocytopenia syndrome) with increasing age.

• The new age-based recommendations are made out of an abundance of caution and the benefits of the
COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccination outweigh the risks for the vast majority of people.
