A wide selection of interesting and trending stories – rip ‘em, read ‘em and post
                                       ‘em!
                         FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2021
TODAY IS…
  • AMERICAN TOUCH-TAG DAY -- Remember when this used to be an excuse to
‘accidentally’ grope your high school crush? Yeah, that was never cool! Touch tag has
actually been around since ancient Roman times (because watching gladiators fight to the
death got boring after a while).

  • WORLD EGG DAY -- The International Egg Commission has declared October 8th as
‘World Egg Day.’ Now, go hatch a plan on how to celebrate.

  • NATIONAL FLUFFERNUTTER DAY -- Screw nutrition! A Fluffernutter is a sandwich
made with Fluff and peanut butter. Fluff is made out of marshmallows, sugar and probably a
bunch of other stuff that’ll give you diabetes - but MAN is it gooey! It was invented in 1913 -
back then they called it Snowflake Marshmallow cream.

  • NATIONAL PIEROGI DAY -- Celebrating the traditional Polish dumplings often stuffed
      with potato and cheese.
DID YOU KNOW?…Glendon, Alberta (in Canada) is home to a giant 6000-pound, 25-foot-
tall pierogi. Don’t try eating it, it’s made of fiberglass.

  • PREMIERE OF JAMES BOND: ‘NO TIME TO DIE’ -- 007 returns to the big screen
today with the premiere of 'No Time to Die', the 25th James Bond movie and the last one for
Daniel Craig. It already opened in London last week, where some reviewers say it’s packed
with surprises and could be the best one ever made.

  • RELEASE OF NEW NINTENDO SWITCH -- Nintendo's new Switch console hits
stores today. It’s got a new 7-inch OLED display along with 64-gigs of storage making 2017s
original Switch look about as outdated as an old toaster oven.
SATURDAY IS…
 • FIRE PREVENTION DAY -- Commemorating the Great Chicago Fire (of 1911). If you
haven’t already, come up with an escape plan for your home. Check the batteries in your
smoke detectors and teach the kids how to ‘Stop Drop and Roll’.

 • INTERNATIONAL BEER AND PIZZA DAY -- Celebrating the ultimate ‘weekend food’
combination and the ferocious burps you’ll have later.

 • NATIONAL COSTUME SWAP DAY -- It’s almost 3-weeks till Halloween. No need to
go out and buy a new costume for the kids when you can just swap last year’s with a
friend. Just don’t try it with any of the costumes from your private bedroom collection, unless
you want to get the neighbors talking.

 • NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE RIDE DAY (2nd Saturday in October) -- Maybe your
last chance of the year to hit the road. Honoring John B Dunlop, the inventor of the first
rubber, inflatable tire in 1887. ‘Cause you can’t ride a motorcycle with wooden wheels.

 • LIGHTING OF THE JOHN LENNON ‘IMAGINE’ PEACE TOWER -- In Iceland,
they’ll light up the ‘Imagine’ Peace tower in honor of John Lennon on what would have been
his 81st birthday. It’ll remain illuminated until December the 8th, the date Lennon was shot.

SUNDAY IS…
 • WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY -- Raising awareness for mental health issues. About
4% of the world’s population has a form of anxiety disorder. In the United States, it affects 1-
     out of every-5 people.

 • NATIONAL ANGEL FOOD CAKE DAY -- Celebrate the delicious, fluffy cake that is
shockingly low on calories (depending on what you top it with).

 • NATIONAL HANDBAG DAY -- It’s National Handbag Day…in case you need an
excuse to buy yourself a new one. Handbags have been around for thousands of years. Our
ancestors used them to carry tools and ceremonial gear. And probably some makeup.

 • NATIONAL HUG A DRUMMER DAY -- A salute to the band members who keep the
beat and tap our feet. Paging Dave Grohl, Tommy Lee, Phil Collins, and Ringo Starr. (We
     love you, yeah, yeah, yeah.)
 • FUN FACTS:
     • The first modern drum kit as we know it was created by William Ludwig in 1909.
     • Drumming burns more calories in a half hour session than cycling, weight lifting, and
hiking (that’s why rockstars are so skinny, not because of all the cocaine).
     • The world’s largest drum kit has 813 pieces, and it took 36 years to build!
     • The most expensive drum set ever sold at auction was a 1962 set owned by the Beatles’
Ringo Starr. It was sold for $2.1 million dollars!

BALD GUYS NOW WEARING ‘I’M NOT BRIAN LAUNDRIE’ T-SHIRT (00:23)
You know how there have been all these Brian Laundrie sightings that turn out to be just another
bald guy with a beard? Now, some look-a-likes are getting proactive by wearing specially-made T-
shirts that say “I’m not Brian Laundrie. I’m just bald”. Apparently, the fugitive has a lot of
doppelgängers; the 23-dollar T-shirts are selling like crazy online, even making it to ‘Etsytees’
‘hottest items’ list.
WHY SOCIAL MEDIA HATES THIS YEAR’S ‘KAREN’ HALLOWEEN COSTUME
(00:16)
Social Media isn’t loving one of this Halloween’s hottest costumes. The ’Karen Wig’ is
getting blasted for being tone-def and profiting from racism. The 20-dollar hair piece is modeled after
reality star Kate Gosselin’s asymmetrical ‘do’ when she was on ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8’.

TWITTER TESTING PROMPTS THAT WARN WHEN A CONVERSATION HAS BAD
VIBES (00:19)
Wanna avoid getting in the middle of a social media battle? Twitter’s now testing a new prompt that
warns you if you’re about to wade into a nasty Twitter fight. The prompts give you a heads up about
the tone of the conversation you’re about to get into. They’re hoping the prompt will help subdue the
toxicity Twitter’s become known for.

roof of a BMW parked on the street. The guy survived. The BMW didn’t.

COVID NOW CAUSING ‘RESTLESS ANUS SYNDROME’ (00:21)
Of all the bizarre side effects COVID causes, who knew ‘restless anal syndrome’ would be one of
them. Doctors in Japan have discovered some people are getting ‘spasms’ and a deep,
uncomfortable feeling in their butt. Going to the bathroom doesn’t help. They think it’s one more sign
of the kind of nervous system problems COVID causes even long after the symptoms are gone.

IS THE NHL’S TOP GOALIE TAKING A MENTAL HEALTH BREAK? (00:23)
The best goalie in Hockey has announced he’s taking an emergency leave of absence. Montreal
Canadiens star Carey Price won’t play in the season opener next week after voluntarily entering the
NHL’s player assistance program. No one’s saying exactly why but his wife posted something about
‘putting mental health first’. Price had knee surgery over the summer and was ‘iffy’ about starting the
season anyway.

FIREFIGHTERS CAN’T BELIEVE THEY SCALED A CLIFF TO RESCUE A DUMMY
(00:20)
Rescuers in California were called to a cliffside in Santa Barbara when someone down below
noticed a woman hanging from the edge. The fire department sent a drone up to get a closer look.
Turns out it was just a movie prop. A film crew was shooting there a few days earlier and forgot to
take their dummy. The fire department isn’t happy about it.

COPS PULL OVER SPEEDER, THEN HOOK UP HIS TV (00:13)

AMERICA HAS A LOT MORE STATUES OF MERMAIDS THAN OF
CONGRESSWOMEN (00:21)
What does this say about us: Data was collected on nearly 50-thousand different monuments in
America. It found we have eleven times more statues of mermaids than we have of congresswomen.
Most monuments are of white men. The report says you're far more likely to run into a symbol of war
or conquest than you are to see community building, public health, or education representation.
ALASKA PICKS 1,000 POUND 'FAT BEAR WEEK' WINNER (00:22)
In Alaska, they've chosen the winner of Fat Bear Week. Can't get 'em on a scale, but you can guess!
There were twelve contestants, but Otis the bear came in first place weighing somewhere between a
thousand and 14-hundred pounds. He's a four-time champ now. Otis is 25-years-old and missing
some teeth. But locals say even though he's older than most, he's still pretty good at fishing.

LAW & DISORDER
EX-NBA PLAYERS ARRESTED IN FRAUD SCHEME (00:24)
18 former NBA stars have been charged in a multi-million-dollar scam, including Terrence Williams,
Tony Allen, Jamario Moon, and Big Baby Davis. They’re accused of ripping off millions from the
league’s health plan by submitting bogus doctor invoices. Their first clue: on one invoice,
‘chiropractor’ was spelled wrong. And one of them claimed 13 root canals on the same tooth. If
convicted, they could each get up to 20 years.

FAMILY OF TEXAS SCHOOL SHOOTING SUSPECT SAYS HE WAS JUST
‘PROTECTING HIMSELF’ (00:19)
The family of the kid accused of shooting up a high school in Arlington, Texas yesterday says there’s
more to the story and they hope the cops do their job to uncover it. An 18-year-old has been charged
with shooting 4 people. His family says they’re not justifying taking a gun to class, but, they say, he
was trying to protect himself (isn’t that what Karate is for?)

MOB BOSSES HATE CELL PHONE-OBSESSED GENERATION Z (00:28)
With the way Millennials are attached to their phones, New York's mob bosses don't wanna hand
over the family business. They say the younger generation got too soft growing up in the suburbs.
Threats once handled face-to-face are now done over text, making it easy for the Feds to access.
(And really 'this is your third warning,' doesn't have the same punch over an iPhone!) Recently one
'made guy' from the Colombo family who was on the run was forced to turn himself in. His son
tweeted a photo of him relaxing in a pool and gave away the fact his dad was hiding out in Florida.

ANOTHER MICHIGAN CITY WITH HIGH LEVELS OF LEAD IN ITS DRINKING
WATER (00:22)
In Michigan, another city has issued a warning about high lead levels in their drinking water. People
in Benton Harbor are being told to boil their tap water. Activists say the lead problem has been
persistent over the last three years. The state was gonna hand out water filters, but studies on their
effectiveness have not yet finished. A similar water crisis in Flint, Michigan lasted five years.

says by 2023 the Ultra Cruise System will be able to handle 95 percent of all driving scenarios, from
highways to subdivisions to parking in your driveway. The Ultra Cruise system will first be released
on Cadillac models. It uses camera, radars, and remote sensors. Still, the system does require a
driver's full attention, so no taking a nap in the backseat.

UNITED ADDING THOUSANDS OF FLIGHTS FOR DECEMBER HOLIDAY
TRAVEL (00:25)
Remember before the pandemic when you had your pick of flights? United Airlines is attempting to
get back to those high-flying days. We're talking 35-hundred daily flights. In time for the holidays,
United plans to offer about 90-percent of the same domestic flights it had back in December 2019,
before IT ALL hit the fan. United says they're seeing demand for two destinations, where there is
warm sunshine (Vegas & Orlando) and where there's fresh snow (Aspen).

LIFE/SURVEY SAYS…
LOOK OUT! MORE ACORNS ARE FALLING THAN USUAL (00:20)
If you’re planning to spend some time looking at the leaves changing color, heads up! No literally!
Keep your head up. More acorns than usual are falling this year. They call this a ‘mast year’ for oak
trees – that’s when they produce extra nuts. It’s good news for squirrels and other critters, but if you
park outside, your car is gonna get dinged up.

STUDY: THE CLASS CLOWN IS SMART (00:21)
Every year there's one. A class clown with fart jokes in the back of the room. They're often thought of
as silly and immature, but new research finds the class clown likely has high intelligence. For the
study a couple hundred kids were asked to write cartoon captions. Researchers found children with
higher general knowledge and higher verbal reasoning were funnier.

COLLEGE-AGE PICKY EATERS FEAR BEING JUDGED & STRESS OVER WHAT TO
EAT (00:19)

wasn't hard enough, the study found picky eaters often feel stressed over choosing what to eat.
They also have a fear of being judged.

on just about every competition show on Food Network.

WHITE NEWS ANCHORS FIRED FOR WEARING AFRO WIGS ON THE AIR (00:23)
Two white news anchors in Little Rock, Arkansas have been suspended indefinitely for wearing afro
wigs on the air. Apparently, they thought it would be a good way to celebrate the end of a 100-
degree heatwave, with what they called ‘return to the 70s’ (get it?). Even worse: it happened just a
few weeks after the entire staff was forced to take ‘sensitivity training’ for another racist incident in
the newsroom.

guy’s finger was found in the machine but…you never know.
