Fitness Initiative for Grades Pre-K through Grade 5

Welcome to Bedford Kids: Stronger Together, The Quest for 72,000 Miles and Beyond

The Bedford Recreation Department invites you to participate in an initiative designed to bring kids
(and families) together to stay strong, healthy and well during these challenging times.

In this fitness tracking program, “distance” may be calculated by actual distance (such as a hike on a
Bedford trail, laps around the track or laps around the block) or by time with 15 minutes of exercise
counting as one “mile.” All exercises and wellness activities count! From mindfulness to yoga to jog-
ging to shooting baskets to walking the dog or playing in the backyard, it all counts!

To share your information, there is a simple Google Form. You just give us your information, how
many miles you completed that day, and hit submit.

Weekly, we will randomly select a participant to feature. We will share your favorite fitness activities
    and accomplishments!

Follow the milestone link to see examples of distance travelled from Bedford. Calculate your personal
milestones, for instance, how far is it to your grandparents’ house? Individual achievement may be
tracked using the printable calendar on the Bedford Kids: Stronger Together webpage.

Group milestones will be posted periodically as well. Can we make it to 72,000 miles in one month
(roughly two miles per day per Davis and Lane student)?

Check out the site links for terrific local opportunities such as trails, athletic fields and parks.

Information about this program and associated links may be found at www.bedfordrecreation.org

We are excited to take this journey with you!

SNOW SCULPTURE CONTEST
Back in 1991, we held a Snow Sculpture Contest; the entries were outstanding and
Bedford’s landscape took on a new look! As we are spending more time at home this
winter, we thought that it would be fun to hold the event again. We hope that you will brave
the elements again and enjoy some time outdoors creating your own unique snow
                                              sculpture!

The judging panel will select winners based on originality and overall appearance. Ages
and number of participants will be considered as well. Submit your entry with family, friends
                                        or as a neighborhood!

Upon entering, please state ages and number of participants.

Judging date: March 22, 2021, but photos may be from any time during Winter 2021.

Kids’ Test Kitchen is on a mission to get young eaters cooking, tasting, and thinking about healthy ingredients! Let’s
continue to redefine “kid food” LIVE via Zoom!

Each class presents students with an opportunity to explore new or familiar foods in their raw, unmanipulated state.
Then, with adult supervision and occasional assistance, we will work together, virtually, to slice, dice, peel, measure
and cook until we have each prepared the finished dish. The virtual experience gives students the unique opportunity
to immediately share their work with family!

The winter session will highlight some of the more popular KTK recipes. We will start with a delicious opportunity to
practice knife skills and move on to recipes that include our powered-up version of pancakes, Asian inspired broccoli,
a sweet pineapple curry, and our Atypical tacos!

We will deliver shopping lists and to organize the schedule. Parents will have to sign in with their email addresses.

Younger students may require the help of a sous-chef. Set your student up for success; parent availability for
 assistance and some supervision recommended.

Please enroll all children who will participate in one transaction (on one receipt) to prompt the family discount ($83 for
family, regardless how children many participating).

Take the first steps toward independence! In this course, children will
be taught the basics of being safe when home alone for short periods
of time. Topics include how to answer the telephone and door, internet
safety, accident prevention, fire safety protection, how to call 911 and
simple first aid techniques such as how to relieve choking. We will also
talk about how to use our time wisely! This program will utilize the
Zoom platform.

                                                 Instructor: Empow

Looking for the next level of Minecraft challenge? Redstone enables you to build electronic circuits to activate and
control mechanisms, from simple light switches to complex automated farms and in-game computers. You will learn
how to affect the speed and distance of redstone signals and use logic gates, multi-system mechanisms, clocks and
more. Another advanced feature, commands, are code that instructs Minecraft to take certain actions. Command
blocks let you group together a series of commands. Imagine a command block that allows you to build an entire
building with one click! We will start simply and then progress to advanced features such as variables, conditions, and
if/then statements. Redstone and commands bring together electrical engineering, computing, and automation in a
world that kids love: Minecraft!

Do you love video games? In this class, we will channel that passion by learning to build our own! Together with like-
minded students, we will build simple video games step-by-step, experimenting with specific tasks and movements,
and sharing gameplay with our peers, while learning important STEM concepts of design, problem-solving, and trial/
error. We will learn to use the accessible game design program Flowlab — no coding required — a platform used by
many professional game designers to prototype new builds. All games will be stored online, so you can gain access
after class ends, and, if your game is approved, upload it to Google Play or the Apple Store!

Do you have a budding interest in 3D Art or Printing? Explore and be creative with us using the vast range of options
that Computer-Aided Design has to offer! In this program, we will apply the concept of Constructive Solid Geometry
toward designing a solid, often linear and symmetrical object - such as furniture, wrench, or a chess piece. TinkerCAD
is an easy and intuitive first entry-point for emerging designers, and you will engineer 3D objects that can be printed on
 a 3D printer.
