DAVID AXELROD & CHRIS CHRISTIE COLLEEN MARSHALL - January 27, 2021 MODERATED BY A discussion from
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the third lecture as part of the 2020-2021 New Albany
Lecture Series Season. Tonight’s program is presented through the
New Albany Center for Civil Discourse and Debate and features two
well-known American political figures in David Alexrod and
Chris Christie.

I’d like to acknowledge the Derrow family, whose vision and original
investment helped launch the center. We’re also grateful to the other
sponsors of tonight’s program, who are listed in the program. In addition
to presenting programs as part of the lecture series, the New Albany
Center for Civil Discourse and Debate worked with New Albany Schools
to establish debate teams in the high school and middle school. And
earlier today, thousands of high school students from across the region
had the unique opportunity to interact with Axelrod and Christie.

As you know, the political discourse in our country has become
increasingly vitriolic and divisive. At the same time, many believe that
debating has become somewhat of a lost art. The Foundation and Derrow
family endeavored to help rebuild the passion and skills to discuss and
debate the issues of the day in a thoughtful way without attacking those
with whom we disagree. And in doing so, we want to present different
perspectives and views to the community and allow everyone to arrive at
their own conclusions.

I want to thank Colleen Marshall for moderating tonight’s discussion.
Colleen is an Emmy Award–winning journalist with NBC4. She anchors
the 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. news and is the host of the weekly political
program, “NBC4’s The Spectrum.” Earlier this Fall, NBC4 served as the
Foundation’s media sponsor for our “Conversations on Social Justice”
and we’re appreciative to General Manager Ken Freedman and his entire
team, as a valued partner.

I hope you enjoy tonight’s program. Thank you for participating!

Sincerely,

Craig Mohre, President

The Conway Charitable Lead Annuity Trust is proud to support The New
Albany Lecture Series as a season sponsor for the fifth consecutive year.

The Conway family and the Conway Center for Family Business they
helped establish is dedicated to the success of family owned businesses,
which includes providing enriching educational opportunities.

The mission of the lecture series is to promote lifelong learning and to
provide a platform for civil discourse and community dialogue on timely
issues. As such, the trust and lecture series are aligned in promoting
learning opportunities made available to everyone in the community,
including area students. This past year the series reached a milestone, with
more than 15,000 students representing central Ohio schools participating
in The New Albany Lecture Series student lecture program.

“We absolutely love this impactful program,” said Steve Conway. “The
caliber of speakers, the virtual format that makes the lectures accessible, and
the opportunity for central Ohioans to interact with the influential thought
leaders all make this one of the best lecture series in America.”

Conway noted that they appreciate that the lecture series provides access
to currently serving military and military veterans, senior citizens and
disadvantaged youth. And the virtual programs this season allow even
more people to participate. He added that the series addresses issues of
importance to the central Ohio community, such as the mental health and
well-being of students, civil discourse and national security.

“Now more than ever, we need access to sound information and we need to
hear different perspectives so everyone can arrive at their own conclusions,”
said Bea Wolper, Trustee for the Conway Charitable Lead Annuity Trust.”

“The Conways live in New Albany, so they appreciate the quality of the
lectures, schools and overall community,” said Wolper. “We look forward to
another season of outstanding lectures!”

Little did we know just how prescient were those words 200+ years ago New Albany Center for Civil Discourse and Debate
and then over the course of the past 12 months. The events of the past year
bring to mind another famous quote:

“May you live in interesting times...”

A global pandemic has challenged the free world with threats to life
and health and restrictions of individual liberty unprecedented during
peacetime, and our leaders have struggled to justify the continuation of
those restrictions as necessary for the common good.

During the summer, and in the midst of the pandemic, we saw hundreds of
protests in support of important social justice causes, particularly the Black
Lives Matter movement, with some turning violent.

An unconventional President lost his reelection bid, and then failed
to actively promote the single most important test of our republic —
acceptance of electoral defeat and the peaceful transition of power —
ultimately leading to a violent uprising at the United States Capitol building.

In 2020, two fundamental
   priorities emerged.
       Our health.
   And our humanity.
While we entered the year with a carefully constructed plan, a global pandemic and a movement
to advance social justice put those plans on hold. So we shifted our focus and asked you to join us.
And you responded with an outpouring of support. Because of your generosity, we made grants
totaling nearly $200,000 toward the safe reopening of our schools, to the New Albany Food Pantry
and in support of local mental health initiatives. We also introduced our Conversations on Social
Justice with a virtual event featuring Eddie S. Glaude Jr., who chairs the Department of African
American Studies at Princeton University. We all came away from the conversation with a greater
understanding of how to care for each other. Looking back, that’s what this year was all about.
