WHAT IS ETHNOBOTANY?
Ethnobotany is the study of how indigenous people use plants.
Unlike other botanical sciences, ethnobotany’s emphasis is on
traditional usage of plants, both historically and in modern times.
Strengthened by empirical evidence, ethnobotanical research is a
streamlined way of locating plants that offer an added value.
Indigenous people are traditionally recognised for their botanical
solutions to health and beauty concerns. To learn the insights that
have withstood the test of time, Nu Skin® partners with highly

ingredients, Epoch® products respond to specific skin care needs
in a comforting way.
HISTORY
The original force for good campaign was introduced in conjunction with the Nu Skin® Epoch® product line in
1996. This unique brand of skin and hair care products was developed in partnership with highly recognised
ethnobotanists - scientists who study the relationship between plants and indigenous cultures. A donation of
US$0.25 from the sale of each Epoch® product was directed to preserve the environments, languages, lifestyles
and traditions of indigenous people around the world.
To develop the Epoch® product line, Nu Skin® partnered with highly recognised ethnobotanists - scientists
Two years later, Nu Skin® decided to formalise its giving with the creation of the Nu Skin Force for Good

difference for thousands, if not millions of children for generations to come. Throughout the islands of Polynesia and Southeast Asia, Dr. Cox is known as “Nafanua”, one of the
highest chief titles in Samoa. The Samoan people conferred this title upon him in 1989 for his diligence
and work in rain-forest preservation. Known as one of the world’s top ethnobotanists, his relationship
with Nu Skin® has led to the creation of numerous Epoch® products. Dr. Cox is also the founder
and chairman of Seacology, a non-profit environmental organisation that assists in preserving island
rainforests and cultures.
Michael Jeffrey Balick
Providing ethnobotanical expertise, Dr. Balick works with both Nu Skin® and Dr. Cox in the
development of products for the Epoch® product line. He has become a leading figure in the field of
ethnobotany by studying the powerful relationship between plants and people for nearly three decades.

largest and most active programme of its kind in the nation.

PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT FOR
THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD
The Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation® offers continual
support to projects in association with the Seacology foundation.
Through our ongoing association with Dr. Paul Cox, a portion of
proceeds from the sale of Epoch® products he helped develop
goes to Seacology - a non-profit, non-governmental organisation
dedicated to preserving the environment and culture of islands
around the globe and to launching projects that help preserve
island ecosystems and cultures.
Seacology has built schools, hospitals and water supplies for
indigenous peoples on the islands throughout the world, saving
hundreds of thousands of acres of precious rainforest and coral reef
communities. Nu Skin Enterprises has teamed up with Dr. Cox and
Seacology to fund many of these projects.
School of Agriculture for Family
Independence (SAFI)
MTALIMANJA VILLAGE
The Mtalimanja Village is home to SAFI, dedicated in 2007 and is focused on helping the people of Malawi learn better
agricultural techniques to provide for themselves and their families. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world.
The majority of the people are farmers and live on less than one dollar a day.
The Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation®, in partnership with local non-profit organisations and civic groups, built an actual
village in Malawi to house 30-40 farmers and their families while they are taught proper agricultural techniques in areas like
sustainable farming, animal husbandry, drip irrigation..., and to improve their quality of life by becoming self-sufficient. Families
