Session 2 Information
 Sport Education for Intermediates
Sport Education is intended to provide children with a more authentic and enjoyable sport experience than
what we typically see in traditional PE lessons. This session will look at how this curriculum model using the
concepts of seasons, affiliation to a team, formal competition, record keeping, festivity and a culminating event
can achieve the goals of developing competent, literate and enthusiastic players. Sport Education can be used
as an alternative model to deliver PE effectively to senior and intermediate students.
Nikki Johnson, Chairperson Auckland PENZ and Healthy Active Learning Advisor at CLM Community Sport.
Nikki has a teaching background in both primary and secondary teaching for nearly 30 years, here in NZ and
in the UK. She has been involved with PENZ for 16 years of which she has been Auckland PENZ Chairperson
 for the past 6 years.

                                                                              I LR

 Play and Brain Dance
Come and enjoy a safe movement space, moving our bodies to music and with props. This session will provide
examples of how dance can be used as a conduit for play and improvisation and be incorporated into your
 lessons.

                                                                             All DR

 Fakamalohi sino – Village Games
Through village games, we not only acknowledge our diversity and celebrate our pacific culture, but we are
reminded of the purpose of play through interactions, laughter and participation. This is an active session based
on a resource sourced through the community called fakamalohi sino which, in Tonga, loosely means keeping
 fit/movement.
Sarah-lee Oto, Healthy Active Learning Advisor at Sport Waitakere.
Sarah has a teaching background in the primary sector and a passion for connecting culture. Using her own
experiences and love of games she was lead down a road of self-identity. What came from this was Fakamalohi
sino, a village games resource. This was a way to connect, inspire and encourage others who have felt like her,
and what better way than through physical activity.
                                                                             All P G1

 Challenge by Choice
Through adventure based learning (ABL) activities students build trust and extend their confidence. All
activities can be undertaken in a classroom or outdoors, with little or no equipment.

Session 3 Information
Take the plunge – with or without a pool
As one of several contexts for learning in health and physical education (NZC, 2007) aquatic education may, or
may not be given priority in a school, especially if the school does not have a pool. What is possible and why
should we do it? Come along and experience easy to manage and FUN learning possibilities for both in and out
of the water, and to reflect on why aquatics should be an important learning context in every school.
Lynley Stewart, Drowning Prevention Auckland
Lynley has years of teaching experience in primary schools, and in pre-service and in-service teacher
education. In her current position with Drowning Prevention Auckland, she is privileged to be able to support
schools to develop meaningful and sustainable aquatic education

                                                                             All LR

“Let the concept drive the learning” Planning for Quality PE in Primary Schools
When our health and physical education programmes are driven by ‘real world’ concepts, the learning becomes
richer and more meaningful for our students. Join us as we introduce you to a concept driven planning tool we
have used with our primary and intermediate schools as part of the Healthy Active Learning initiative. During
the session you will have the chance to use the planning tool to begin your own concept-first approach to
planning your health and physical education programme.
Greg Burne, Healthy Active Learning Advisor at Sport Auckland and Shanley Joyce, Healthy Active learning
Advisor at Sport Waitakere.
Collectively, Shanley and Greg have over 30 years’ teaching experience in secondary health and physical
education. Their current positions at Sport Auckland and Sport Waitakere see them supporting primary and
intermediate teachers in the planning and delivery of quality health and physical education, sport, play and
physical activity experiences for tamariki.
                                                                             All LT

A speed date with the Health and Physical Education Curriculum
This workshop will take a deep dive into the Health and Physical Education curriculum and look specifically at
ways we can use it to support teaching in physical education. We will expand your knowledge of the underlying
concepts and the role they play in teaching and learning. We will also look at strengthening your understanding
of the strands and achievement objectives in the curriculum and how to best use them when planning physical
education at your school. Join Marisa to break open and refresh what’s inside the curriculum and how you can
use it.
Marisa, PENZ subject advisor - primary and intermediate is an experienced. She is a registered teacher and
skilled facilitator. She works with leaders and teachers to evaluate their current curriculum, planning and
pedagogical practice and identify ways to improve outcomes for learners in physical education.

                                                                             All G1

The new MoveWell resource for teachers
MoveWell is a resource to provide practical ideas, advice and support to those who are involved in helping
develop children’s confidence, knowledge, skills, and attitudes so that they enjoy participating in physical
activity. It combines evidence and research into a practical games-based resource and will have a particular
value for primary teachers through its strong link to the health and physical education learning area in The New
Zealand Curriculum. Hear the writers talk about the resource and how it might be used and have a go to find
out how some of the games can be played. The writers will elaborate on the progressions and pedagogy, the
game skills, and social skills as proposed in the resource.
Alan Ovens, Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education and Wayne Smith, Associate Professor,

Session 5 Information
What is TGfU? How you can use this in your teaching of PE?
“Children learn how to make good decisions by making decisions, not by following directions.” Alfie Kohn. The
pedagogical model of Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) places students in PE situations where they
have to make decisions around the use of physical and tactical skills whilst playing games. This session will look
at the TGfU key concepts and the importance of using effective questioning strategies to support the delivery
of quality PE in your schools.

students? Using Te Whare Tapa Whā model we will learn how hauora can be incorporated into class and how
hauora can be combined with school values. We will also explore practical ways to improve hauora of tamariki.
Participants will be actively involved in fun and learning using games, activities, presentation, and group

Enhancing connections amongst uncertainty
Amongst all the uncertainty, one thing that is certain is that students you build connections with will often have
a more positive learning journey. Teachers may place a lot of focus on building connections early in the year
but how does that continue throughout the year? Deliberately connecting with students throughout the year
can help strengthen relationships with them, particularly when we find ourselves having to teach through a
screen. Come participate in some of my favourite ways to connect with students to build a relationship that will
enhance our learning together.

“Can we play a game Miss?”
“Can we play a game Miss?” This was a popular question from students when we were teaching in schools. In
this session we will look at how we can use the children’s desire to play games to teach the physical and tactical
skills of games through playing small-sided games. In this practical session we will demonstrate the key concepts
of Teaching Games for Understanding as a pedagogical model for you to use in your PE lessons.
