Research Interests
Cosmic Ray Physics and Search for Dark Matter Signatures in the Galaxy
Since 2012, I joined the AMS-02 Milano Bicocca group in the AMS-02 experiment, operating on
the International Space Station (ISS) to study the universe and its origin by searching for antimatter,
Dark Matter (DM) while performing precision measurements of Cosmic Ray (CR) composition and
flux in the range of measured particle energy from GeV up to TeV.
I worked mainly to the scientific data analysis, focusing my activity on the search for possible
anisotropies in the detected primary CR. I contributed to the development of a method for studying
the anisotropy of CR angular distribution, based on the spherical harmonics expansion of the ob-
served sky with respect to the expected isotropic sky. Results for positron anisotropy were published
in Accardo et al. (2014) and an update of the work was recently presented by me at ECRS 2016 on
behalf of the AMS-02 Collaboration.
Moreover, I contributed to the studies related to the back-tracing of CR trajectories in the Earth
magnetic field. These studies are essential not only to correctly reconstruct the CR incoming direc-
tions at the border of the magnetosphere, but also to determine the detailed structure of the rigidity
cut-off maps as function of the ISS positions, needed to select primary CR at lower rigidities. The
internal note Della Torre et al. (2013) reports part of the work that was then included in the official
event selection, as reported e.g. in Aguilar et al. (2015) and following papers.

Cosmic Ray Flux Modulation in the Heliosphere
I contributed to the development of the H EL M OD Model, a Monte Carlo model to simulate the solar
modulation of galactic cosmic rays. In Bobik et al. (2016) I contributed to the progress of both
Forward-in-time and Backward-in-time methods as solutions to the 1D Parker equation, demonstrat-
ing the methods’ equivalence and showing a systematic uncertainty
dark components. A series of papers were published on this topic (G. La Vacca et al. 2009, Kris-
tiansen et al. 2009) and the work presented at international conferences.
Since 2008, I joined the DUNE project, then merged in the larger EUCLID mission, which is
a European Space Agency medium-class mission selected for launch in 2020 within the Cosmic
Vision 2015-2025 program. The main goal of EUCLID is to understand the origin of the accelerated
expansion of the universe. I am partially involved into the EUCLID’s Theory Working Group which
is meant to provide a guide to the scientific themes that will underlie the activity of the group during
the preparation of the EUCLID mission.
In view of the EUCLID measurements of weak gravitational lensing, I also studied the effects of
the non-linearities on the evolution of matter perturbations in CQ models. In particular I contributed
to investigate the impact of non-linear corrections on DE parameter estimation on weak lensing
probes (Casarini et al. (2012)) and how to exploit N-body simulations to assess the bias due to the
use of some standard tools for non-linear corrections to the matter power spectra. These results were
included in the paragraphes 1.8.5 (with relative figures) and 2.7.2 of the review of the science goals
of the EUCLID mission, published in Amendola et al. (2013), with a recent update in 2016.
