2021 GRADUATION CELEBRATION LETTER FROM AN HONORS ALUM Congratulations! Yes, you will hear that word quite a bit, but please celebrate it! You are graduating with Honors and you earned it! This ceremony signifies the final steps of this adventure. You are on to the next. The most exciting thing, even if it also feels slightly terrifying, is WHICH direction your next steps will lead you. It may be working your way higher on the educational ladder, maybe it’s a powerful leap into your career or entrepreneurship, or perhaps you are looking to wander a bit to see what you find and where you go. It can feel bittersweet to move on, but there is so much to look forward to! You will be out from under FGCU’s wings, soaring far and wide on your own currents! Even after I left the nest, I found I still keep the elements of Honors close to my heart. Always continue learning! Education can come in so many forms. These range from travel experiences to books to watching really old cypress trees. Life has its own set of tests for you, so embrace them as a life-long learner! Cultures are the spices of life. There are so many cultures to explore and engage with! Each one gives you a little more flavor of the world. Taste them all! Challenge, grow, and savor your perspectives! Community gives us roots, adding purpose and connection to our lives. These connections have many threads, both socially and spiritually. Whether your community is small or large, it surrounds and supports you. By embracing and engaging with that connection, we reciprocate that support! Leadership will strengthen your opportunities, both with your career and personal achievements. Lead with good intentions and purpose. There is responsibility in leadership, but there is also abundance and success! You are worthy of it! Put everything together and BAM! Personal transformation! Life is one big journey and you’re still in the beginning. Every journey is different, but keeping your mind and your heart open allows you to experience it to the fullest. Good luck with your upcoming adventures! Sincerely, Cecelia Morales FGCU Honors College ‘17

As for the future, I plan to continue advocating for the elderly population. Being their ‘voice’ for these individuals (especially those with Dementia) is something that I truly take to heart. My only wish in life for them is to grant elders to full access to services without any challenges arising along the way. I hope that this comes true someday. Through my endeavors, I have worked to leave a lasting impact at FGCU, such as by being as a tutor for the Hartley Academic Resource Center and volunteering my time at organizations all across Southwest Florida. It was not until attending FGCU that I discovered the field of industrial and organizational psychology, and I now will be pursuing my PhD in that specialization at the University of Oklahoma this fall. I could not be more excited for my future endeavors and to see where the upcoming years will take me! Major: Psychology
Ella Guedouar I originally came to FGCU as an ACE student wanting to go into the field of clinical psychology. In the same year, I was selected to be an Honors Ambassador. I began working as a phlebotomist in a hospital at the beginning of a pandemic and worked full time while maintaining my grades as a full-time student. My ultimate goal is to be a physician assistant and have worked very hard throughout my four years to achieve this goal. Major: Biology Concentration: Pre-Professional Jacob Layton As a result of being homeschooled much of my early education involved firsthand experiences in nature, and in Southwest Florida that meant a lot of time in and around the ocean. Because of how much I love boats, fishing, and nature, I don’t think it came as a surprise to any of my family when I chose Marine Science as my major. Throughout my life I have come across people who looked down on homeschooling as a method of education that would be a detriment to my future, which makes it that much more satisfying graduating with Honors. While at FGCU I have researched Paleotempestology, was mentored by Dr. Joanne Muller and trained as an AAUS scientific SCUBA diver. When I wasn’t studying, I was honing my woodworking and boatbuilding skills by restoring a vintage trawler that I now live on and plan to use to travel the Caribbean. Major: Marine Science Minor: Geology Concentration: Climatology
Rachel Lee Over the past four years at FGCU, I have been able to meet amazing students and staff through the Honors College. I was granted the opportunity to be part of research projects with both Dr. Gregory Boyce and Dr. Peter Reuter. I was able to present these projects at several undergraduate and graduate conferences. I was Runner Up for Best Presentation at Research Day with my co-author Tiffany. In terms of the future, I plan to use my major as a stepping stone to go into the Physician Assistant field. After graduation, I would like to work in Pediatrics since I have a passion for working with children. Major: Clinical Laboratory Science Minor: Chemistry Ryan Luu I became a student at FGCU in Fall 2017 and have truly enjoyed and appreciated my time here as part of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Honors College. My greatest accomplishment here at FGCU would certainly be my presentation at the Research Symposium in Spring 2020; it was a wonderful experience. Moving forward, I wish to pursue a Master’s of Chemistry at the University of San Francisco and attend medical school afterward. Major: Biochemistry
