                                        What is behind the curtain of the Cantor;
what is going on in her kitchen?

When you see me on ZOOM, you see the sanctuary! Behind my background is an entire set-up, that
stays invisible on screen and livestream. It is time to lift the curtain and show you insight in the Cantorial
kitchen! I am sharing with you the most recent set-up at B’nai Jacob. It is not in the sanctuary, but it is in
the Cantor’s office at the synagogue. Every week, Lauren Miller, Leslie Zackin, and I go through a much
appreciated sound check, around 5:30pm on Friday, before the Shabbat Schmooze starts at 6pm. There
were times that the sound delivery was less than optimal; there were times where we virtually high-fived
each other. And, most recently, we have it down pat. The secret sauce has been made. We are worthy of
five Michelin stars! Here are two pictures, one of the Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat set-up and one of the
Shabbat morning set-up. Wonder and marvel with me! Stay safe and healthy. I look forward to being your

This was our most successful Purim ever! We made a profit of over $14,000 for
B'nai Jacob!!! We had 121 full congregation sponsors, 124 extra bags for family
and friends were purchased and shipped, 67 were donated to JFS, and all of our
out of town members had their bags shipped and delivered before Purim.

Assembly and delivery was a little more challenging in this time of COVID, but
we had many volunteers who helped us get the bags to all of you.

         Rachel Korazim
“A Pigeon and a Boy” by Meir Shalev is a story of love during a time of war and bloodshed.
It is a tale of families holding together in spite of rifts and impossible challenges. It is also
an exploration into the true meaning of home and homeland as houses are built and are
falling apart. It has magic and fantasy, all held together by homing pigeons flying only in one
direction- homewards. In our book club we will:
                                   • Explore the art of Shalev’s writing; a contemporary poetic prose rooted in layers of Jewish texts.
                                   • Get to know the historical background of the events.
                                   • Travel in the book’s landscape across Israel.
                                   • Meet amazing men and women – all fictional yet so real.
Rachel is a wonderful teacher. Her presentations, which have graced CBJ before, are filled with
humor, serious knowledge of Israel, an understanding of her Diaspora cousins, and deep, insightful purpose. They are
richly illustrated with pictures and maps. Do not miss this opportunity. The book is available at many online locations.

        Patriotism, Our Most Contested Virtue
        Professor Steven Smith
Prof. Smith, Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science at Yale has written about Spinoza, Lincoln, Leo
Strauss, and Isaiah Berlin. His new book about patriotism came out in February.

The concept of patriotism has fallen on hard times. What was once a value that united Americans has
become so polarizing that it threatens to rip apart the social fabric. On the right, patriotism has become
synonymous with nationalism, while on the left it is seen as an impediment to cosmopolitan globalism. My
purpose is to reclaim patriotism from both of these extremes by showing how it can be an ennobling virtue
that democratic societies cannot afford to do without.

Invisible Years: A Family's Collected Account of Separation and
Survival during the Holocaust in the Netherlands
Presented by author Daphne Geismar and co-presenter Sharon Strauss
The book Invisible Years is an intimate portrait of an extended Jewish family living in the Nazi-occupied
Netherlands who, when faced with imminent deportation, refused to comply. As the Nazis tightened their grip
on the Jewish population, Daphne Geismar’s family was slowly restricted from public life. Sensing the murderous
consequences of deportation, they decided to separate and go into hiding. Through interwoven letters, diaries, and
interviews, Geismar presents the story of nine family members—her parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles—in
their own words, alongside a trove of photographs and artifacts. This family’s detailed account of one of history’s
most horrific chapters challenges us to follow their example of resistance to inhumanity.

Sharon Strauss works as an embryologist in an IVF unit. She makes babies every day. Sharon worked as a
neurosurgical nurse and as a genetic researcher. She served as a commander of the electronic intelligent
course in the IDF Intelligence Corps.

Daphne Geismar designs books on art and history for major museums. Her involvement in publications
that use art and literature to educate began with her thesis at Yale on DIRECTION magazine (1937–1945),
in which artists and writers speak out against fascism. Geismar developed a photography and writing pro-
gram for teenage mothers; and teaches design at universities.
