Welcome to Hastings High School. As parents ourselves, we know how important the
choice of secondary school is and how daunting the transition can seem. That is why, here
at Hastings, we will do everything we can to ensure that your child settles quickly into
secondary education and experiences a seamless and happy transition.
We take pride in our family ethos which is grounded in the strength of relationships
between staff, pupils and parents. We really get to know each and every pupil in our care;
this enables us to provide a high quality education combining excellent academic
standards with a broad curriculum, in a caring and supportive environment.
We work hard to ensure that every pupil makes strong progress and receives the best
possible education. Year on year our results are amongst the best in the county (94% of
pupils achieved level 4+ in English, 88% achieved a 4+ in maths and 83 pupils
achieved at least one 7+ grade) alongside fabulous progress from pupils of all
abilities. Our core values breathe life into everything that we do. As a learning
community we are truly committed to ‘Care and Excellence for All’.
We are extremely proud to be the Co-Headteachers of such an aspirational and successful
school and we fully appreciate the privilege of leading such an exceptional community of
pupils and staff. If you would like to know more, please visit our website or phone to book
a school tour on one of our open days. We all very much look forward to welcoming you to
our school.
With very best wishes

Page 1OUR HASTINGS FAMILY
"We are a family" Pupil quote 2020
Hastings High School opened in 1956 and has become a popular, oversubscribed
community school within Burbage. We are a co-educational Academy, with 830 pupils
between the ages of 11 and 16 years.
When a child starts at Hastings we welcome them into our family, we support them and
challenge them to become the very best that they can be, both academically and
socially. The staff at the school work hard to support our students and one another.
The greatest compliment we have is that staff happily send their own children to the
school and we have several members of staff who not only work at the school, but have
sent their own children to the school and also came to the school themselves.
We work hard to ensure that every child feels
valued. "Pupils are very well cared for and
individuals’ needs are well met." (Ofsted).
In the last few years we have gone through
an age-range change to enable us to teach
our students until they complete their GCSE
exams and our results from the past few
years show an improving trend of
outstanding results. However, there is more
to Hastings than a focus on educational
attainment and excellence. This prospectus
and our online open evening video allow you
to see all aspects of school life here at
Hastings.
Page 2A LEARNING COMMUNITY
"Hastings is an amazing
community of pupils and
teachers who work
together in striving for
excellence"
Pupil Quote 2020
High quality teaching and learning is central to our
mission. One of our most valuable assets is our
talented and dedicated team of highly qualified
teaching and support staff. Our values lead to a
highly productive working environment which
is founded upon mutual respect.
We work hard to develop and maintain excellent
relationships with the families of our pupils to ensure
care and excellence for all.
A typical lesson consists of; a first five minutes
activity that retrieves and tests previous learning, an
oracy opportunity so that every pupil has a chance for
their voice to be heard, challenging activities that are
pitched so that they are 'just right' for each individual
and a chance to improve and correct work in order to
boost progress
Page 3AMBITION FOR ALL
"Hastings have helped me become
ambitious and try harder in lessons.
They have helped me to become more
motivated and want to do better and
succeed" Pupil Quote 2020
Our pupils achieve exceptionally high
results which are “significantly higher than
national averages” (Ofsted) and
demonstrate the continuing high
standards which are being achieved by all
of our children.
Students get opportunities both inside and
outside of the classroom. We don't just
measure success in grades, the personal
progress of all students, is central to what
we do as a school.
We work hard to ensure that all of our
pupils, are prepared for the next stage of
their education when they leave us, be
that at college, through an
apprenticeship or vocational
qualifications.
Page 4DEVELOPING RESPONSIBILITY
"Hastings High School is
education for all.
Provides knowledge for
all. An amazing school
for all"
Pupil Quote 2020
We teach our students how to both behave and
take responsibility for themselves. The behaviour of
our pupils is “outstanding” (Ofsted). New staff and
visitors to the school often comment on how
polite, hardworking and friendly our pupils are,
demonstrating our values in everything that they
do.
We have an active student leadership team led by
two Head pupils, Deputies and the Student
Council with representatives across all year groups.
Pupils have the chance to suggest ideas to improve
the school through regular Butterfly Meetings
where they present their idea to the leadership
team and then are involved in bringing those ideas
to fruition.
Page 5AN ENRICHING CURRICULUM
"Hastings is an amazing school
that has opened up my mind
and taught me things that I
never knew even existed"
Pupil Quote 2020
Great qualifications areimportant but Hastings is about much
more than that. We have an outstanding curriculum which
provides “an extensive extra-curricular programme which
ensures that pupils’ experiences are rich and
varied.” (Ofsted).
We provide many opportunities for pupils to
showcase their talents and try something new. Such as:
Maths Challenge, the Great Debate, STEM
competitions and community events.
Many of our pupils are involved in sports after school.
We offer a wide range of sports such as rugby,
netball, volleyball, rounders, basketball, cricket, football,
rowing, table tennis, hockey and more.
We offer an annual programme of music and drama
performances and would welcome the involvement of
our younger pupils. We have events which include events
such as a “Battle of the Bands”, a Christmas
Concert and an instrumental showcase. We also offer a
full range of 1 to 1 music lessons taught by specialist staff.
We offer a wide variety of extracurricular clubs which
typically include a Drama Club, a Creative Writing Club and
a Lego Club.
We usually offer a wide variety of trips throughout the
curriculum. In the past these have included:
Barcelona
Houses of Parliament
New York
Skiing trip
Page 6SELF DEVELOPMENT
"Hastings' values have shaped how I have
grown as a person"
Pupil Quote 2020
We promote the traditional values of doing
one's best, striving to succeed, the importance of
good behaviour and manners and the need to
show respect for others. "Relationships between
staff and pupils are very positive. Staff are strong
role models.” (Ofsted).
Our Personal Development Programme
revolves around our Hastings CARES Award
which is delivered through Tutor Time,
scheduled Tutor lessons and 6 Personal
Development Days each year. By arranging our
Personal Development curriculum in this way, we
have been able to bring in outside experts to
enrich the curriculum and our own staff have been
able to specialise in their chosen topics.
Topics covered include health & wellbeing, debating
skills, current affairs, careers, relationships
education, first aid and learning to learn.
Page 7OUR CURRICULUM - KEY STAGE 3
Together our goal is for all pupils to leave Hastings
High School well prepared for future success in all
aspects of their lives.
We prioritise the core subjects of maths
and English which are vital for future success.
Pupils are arranged into groups where
appropriate to ensure that the level of
challenge provided is appropriate to the
pupil’s needs. We have high expectations of
the progress that pupils should make and
monitor pupils’ work rigorously to ensure
that all our pupils are challenged and
supported.
Our pupils achieve exceptionally high standards
in academic subjects but we also have a
strong tradition of excellence in practical
subjects. We believe that a balanced
curriculum combines academic,
vocational & practical learning styles.
Over the course of a two-week timetable
pupils will study up to 14 different subjects.
Pupils then choose to specialise in up to 9
subjects during the Options process inYyear 9.
Literacy and Numeracy
Some pupils receive extra literacy and
numeracy support in small groups and
through Teaching Assistants based on their
KS2 scores. During these lessons pupils work
on a variety of activities to support their
needs in terms of basic literacy and numeracy
in close liaison with the English and
maths departments.
We have designated Literacy and Numeracy Co-ordinators who ensure that both literacy and
numeracy is promoted and reinforced throughout the whole school. For example, weekly
competitions and ‘Word of the week’ are communicated via assemblies and the library. Key
Stage 3 pupils all work on numeracy each week.
Page 8OUR CURRICULUM - KEY STAGE 4
Together we can achieve anything.
Academic Results
Our 2018-19 GCSE results were amongst
the best in the county and we expected to
improve even further on these in 2019-20
exams until they were cancelled due to
Covid-19.
We achieve our results through high
quality teaching, a consistent focus on
excellent behaviour and through highly
effective monitoring and support systems. We
have high expectations for all pupils.
We set demanding but achievable
academic targets as pupils work their way
through the school.
Tracking and Reporting
We track pupil progress regularly
and report to parents three times each
academic year. Any pupil identified as
underperforming is then given extra support
to catch up.
Learning Support
Some pupils need extra help to flourish and
we have a team of staff to provide support
to pupils with Special Educational
Needs. Our family ethos enables us
to build excellent relationships with all
pupils in our care enabling the school to
provide the highly individualised
support that pupils deserve.
Careers
We are committed to supporting our
pupils in achieving their career aspirations
in life through links with local
businesses, post 16 education providers
and universities. All students develop a
Careers Progress Portfolio in their time at
the school and complete a period of
Work Experience in Year 10.
