4.FROM THE
GENERAL MANAGER
It’s hard to believe how much has changed in a year’s time–not
just from the perspective of the pandemic, but also with our
construction of the Members’ Clubhouse, etc. At this time a year
ago, we had just started structural steel on the main level and now
we find ourselves only a few weeks away from completion of the
largest capital improvement project in the history of Sawgrass
Country Club. It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come over the
last year!
There’s no doubt that COVID certainly has created change in the
world around us. Change is something that can often create fear
in people. It can feel uncomfortable and, at times, exhausting.
However, change can also teach us new ways of doing business,
which reveals opportunities to learn and grow. That is what you’ve witnessed over the last year from
many of our staff as they constantly juggle to provide exceptional offerings and new ways to deliver an
effective Sawgrass Experience, no matter what challenges they are faced with.
As we now are settling into our new clubhouse environment, we’re working to ensure the staffing and
service of these new areas meets your expectations. Nowhere in our club has the impact been greater
than that of our Human Resources team of Karen Livengood and Sage Bologna. Nonetheless, they
have also risen to the occasion as change has created a way for them to reach more potential
candidates. With the utilization of multiple online platforms such as Zoom and LinkedIn, we have
ultimately expanded our outreach and have been sourcing some amazing talent. The pool of available
talent is changing, and we’re trying to make the most of it.
Chief among these, is a chance to hire talented people at a time when they might have trouble finding
or keeping jobs elsewhere, as many other companies in our area have been forced to let go of staff for
survival. While it’s sad to think of the trauma that many have faced in these uncertain times, it feels so
good to discuss with our new hires how much we care for our members and they care for us. Therefore,
we’re intensely focused on trying to get the right people and provide them the tools and resources to
be successful. This will not only serve our needs for now but will better position us for post-pandemic
recovery and growth as a club.
On behalf of our team, thank you for making Sawgrass an amazing place to work!

16.GOLF
SAWGRASS GOLF ACADEMY Without a doubt, the game is more fun the further you hit it. Swinging hard can get you there on occasion but knowing where to hit the accelerator can get you there consistently. A gain of 5 mph can net us 15 to 20 yards in distance, That’s almost 3 clubs! In the video below, I try to explain where to step on the gas and finish the golf swing! See you around the practice facility!
D.O.G TREATS
As 2020 concluded, I took the opportunity
to reflect on how fortunate we are to be
here at Sawgrass and also how fortunate
we are to enjoy playing the game of golf.
As a PGA Professional one of the areas
that we focus on is creating strategies
and opportunities to introduce the
game of golf to potential future golfers.
Who would have thought that a global
pandemic would have the ability to create
the largest spike in golf participation since
the early 2000’s. In the state of Florida, the
participation rate in the game grew 37% according to statistics provided
by the National Golf Foundation. That increase was more than evident
inside our gates as rounds were just shy of 65,000. With Spring right
around the corner and our tournament season underway, I expect play
to remain consistent. Please follow the basic course etiquette guidelines
and do your part to provide excellent playing conditions for your fellow
members.
With the cooler months behind us, the Sawgrass Golf Academy is excited
to continue providing new clinics and programs to help you improve your
game, keep an eye out for the new Golf Academy website. We are excited
to get our Junior Golf Program back on to our schedule beginning on
Sunday, March 21st. We are planning for a full schedule of Junior Golf
Events, instructional programs and the ever-popular PGA Junior League
season which begins in April. Finally, I am excited to announce that in the
coming weeks you will have the opportunity to experience the Sawgrass
Full Swing Golf simulator. This addition to the clubhouse will serve as
not only an indoor club fitting and golf instruction simulator, but a great
entertainment space for private functions, birthday parties, indoor league
play, and tournament competitions. Just think how nice it will be to play
St. Andrews from the comfort of our clubhouse. Thank you as always,
we are looking forward to a lot of fun and exciting times ahead!
Stefan Brunt, PGA
Director of Golf
19.GOLF SHOP CORNER
This spring, the Sawgrass Golf Shop is excited to
introduce Belyn Key, a sophisticated ladies golf apparel
and lifestyle brand. Also be on the lookout for new
deliveries from Fairway and Green, IBKUL, TAIL, and
a new line from Kathryn Way. In support of local area
merchants, we are now carrying Millie Rose, a golf
towel line made right here in Ponte Vedra Beach. On
the men’s side we are featuring Peter Millar, Dunning,
Holderness & Bourne, Footjoy, and a special Arnold
Palmer Tribute line by Puma which will be worn by
PGA Tour player Rickie Fowler at this year’s Bay Hill
Invitational. Throughout March and April, be on the
lookout for Fitting Days from the top vendors in the
game along with trunk shows and special events. Don’t
forget to follow the Golf Shop Instagram page for new
arrivals and promotions! @shopsawgrasscc

20.TENNIS
TENNIS TIPS
Gday
With the challenges we all faced in 2020, tennis has
shown much strength amid the pandemic with data
showing increased participation, and racquet sales
across the board.
Participation increased 11% in the third quarter of 2020
and a whopping 50% over the third quarter in 2019. This
is all due to the steps that were taken at the beginning
of the pandemic to keep tennis viable and now we are
seeing tennis surging.
Here at Sawgrass, we are off to a flying start to 2021
and our Sawgrass ladies’ teams are entering the
second half of the season and making their run for the
championships. We are competing in A1, A3, B2, C1,
D1, Beaches and First Coast leagues, and are having
some terrific results. At this time, we are in first place
in several divisions and in position to make a run in
several others.
Our Men’s teams are competing in the United States
Tennis Association and First Coast leagues with
distinction coming off a District Championship and
finalist appearance.
We are all looking forward to a great year of tennis here
at our club.
Cheers
Ken Veney
Director of Tennis

27.TRAINER HIGHLIGHT
WELCOME KAILA WRIGHT
Please join us in welcoming
Exercise Specialist, Kaila
Wright, to the Sawgrass
Fitness Center team. Kaila
just moved to Jacksonville
from Orlando. Kaila recently
married in October and
shortly after her husband
accepted a position as a
Clay County firefighter which
prompted their move up north. It has been their desire to
move closer to the beach for quite some time and they took
this as the perfect opportunity to make that happen.
Kaila’s passion for living a healthy lifestyle and pushing
others to be the best versions of themselves influenced
her to pursue a career in the exercise science field. In 2016,
she became a certified 200-hour yoga instructor through
the Yoga Alliance and in 2018, she received her bachelor’s THE IMPORTANCE OF A
degree in exercise science from the University of Central DYNAMIC WARM UP AND
Florida. Kaila’s long-term goal is to become a physical COOL DOWN
therapist that specializes in geriatric care.

Many of us are aware that warming up and cooling down go
along with exercise and sporting activity; however, we don’t
always know how it should be done. Whether you’re playing
golf, tennis, running, lifting weights, biking, or Jazzercising,
a proper warm up and cool down will help you reduce your
risk of injury.
A question we get asked a lot is, is it better to stretch-before
or after activity and for how long?
