           Submitted Grants: Awaiting A decision
              • Gambling Grant: Round 97 $35,000 for air conditioning. Submitted 30/11:
                  Decision April 2019. (Thank you Nora).
              • Building Stronger Communities Grant Program - 2018 - 2019 — BSC18-19053 —
                  Improve Tennis Courts for Community: $53,884 for Tennis Courts Decision
                  Feb/March 2019.
              • Volunteer Grants 2018: New computer and Monitor for the tuckshop and 3 x
                  new branded 3x3 marquees: $4,800 (we may be able to reallocate some of this
                  to required tuckshop facilities).

   10.2    Parent Rep
               • P&C members have been promoting the P&C at the Parent Information night.
               • The TeamApp parent registration going well.
               • Almost all classes have a Parent Representative.

   10.3    School Magazine
           Calling for volunteers as it’s never too early to start. Karen Newton will be the contact
           point this year.

   10.4    Playground Committee
               • Reminder to transfer funds to the Playground Sinking Fund as per the Proposal
                  for Playground Maintenance Policy which was adopted at the 17th April 2019
                  General Meeting.
               • Asking for volunteers to help water the new plants in the junior playground. If

   10.8     Clean Green Team – Refer Attachment 4
            The Clean Green team have been busy collecting eligible containers for the Containers
            for Change scheme. This was kicked off at last year’s Year 6 Graduation and continued
            at the Prep Families BBQ. There will be container collections bins at all school functions
            and the money raised goes to the P&C!

            Additionally, it’s possible for you to take your eligible containers to a collection point
            and nominate the P&C to receive your refund by providing the Scheme ID: C10069947.
            The money will go directly to the P&C to help fund much needed playground
            equipment.

   10.9     Indigo! Fair 2019
            Discussed where Indigo! 2019 could be held this year due to the current building work.
            Grant asked Emily to provide some options and present at the next meeting.

11. Operational Reports
    11.1    Tuckshop
             • New Home Ice Creams are proving very popular. We welcome feedback. There is a
                range of 8 at the moment but this will be cut back to 5 when we see which one the
                kids like. They all are rated amber in smart choices.
             • Flyers have gone out asking for volunteers in the tuckshop.
             • Sales are higher than expected for term 1, some of the increased is over counter
                sales from the new ice creams as well as the increase in school numbers.

12. General Business
    12.1    A few Taringa Road residents attended the meeting to voice their concerns over the
            Taringa Road ‘Stop, Drop and Go’ Redevelopment. They wished to express how very
            disappointed they were with the lack of community consultation. Their perception is
            that the proposed redevelopment will not improve safety and will only push the
            problem further up the road. They believe that improved driver behaviour will greatly
            improve the safety without the need for the redevelopment. Driver behaviour can be
            achieved via infringement notices from the Council or police. They also raised concerns
            about the loss of established trees along Taringa Parade as well as wildlife. One
            resident raised concerns about the impact the redevelopment will have on accessing
            their property.

            Some possible alternatives discussed were changes to the Council bus timetable to
            allow students to arrive at school at more suitable times. Active school travel was also
            discussed.

            Michael Berkman, MP advised that he plans on sending a letter to Council, Cr Julian
            Simmonds & the Lord Mayor to request a pause on the redevelopment so that
            community consultation can occur.

            The ISS P&C reiterated that its main focus is on child safety.

   12.2     The Indooroopilly Scout Group requests an ISS P&C representative to attend the pre-
            lodgement meeting regarding the development application relating to the New Scout
            Hall.
            OPEN ITEM: Sarah or some representative of the IASC subcommittee will be happy to
            attend the meeting. Additionally, when the meeting date is known please notify the ISS
            P&C to see if more representatives are able to attend.

   12.3     An attendee of the meeting raised concerns about pedestrians crossing Finney Road
            and was enquiring if the ISS P&C could lobby Council for a review of pedestrian safety.
            Members of the P&C replied that over the years, Council has been contacted regarding
            pedestrian safety and to date no improvements have been made.
            OPEN ITEM: Grant asked the attendee to speak with him regarding the issues so that
            the ISS P&C can draft some correspondence to the Council.

    12.4    Due to the transition of IASC to the ISS P&C, three new ISS P&C bank accounts are
            required for after school care use. Details of the new bank accounts are as follows:
                • Savings account - Bonds Held (2 to sign)
                • Savings account -Sinking / Future Fund (2 to sign)
                • Debit Card account (1 to sign). Note: This is only a 1 to sign as the only way to
                    transfer money into it is via the 2 to sign account.
            Motion: That the three above-mentioned ISS P&C bank accounts be opened for IASC
            use. The signatories will be:

   12.5     T Ellison conveyed a message that he wished to encourage new members to attend our

Enrolments & School Population
Current Enrolments- 1196 (1108 February 2018)

Class Groupings- 1196 students on “Day 8” in 49 classes.

10 new Prep students out of a total of 172, have enrolled this year as siblings of currently enrolled
“out of catchment” students. Two children of staff (out of catchment) have commenced this year. All
12 students meet the requirements of our Enrolment Management Plan (EMP). This number
constitutes a measurable decrease in “out of catchment” enrolments since 2015. No enrolment
places have been offered to families who do not meet the EMP.

We commenced “Day 8” 2018 with 1099 students in 45 classes.

Finance

Teaching and Learning
Year One
CURRICULUM FOCUS - Students are responding to imaginative stories and making connections
between personal experiences and the text. They are learning to retell events of a familiar story
using text structure and details from a familiar story. The students will use a set criterion to
determine if an imaginative story is entertaining or not.

PEDAGOGY FOCUS – formative assessment in writing is the focus of the teachers in year one. We
will be exploring how to best track the understanding of the students. Using the “bump it up walls”
students and teachers will set learning goals to identify the next step to improve their writing.

Year Two
CURRICULUM FOCUS – Patterns in language. The year two students are currently exploring poetry
and the word and sound patterns authors use to entertain an audience. They are exploring syllables
and rhythms of sounds and words. While helping students to create and enjoy their own poems,
these experiences also support the learning of spelling and grammar in year two.

PEDAGOGY FOCUS – formative assessment in writing is the focus of the teachers in year one. We
will be exploring how to best track the understanding of the students. Using the “bump it up walls”

Music
We welcome Tim Harris as the new Instrumental Music teacher for woodwind, brass and percussion.
A beginner strings’ workshop for Year 3 students was held on 5 February.

The Choral program for Poco (Year 3), Mezzo (Year 4), Regazzo (Year 5/6 boys) and Grande Voices
(Year 5/6 girls) has begun.

Rehearsals and lessons are underway.

ICT
Two trolleys and 34 laptops are being ordered for the Years 3 and 4 classrooms on the oval.

Student Support Services
Student support teams are meeting regularly to design and deliver seamless support systems across
the school for students with a range of learning needs. The team is working to update the model of
support at ISS to ensure teachers know what levels of support are available for each student
depending on their needs.

“Investing for Success” I4S
Four I4S Teacher Aides have started classroom support in week 2. Each Aide works 5 days per week
and provides 3 hours of literacy support for teachers in years 3, 5 and 1. In term two, this support
will be delivered to years 2, 4 and 6.

Their primary focus is to assist teachers to improve reading and writing outcomes for students,
against the Australian Curriculum.

Active School Travel
Whilst our 3 years as part of the Brisbane City’s Council’s AST program has come to an end (we will
re-apply for 2020 at the end of this year), we are still looking to promote active travel, as there will
be complexities around the closure / upgrade of the Taringa Parade zone. Interested Year 6
students will be invited to share their thoughts as to how we can promote and encourage active
travel in the junior and senior school.

School Values
On Friday we had our first Values Parade(s) for the year. As our population has grown so
significantly, we no longer fit into the hall as a whole school. Given we already have a junior and
senior parade, we did not want to go with this format, as we feel it is important to capture the whole
school audience in our Values Parades. We had the A-D draft classes from P-6 come to parade
before morning tea, and the E-H drafts from P-6 come to an encore parade after morning tea. The
feedback was that this seemed to work well; the children seemed calmer and more engaged, and
there was not the issue of the ‘bottlenecks’ we experience when we all mass-exit the hall. The value
that we are really promoting this year is OPTIMISM. We know that there are many challenges with
the school site presently, but we are encouraging all of our students to remain optimistic, and look
forward to what will be a really positive outcome for our students and their families.

Sport
As the dates of the national events have been brought forward, so too have the dates for state,
district and local events. This will mean that Term 1 is very heavily dominated by sporting events
(cross country and athletics) that would normally not take place until Term 2. Based on this, a
decision was made by schools within the WTB / Northern Eagles district to hold off on interschool
sport until Term 2.

Swimming
Given the increase in the number of classes, Miss Capper and Mr Ryan will take two classes at a
time, with additional supervision of a TA, in the pool. This is necessary in order for all classes in
Years 1-6 to access the two, nine week swimming programs (Term 1 & Term 4) that we have become
accustomed to.

Future Problem Solving
- Began 6th February.
- Will be offering an in-class elective for students who attended the National Competition 2018.

Extension Maths Year 5 & 6
- Started Friday 8th February, preparing for the first Maths Tournament at Indooroopilly High school.

B+ to A Program
- 2018 saw an average lift of 38.5% B to A students. (This is up from 30.6% in 2017).
- Year 3 & 5 began Monday 4th February.
- 2019 Program sees Louise co-teaching with teachers twice/term to further enhance the program
impact.

Week 1: Louise modelling co-operative group work in all Year 3 & 5 classrooms based on the
upcoming C2C assessment task (Harnessing power of effective group work and opening up
discussions with teachers on their co-operative learning implementation journey in classrooms in
line with CP & L).

Week 2, 3, 4, 5: Louise working with small groups in English and Maths to empower students to lift
to an A level.

Week 6: Louise co-teaches with classroom teachers, using co-operative group work model the
teachers are comfortable with and focus on building clarity of A rating expectations for the
upcoming English assessment task.

Week 6, 7, 8, 9: Louise working with small groups in English and Maths to empower students to lift
to an A level.

Events and Operations
Student Leaders
Student Leaders will be presented with their badges at an induction ceremony on Wednesday, 13th
February. Invited guests include Cr Julian Simmonds, Tony Ellison to represent the P&C and ISHS
principal Ms Lois O’Reilly. ARD, Mrs Jane Sedgman has sent her apologies.

All Year 6 students will participate in a full day workshop on Tuesday, 12th February ‘Unleashing
Personal Potential’ in order to prepare them for the year ahead as the leaders of our school.
The Student Council voting process (Years 3-6) will begin in Week 6, with the ceremony for
investiture taking place in Week 10.

Outside School Hours Care
The school has been able to provide an additional two rooms to the service. Both are primarily
available for after school care. This will create a further boost above the 250 spaces that are
currently available. 250 spaces for afterschool care were made possible through the opening up of
the library and music room. I have commenced conversations with OSHC coordinator Pam Aird who
expects to be able to bring spaces on line this month.

Parent Information Sessions
Year level parent information sessions are underway. Attendance has been strong across the school.
The Year 5 & 6 Parent Information Evenings will be respectively held on 12th and 13th February.
These sessions will commence at 6:00pm in the hall, with parents then dispersing to classrooms to
hear individual messages and information pertaining to their child’s specific class.
Prep, Years 3 and 4 teachers have held their parent information evenings. Year 1 takes place on 14th
February.

Delivery of Book Packs
A significant number of families took advantage of the opportunity to deliver their students’ book
packs on the Thursday before school started. We received positive feedback from parents who
appreciated getting this task done early, but also some who enjoyed getting to see their child’s
classroom.

Prep Families Barbeque
Over 100 families (400 people) signed up for the Prep families BBQ, held on Sunday 10 February.

Our Facilities
New Build
A number of major projects continue at Indooroopilly State School. Work has commenced on our
new classroom build. It is expected to be completed and handed over at the end of 2019. The
building will contain 15 modern classrooms as well as a large flexible “make-a-space”. Storage is an
extensive feature as are outdoor learning areas. A lift provides disabled access across all four floors
(including the oval) at the rear of the building. The new building will also be connected via covered
walkways to D and F blocks

Taringa Parade “Stop, Drop and Go” Redevelopment
There is commentary taking place both on-line and within the immediate and broader community
regarding the Taringa Parade “Stop, Drop and Go” redevelopment. This project is funded and

delivered by the Brisbane City Council on land not owned by the school. The BCC is also responsible
for the communication, consultation and build delivery processes attached to this project.
To date, the school has used a range of avenues including P&C meetings, School Council Meetings,
Facility Newsletters, the school website and regular weekly newsletters to share and discuss any
information shared by the BCC.

I will continue to share any information that comes to hand. My focus is now on working with my
leadership team, the P&C and the BCC to manage the impact of the zone’s closure during the build,
upon drop off and collection processes. I don’t underestimate the impact of this project but look
forward to a larger, more functional and safer “stop, drop and go” zone that will result from this
short term pain and inconvenience.

The BCC is issuing a letter to all school families and local residents on Tuesday 12 February.
A landscape concept plan has been uploaded to the school website to accompany the
redevelopment plan. Two shelter sheds are part of the plan and this will be helpful for students
during hot or rainy periods.

New Playground
The new playground is being thoroughly enjoyed by students from Prep to Year 2. We have devised
a timetable to allow each of these three year levels time and space to enjoy the playground.

New Outdoor Learning Area
The redevelopment of the sandpit outside Prep A and associated landscaping with new astro turf has
created a very pleasant outside learning environment for the Prep students and teachers to enjoy.

Staffing Update
Tina Solas is currently in an Acting Principal’s position. Wendy Fender is DP K-P, Karen Newton DP 1-
2, Julie Bliss DP 3-4 and Amy Howkins DP 5-6.
Welcome to Ben Ryan, who joins Miss Lulu Capper as part of our HPE team at Indooroopilly. We
also welcome Ms Cecylia Kubicki Garcia and Ms Shannon O’Reilly to the Year 6 teaching team.

Professional Development
Student Free Days: 23, 24, 25 January
Our teachers and teacher aides participated in 3 very full days of professional learning and
preparation for 2019. Dr Ryan Dunn from the University of Melbourne was our guest presenter on
Friday 25 of January and as well as presenting engaging workshops on the topic of Cooperative
Group Work, he also spent time hearing from and reflecting back to teachers about the ways they
utilise ‘inquiry’ as a teaching tool.

Regional Curiosity and Powerful Learning
In 2019, Indooroopilly State School will participate in professional development offered by the CPL
Cluster. This will include: creative and critical thinking, cooperative group work, improving writing,
and instructional rounds at cluster schools.

Curiosity and Powerful Learning –Professional Development Opportunity
On 15 February, 6 staff members will participate in a day of professional learning facilitated by 3
lecturers from Griffith University. The focus of the day will be on developing students’ creative and
critical thinking skills.

Workplace, Health, Safety and Wellness
Teachers have completed All-Staff Mandatory Training and Student Protection. Thirty-two staff
completed First Aid training.

A mindfulness session, facilitated by Manish Singh, was offered to staff during the Student Free
Days. All staff who participated in it said it was exceptionally helpful.

Chaplaincy Report – January 2019

Dear P&C members,

Thank you for your continued support of Chaplaincy at Indooroopilly State School. For those who
may be unaware, the role of a Chaplain is to support students with their social, emotional and
spiritual needs.

Some of the things I do at school include:

      • One to one support – Most of my time is spent here. Sometimes kids just need someone to
          talk to at school. I'm here to support students on a weekly basis, with parent consent, if
          they wish. I can assist with strategies for friendship issues, anxiety, issues at home, family
          illness, etc.
      • Lunchtime activities – My Chappy room is always open during lunchtimes for any kids to
          come and hang out. We have a heap of board games, crafts, and a bunch of other stuff for
          them to do. We aim for the community in that room to be as welcoming and inclusive as
          possible. I’m also regularly out in the playground, running games down on the oval for the
          kids at second break on Wednesdays – which also focused on inclusion and is a great
          place for kids who perhaps struggle at break times and or need somewhere to chill out.
      • Classroom visits – I’m around to support students in the classroom as well, which can be
          quite flexible. If a particular student is struggling or needs assistance I help them with
          their work in any way the teacher requests.
      • Family support - I don’t run the Chaplaincy service alone! I have some amazing volunteers
          and church support that I can call on when I need it. Please let me know if you have a
          parent or family with an illness, going through hard times, etc. My church can help by
          providing meals, counselling, pastoral care, youth services, etc.

I look forward to another fantastic year ahead!

Swim Club Report – January 2019
Coaches report – Indooroopilly swim club

Learn to swim:
We have added extra classes this term and great to see they are filling up.

Squads:
The numbers have dropped a little as year 12 kids have moved on to another school. We have had
several new kids join the program from outside the school or new arrivals at Indooroopilly School.

As we build the learn to swim program we will start to see the natural progression through the
squads as this will take another 12 months before we see the results of this.

Coaches:
Looking to add another teacher for the learn to swim program as numbers increase.

Competition:
The club nights restart on February 8th.

Administration:
Purchased Learn to swim benches for the extra classes which are proving a great help for the
teachers in the learn to swim and stroke correction classes.

The holiday program was a great success with lots of kids attending.

Very happy with the build-up of numbers through the whole program. Coaches and teacher have
performed very well and looking forward to next year.
