Smart Scaling: Using the Staged Approach to Ultrasonic and
GENERAL SESSION
Hand Instrumentation to Achieve Better Clinical Outcomes
Joy Void-Holmes, DHSc, BSDH, RDH
OBJECTIVES:
• Discuss current research that supports a staged approach to periodontal
debridement
• Recognize the importance of cementum preservation
• Review the proper foundational skills in ultrasonic technique and hand
instrumentation
• Discuss variables that influence deposit removal using MUI technology
Commercially Supported by: • Examine current trends in sharp-free technology
• Assemble hygiene setups that facilitate thorough removal of deposits with fewer
instruments
The ultimate goal of manual and ultrasonic instrumentation (MUI) is to eliminate
pathogenic bacteria and remove biofilm and calculus deposits while preserving
tooth structure. The approach used to achieve this goal is inherently different based
EXHIBITION
on the design of the instrument, sequence of use, and the technique utilized by the
clinician. This course examines the staged approach of MUI. Clinicians will learn how to
effectively maximize ultrasonic instrumentation through technique and tip selection in
order to minimize hand instrumentation and create an environment that encourages
tissue health through the staged approach. Imagery and hands-on demonstrations
will be provided. A review of ultrasonic inserts and hand instruments with sharp-free
technology will be applied to help attendees create periodontal debridement setups
that require fewer instruments.

GENERAL SESSION The Threat of Periodontal Disease in Pregnancy
Casey Hein, MBA, BSDH, RDH
OBJECTIVES:
• Describe the evidence supporting a relationship between periodontal disease
and adverse pregnancy
• Identify the risk factors preterm birth and preeclampsia
• Express patient-appropriate messages to educate women of child-bearing age
about the importance of oral health and the potential impact of periodontal
disease on pregnancy
Commercially Supported by:
It is widely recognized that infection and inflammation are associated with a significant
proportion of adverse pregnancy outcomes, and one of the most common sources
of infection and inflammation is periodontitis. It’s been estimated that periodontal
diseases, including gingivitis, affect 75% of pregnant women. Periodontal infection has
been correlated with pregnancy complications such as preterm birth, preeclampsia,
gestational diabetes, and delivery of small-for-gestational-age babies. Oral health
care providers who see women of childbearing age should be aware of the evidence
that supports the possibility that periodontal infection may be a modifiable risk factor
for adverse pregnancy outcomes. This case-based course empowers oral health care

Arginine, Hydrogen Peroxide, and Water: Magical Weapons in
WORKSHOP
the War Against Oral Dysbiosis Disease
Anne Guignon, MPH, RDH, CSP
OBJECTIVES:
• Recognize why most oral diseases are dysbiotic conditions
• Understand the nuts and bolts of arginine bicarbonate and how it creates a healthy
microbial community
• Appreciate how hydrogen peroxide supports a healthy subgingival microbiome
• Discover the role of fluid dynamics in daily debridement
• Learn how to prevent or reverse oral disease by establishing and maintaining
Commercially Supported by: homeostasis
Dysbiosis is a new way to describe the etiology of oral conditions like caries,
periodontitis, gingivitis, and candidiasis. For decades dental professionals have relied
on fluoride, brushing, and traditional flossing to prevent, control, or reverse caries,
periodontal disease, and dentinal hypersensitivity. While these approaches have merit,
EXHIBITION
research is now showing that there are other chemical and mechanical pathways to
disrupt biofilm, restore pH levels to a healthy balance, and create homeostasis where
healthy microbes proliferate, and pathogens can’t survive. This course provides a
fresh look at how dental professionals can move beyond more traditional disease
recommendations by understanding the chemical power of arginine bicarbonate
products, the benefits of prescription tray therapy using hydrogen peroxide gel, and the
biofilm disruption potential of water via fluid dynamics. Learn to translate science into
real-world options that result in positive health outcomes.

Long-Term Maintenance
Tanya Dunlap, PhD
OBJECTIVES:
• Discover the benefits and limitations of antimicrobial and mechanical therapies
for biofilm control
• Understand how and why antimicrobials with oxidative/reduction reactions
effectively manage biofilms
• Learn how to incorporate localized antibiofilm therapies into existing treatment
plans
Commercially Supported by: • Discover how to help preserve the health of your implant, cosmetic, and
restorative cases
Biofilms in periodontal pockets regenerate quickly after scaling. Adjunctive therapies,
such as antibiotics, have a temporary antimicrobial effect. You can treat your patients
more effectively with long-term success using prescription-tray delivery of hydrogen
peroxide gel deep into periodontal pockets. Research shows that this delivery
combined with SRP leads to more significant pocket depth and bleeding reductions
than SRP alone. Attend this presentation to review data on microbial changes during
treatment and the science behind the tray delivery and its practical implementation.

Help People Switch Back to Nasal Breathing
Trisha O’Hehir, RDH, MS
OBJECTIVES:
• Understand physiologic differences between nasal breathing and mouth breathing
• List the signs and symptoms of mouth breathing
• Recognize oral and facial changes associated with mouth breathing
• Describe the link between mouth breathing, sleep, and human growth hormone
• Make the connection between mouth breathing and the airway
Commercially Supported by: Humans are designed to be nose breathers, but somewhere along the way, nose
breathing can change to mouth breathing and reduced oxygen absorption.
Adequate oxygen levels lead to regenerative sleep and the release of human growth
hormone. Mouth breathing leads to lower oxygen absorption levels, poor sleep, and
misdiagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Normal
nasal breathing involves the tongue being up, teeth apart, and lips together. In
children, keeping the tongue up during rest and swallowing provides the necessary
EXHIBITION
stimulus for adequate palatal development. The tongue position associated with
mouth breathing leads to compromised jaw development and a restricted airway.
Mouth breathing is a predictor of sleep apnea, long face syndrome, and other
developmental and sleep-related problems.

Us Vs. Them!
Jeff Havens
OBJECTIVES:
• Learn to replace the complicated four-generation model with a workable
dichotomy between older, more experienced workers and their younger, less-
experienced counterparts
• Understand the key cultural, technological, and social changes that have
conspired to create a disconnect between team members from these two
generations

eliminate problems caused by the disconnect mentioned above
• Inspire a healthier, more robust work ethic in your younger employees (and your
older ones, too) Inspire a healthier, more robust attitude toward change in your
older employees (and your younger ones, too)
If you’ve listened to any other discussion about generational issues at work, then you’ve
undoubtedly been told there are four distinct generations operating side-by-side in
today’s working world. You’ve then been told the differences between those four
CONFERENCE
generations, and then you’ve been told (although probably not in these exact words)
that you need to just deal with all these different people, because they’re not going away
and they’re not going to change how they operate. If that advice suits you, fantastic.
However, if you’ve ever been frustrated by how impossible it seems to employ four
different strategies to manage four distinct generations, and if you’ve ever felt like
you’re the only one who’s being asked to make any changes, then Us Vs. Them is
exactly what you need. Because it turns out that there really aren’t four generations. In
this hysterical keynote, you’ll learn a simpler way of looking at your own generational
picture, and you’ll also learn how to understand, recognize, and resolve every
generational issue facing today’s workforce. That’s no exaggeration; by the end of Us
Vs. Them, you and your colleagues will walk away with all of the knowledge you’ll need
to address 100% of the generational issues you’ll face for the rest of your career. Other
generational presentations focus on what people want, but Us Vs. Them will tell you
why everyone wants the different things they do. It’s an important distinction, and it
will make implementing new solutions easier than you ever thought possible.
So get ready to laugh more and learn more than you ever thought possible. Because
improving your generational issues doesn’t have to be boring.
