The Mission of the Institute for Women’s Leadership
The m is s ion of the Ins titute for Wom e n’s Le ade rs hip at Marque tte Unive rs ity is to advance
w om e n’s le ade rs hip locally and globally through pione e ring re s e arch, innovative
program m ing, and collaborative e ngage m e nt.

One com pone nt of the Ins titute for Wom e n’s Le ade rs hip’s activitie s is to cre ate an
inte rdis ciplinary and vibrant re s e arch e nvironm e nt that e quitably and inclus ive ly s upports
faculty and s tude nts as the y e ngage in impactful, trans form ative s cholars hip on ge nde r/s e x.

Goals of the Interdisciplinary Summer Grant Program
The goals of the Ins titute for Wom e n’s Le ade rs hip inte rdis ciplinary grant program are to
fos te r inte rdis ciplinary re s e arch collaborations acros s the Marque tte Unive rs ity com m unity
that furthe r our unde rs tanding of ge nde r and s e x acros s the full range of hum an affairs , and
to s tim ulate the de ve lopm e nt of s uch re s e arch into large r e xtram urally funde d proje cts .
The s tudy of both the pe rs onal and s ocial cons truct of ge nde r, as w e ll as biological
conce ptions of s e x, s pans m any dis cipline s . The s e dis cipline s have the ir ow n inte lle ctual and
the ore tical roots , his torie s , m e thodologie s , and approache s to unde rs tanding ge nde r and
s e x. It is als o re cognize d that ge nde r and s e x inte rs e ct w ith race , e thnicity, s ocioe conom ic
s tatus , s e xual orie ntation, and othe r s ocial cate gorie s . Inte rdis ciplinary re s e arch that
com bine s the pe rs pe ctive s from tw o or m ore dis cipline s has the pote ntial to produce
im pactful, trans form ative re s e arch and le ad to e xtram ural funding.

Guidelines and Eligibility
The Inte rdis ciplinary Sum m e r Grant Program w ill s upport high quality, inte rdis ciplinary
re s e arch proje cts involving collaborators from tw o or m ore dis ciplinary backgrounds or
traditions that advance our unde rs tanding of ge nde r and/or s e x in any dom ain of hum an
e nde avor and s how prom is e of re ce iving e xtram ural funding (e .g. , a Philos ophy re s e arche r
and a Nurs ing re s e arche r collaborating; or an Englis h Language re s e arche r collaborating w ith
a Bus ine s s Ethics re s e arche r and a Biology re s e arche r; or four re s e arche rs from thre e
diffe re nt fie lds ). Proje cts m ay be dire cte d tow ard the gathe ring of prim ary data, the
application of innovative approache s and analys e s to provide nove l ins ights from e xis ting
data, or cre ative e nde avors that s tim ulate or s tre ngthe n com pe titive e xtram ural grant
applications . Funds w ill be aw arde d for one ye ar and are nonre ne w able .

Eligibility
         • The principal inve s tigator(s ) m us t hold a faculty or s taff appointm e nt at Marque tte
            Unive rs ity.
         • Re cipie nts of the aw ard are e xpe cte d to be e m ploye d at Marque tte Unive rs ity
            during the duration of the ir proje ct and w ill be re turning for the ne xt acade m ic ye ar
            (2022-2023).
         • Proje cts that include tw o or m ore inte rnal or e xte rnal collaborators that re pre s e nt
            dive rs e dis ciplinary backgrounds that diffe r from e ach othe r w ill be give n priority.
            Exce ptional proje cts on ge nde r/s e x that do not m e e t inte rdis ciplinary qualifications
            w ill be cons ide re d if s ufficie nt funds are available .
         • Re cipie nts of the aw ard m us t m e e t w ith a te am from the Ins titute for Wom e n’s
            Le ade rs hip and Office of Re s e arch and Spons ore d Program s to e xplore the
            s us tainability of the ir re s e arch w ithin 12 m onths of re ce iving the funds .
         • Re cipie nts w ill be e xpe cte d to give a talk on the ir re s e arch at an Ins titute for
            Wom e n’s Le ade rs hip e ve nt.
         • All pre s e ntations and publications ne e d to note IWL as a funding s pons or.
         • If an Inte rdis ciplinary Sum m e r Grant w as re ce ive d pre vious ly, a lis ting of re late d
            activitie s and s cholarly output m us t be s ubm itte d w ith the ne w grant propos al.
            Spe cifically, re port on any publications , pre s e ntations (i.e ., acade m ic confe re nce ,
            invite d, de partm e ntal s e m inar e tc.), or re late d e xte rnal grant s ubm is s ions that
            re s ulte d from the prior IWL grant. Prior grant outcom e s w ill be cons ide re d whe n
            aw arding s ubs e que nt grants .

Budget
Te am s can as k up to $11,000 for faculty s um m e r s tipe nds and up to $6000 for re s e arch
cos ts (e .g., s upplie s or s e rvice s , s tude nt as s is tants , trave l). Max re w ards for e ach proje ct
w ill be $17,000. Exce ptional propos als w ith highe r de m and m ay be cons ide re d. Final aw ards
are de pe nde nt on availability of funds .
