Come celebrate Juneteenth with us! This year marks our 20th Juneteenth celebration;
the NBMAA started celebrating in 2001 and, excluding a short hiatus, has marked the
holiday every year since! This year, we are returning to the celebration with renewed
enthusiasm! With the help of our Local Advisory Committee, we have big plans for
Juneteenth and we are asking for your help to see them through. The day begins on
Saturday, June 19, at 11 a.m. with a flag-raising and the Black National Anthem—to be
performed by Aleecya Foreman. There will be drumming, dance, and poetry
performances throughout the day. There will also be local food vendors, and we
encourage you to enjoy a picnic in Walnut Hill Park. NBMAA art activities will be
available for children and families. Community organizations and vendors will be
present to share about their mission and how you can get involved in the community.
The celebration will end at 4 p.m. We encourage you to show off your own heritage and
wear cultural clothing! Due to COVID restrictions, limited space is available, so please
register ahead of time (registration is free). We also require masks to be worn and social
distancing to be observed. We will be following current COVID guidelines so that this
day will be fun and safe for all.

Juneteenth is celebrated each year on June 19th to commemorate the freeing of more
than 250,000 enslaved black people in Galveston Bay, Texas. Although the
Emancipation Proclamation had technically gone into effect on January 1, 1863, it took
over two years for news to reach the farthest communities. Union soldiers, many of
whom were black, travelled to plantations and cities across the south to bring news of
freedom to the people enslaved in Confederate States. It was not until February 1, 1865
that the Thirteenth Amendment, abolishing slavery in the Constitution, was ratified by
President Abraham Lincoln.

Juneteenth was first celebrated in Texas on June 19, 1866 and has been celebrated across
the United States since. Historically, celebrations have been community-wide events,
bringing people together to share a joyous experience with food, song, and dance.

TOWN OF WEST HARTFORD- June 19 and June 20, 2021

The Town of West Hartford and its community partners will kick off Juneteenth 2021
with the Witness Stones Project dedication honoring the black lives who were enslaved
in our community and shining the light on their stories.

Then you will want to grab your blanket, chairs and sunscreen because
the celebration will begin at noon with a community Picnic (BYOP) on the Town Hall
Green while being entertained by traditional A
frican dancers and drummers and DJ B-Ez spinning a block party mix. To top it off
there will be amazing performances by our talented youth and some surprise guests.
We will also have health & wellness partners and local business tents to visit.

As the day progresses we will move the celebration over to Blue Back Square for the
unveiling of our Martin Luther King Jr. inspired mural created by Corey Pane and other
local artists. The mural, a RiseUp Project in collaboration with the Town of West
Hartford, Concerned Parents of Color of West Hartford and WHAASCO will pay
tribute to our West Hartford black history and individuals in our community who have
lived up to Dr. King's dream and inspired us all to through storytelling, activism and
leadership.

And finally to capture the spirit of Juneteenth weekend, the First Church, West
Hartford invites the community to join them on Sunday June 20, 2021 for an inspiring
sermon based on the 1812 sermon by First Church's third minister, the Rev. Nathan
Perkins' widely published "Fast Sermon" on the "National Sins" of our young country:
the legacy of slavery, guns, and addictions."

After the service First Church, Concerned Parents of Color of West Hartford, the Unity
Green Committee and the Town of West Hartford welcome you to celebrate the newly
renamed Unity Green as we cut the ties of bondage and celebrate Unity and Freedom.

Join us as we celebrate Juneteenth. We travel to New Haven Connecticut where we will
honor the day with the local community while we enjoy some time away from the 5
Boroughs and check out New Haven and points north.

On June 19, 1865, the announcement was made that tens of thousands of African-
Americans in Texas had been emancipated, closing the door on one of the last chapters
of slavery in the U.S.

Today, June 19, is celebrated as “Juneteenth,” in honor of one of the final acts of
emancipation of slaves in the U.S.

This year’s celebration is taking on special meaning as efforts are underway to make the
day a federal holiday.

This is a new ride that is being scouted by Allan on 4/16 so check back for details.
Surprised to see New Haven as a place with African American History? There are quite
a few places to ride with sights to see. The amazing thing about this country, is how
much of it is intertwined and exists because of African American history - much of it,
painful and horrible - but so much of it also worthy of celebration and hopefully a much
brighter future to look forward to. Join us for a respectful honoring of the past along
with a joyful celebration of the culture.

This will be MODERATE RIDE in the front and the back will accommodate a Happy
Face pace BUT PLEASE BE ABLE TO KEEP NO LESS THAN 10MPH IN THE BACK.
PLEASE ALSO BE COMFORTABLE RIDING ON BUSY STREETS , THERE ARE A
FEW. All club rules apply and the start location will be emailed to the first 15
registrants. Location will be in the vicinity of New Haven Union Station.

Please bring all the usual bike stuff: LIGHTS, SPARE TUBE, HYDRATION, HELMET,
MASK AND SANITIZER. ALSO, PLEASE DRESS FOR THE SEASON. ALWAYS
CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR ANY CANCELLATIONS / UPDATES THE NIGHT
BEFORE OR EARLY MORNING OF, BUT JUNE IS THE LOVLIEST MONTH IN NY
AND WE SHOULD HAVE AMAZING WEATHER. PERFECT FOR A GETAWAY OUT

Storytelling workshop, live readings from the Oliver Ellsworth “I Am Me” project,
