Legends of Drag
ABOUT THE
PROJECT
T he queens who carry the history of drag before it was
cool are becoming rare creatures. Legends of Drag, a
forthcoming photo book by Harry James Hanson and Devin
Antheus, will document these queer elders who have long been
cultural and spiritual leaders within their communities.
Over the past three years, we have photographed 45 drag elders
in 13 cities, each styled with a custom floral arrangement. The
initial four portraits were executive produced by Sasha Velour,
winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9.
Those portraits and an accompanying essay were published
on Vogue in April 2019, and eight more portraits debuted on
Harper’s Bazaar in June 2020.

About the Project
In January 2021, we signed with Abrams Books to publish
Legends of Drag as an art book. With an October 2021
deadline, we now have less than a year to produce the
remaining portraits. Our aim is to expand this historic
work to include 36 more queens in six more cities
across the country. Legends of Drag will be an essential
contribution to the queer archive, and the first photo
book of its kind. We are seeking community support and
continued funding to complete the project.
Lady Red Couture Legends of Drag is
slated for a spring 2022
Los Angeles
release.

WHY
SUPPORT
M ainstream drag’s preoccupation with youth culture rarely creates
space for elder queens, despite their fundamental role in securing
rights for today’s queer youth, and in shifting the broader societal
conversation surrounding gender.
As millennial queers, we inherit the loss of an entire generation to Carla Gay
San Fransisco
AIDS. The magnitude of that loss informs our commitment to fostering
intergenerational exchange through the creation and publication of this
series. As we find ourselves in the midst of a global pandemic, the elders who
lived through the AIDS crisis have a tremendous amount of wisdom to share.
It is imperative to document the queens who are not on television,
the unsung heroes of local dives, the performers who have championed their
art form for decades, even when it meant risking their safety. The portraits
serve to honor the legacy of these queens as survivors, trailblazers, and
cultural ambassadors.
