                     AU Club
       Loughborough Students Cycling Club
1. Athletic Union Cycling Club

All students must join the Loughborough athletic union and purchase Loughborough Students Cycling
Club membership at the start of the academic term to be considered for a place on any cycling squad.
The AU club is open to everyone of any discipline and ability.

There are three regular training opportunities per week for road and mountain bike (Wednesday
afternoon and weekends), and regular informal rides. Club sessions are led by an experienced member
and route, distance and times are posted on the Facebook page. There are club trips, track taster
sessions at Derby velodrome and social events throughout the year.

For information about the AU club visit the AU bazaar in the first week of term.

    2. Development Squads
Endurance

The development squad provides a bridge between the AU club and the cycling academy squad. There
are 2 levels of support provided within the squad:

Development (Bronze):

    • Individualised 1:1 coaching and training plans - delivered through our cycling coaches and in
        partnership with our cyclinganalytics.com platform.
    • Invited to specific training days and/or events with the LCA squads and will also be considered
        in selection for BUCS events.

Development

    • Access to generic training and gym plans
    • Skills, maintenance and training workshops and seminars
    • Coaching support

Bronze riders will need to apply for a place on the performance program and undertake laboratory
trials to gain selection. Otherwise development applications will be made via the AU club development
captain at the start of term (October).

For more information, please contact the development captain Max Holgate M.Holgate-
18@student.lboro.ac.uk.

DH MTB
    • 2-3 weekly rides led by the downhill captain, including local trails/jumps.
    • Wattbike group training sessions
    • Group S&C training sessions
    • Trips/uplift days
3. Loughborough Cycling Academy
Endurance and sprint squads each have 2 tiers, gold and silver. Gold riders receive more individualised
access, while silver riders benefit from group workshops and seminars. A brief overview can be seen
in part 5 (summary of offers).

Whilst we encourage riders to race for Loughborough Students Cycling Club as their 1st claim team,
this is not a requirement to be on the academy and riders are permitted to race for different teams.
However, all riders are expected to commit to racing at BUCS events unless prior authorisation is
granted from the programme manager due to clashes with international level competition.

        • Individualised 1:1 coaching and training plans - delivered through our cycling coaches and
in partnership with our cyclinganalytics.com platform.
        • Strength and conditioning - discounted powerbase gym membership, including elite
hours. 2-3 dedicated weekly squad training with our S&C coach, and individualised S&C
            training plans.
        • Aerodynamics optimisation – potential for wind tunnel testing. We also collaborate with
the school of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering and are looking to undertake in
            house aerodynamic testing.
        • Sport science support – as well as our dedicated cycling physiologist we also collaborate
with the school of sport exercise and health sciences. We are able to offer un-paralleled
access to sport science support, for example: performance testing, lactate threshold
assessments, altitude and heat training, and novel training interventions.
        • Sport nutrition – we have a dedicated sport nutritionist working with the team providing
group seminars and working individually with riders, including nutrition plans and body
            composition assessments.
        • Physiotherapy – access to team physio for injured riders as well as dedicated pre-hab and
            re-hab plans for the team.
        • We regularly book private sessions at Derby velodrome, for specific track training
            coaching sessions

Downhill MTB

Downhill mountain bikers competing at national level or higher interested in joining the team should
contact the program manager for an informal discussion and will be eligible for LCA gold or silver level
support, appropriate to their specific needs.

    4. ParaCycling
Para cyclists interested in joining the team should contact the program manager for an informal
discussion around your current performance level, training history and individual specific needs within
the training programme. This will assist us in giving you the best possible advice and information as to
where you might be best suited within the squad structure here at Loughborough.

More information on Loughborough’s Para Sport programmes can be found here:
https://www.lboro.ac.uk/sport/para-sport/

For the academy we would expect you to have:

4.1 A UCI Para Cycling International Classification (or plans to obtain one)

4.2 Competition experience in road, time trial or track

6. Selection Process
Applications to join the development and cycling academy open on the 13th August 2020 via a form
on the website https://www.lboro.ac.uk/sport/sports/cycling/performance/. Those short-listed will
be invited to a selection laboratory trial at the university campus in September (date TBD).

The below provides a guide to our selection criteria for the squads, and places are allocated through
the level downwards until all available positions are filled in each squad. Meeting any of the following
criteria does not automatically guarantee a place on any squad, and all are subject to completing trials.
Candidates will also be judged on their attitudes, behaviours and commitment.

7. General Conditions
All selections are subject to available places on teams and where necessary will be prioritised at the
discretion of the cycling programme manager in conjunction with the coaching team. All athletes must
agree to and sign the Loughborough University Performance Athlete Agreement, which governs your
engagement in the cycling programme for the 2020/2021 season. Returning athletes must have
demonstrated that they have met the programme commitment and athlete management
requirements outlined below. All cyclists will be placed into squads by the second week of Autumn
term (October).

7.1 Make a full commitment to all aspects of the Loughborough University Cycling programme.
7.2 Understanding that being part of the programme is a privilege and not a right.
7.3 Fully support and contribute to the positive ethos and image of the Loughborough University
        cycling programme.
7.4 Taking responsibility for your own athletic development and performance, academic
        commitments/deadlines and performance lifestyle.
7.5 Always displaying a positive attitude, challenging yourself to operate outside your comfort
zone, valuing excellence, being punctual and actively seeking and giving constructive
        feedback.

Failure to meet any of the above may result in a cyclist being removed from their squad and/or asked
to leave the programme. Returning athletes should not automatically expect to be in the same squad
as in previous seasons. The dynamic nature of Loughborough cycling requires us to balance the squads
each season in order to meet the aims of the programme. The cycling programme manager reserves
the right to allocate “wildcard” places on the team to athletes that fall outside the aforementioned
criteria. This may include, but is not limited to, athletes that have potential future success in
BUCS/international cycling, contribute to the overall goals of the programme and/or demonstrate the
qualities required to be a positive member of the Loughborough University cycling team.
