Media Release

Triple Platinum and a perfect score for De Krans at 2019 SAWi Ratings
Reaffirming its position as one of South Africa’s premium port producers, De Krans Wine Cellar in Calitzdorp has
scored 90+ for three of its products in the 2019 South African Wine Index (SAWi) ratings. The Cape Vintage Reserve
scored a perfect 100 points, followed suit by the Cape Tawny Ltd Release (96,5) and 2017 Touriga Nacional (94,8).

The SAWi was established in 2009 with the aim of independently identifying South Africa’s best wines. The
competition’s unique ‘Algorithm of Excellence’ is applied to measure the performance of individual wines, across
multiple vintages, and compares and condenses the results from more than 100 multinational competitions, reviews
and listings, acknowledging the nature of the competition and any additional accolades bestowed on a wine, and
expresses this as a single value out of 100.

Drawing on the collective wisdom of industry experts and prominent role players, without fear of being tainted by
personal preference, SAWi scores offer wine lovers an accurate measure of wine quality consistency that stretches
back between three and ten years.

The Touriga Nacional is produced from grapes grown on the farm and aged in French oak barrels for 12 months. A
deep dark colour the wine displays intense fruit flavours of blackberries, violets and spice. Winemaker Louis van der
Riet recommends serving this award-winning wine with a succulent ostrich fillet or any other game dish. The 2017 De
Krans Touriga Nacional retails for approximately R135 per bottle.
Produced from several Portuguese varieties, and aged in oak for 22 months before bottling, the Cape Vintage
Reserve, according to Louis will reach its optimal drinking potential if left to age for a further 20 to 30 years. The port
is dark deep red and displays a beautiful aromatic nose of violets, red berries, vanilla and dark chocolate. On the palate,
you’ll be met with alluring red fruits, dried prunes and cocoa flavours. Enjoy on its own during the colder months or
serve with baked desserts or combine with a sauce to serve with your chosen dessert. Best enjoyed with matured
cheeses as well, and retails for approximately R375 per bottle
Not forgetting the Cape Tawny Ltd Release, which Louis describes as being a magnificent orange sapphire colour
with delicious aromas of orange peel, caramel, nuts and toffee. These flavours carry through to the palate with the
added surprise of fruitcake flavours. The perfect port to enjoy on its own during the cold winter months or the paired
with a delicious home baked winter pudding. Stock up on this winter winner, which retails for approximately R235 per
bottle

Baldwin family
(Diè eiland was Britse gebied en bekend as die loneliest island in the
world).
Sy sterf in Ladismith tydens ‘n besoek daar, maar is by haar man in
In 1857, at the age of 6 or 7, Happy together with her parents, arrived in S.A from Tristan da Cunha on board the HMS
Geyser, which had been sent by Governor Sir George Grey to fetch the islanders who wanted to leave. This has been
decided after rumours of famine and misery on the island, as well as the Bishop of Cape Town’s report on the
desperate conditions prevailing when he visited there in 1856. (At the time the island was British territory and known
as the loneliest island in the world). A group of 45 people decided to leave, a large number of whom settled in
Riversdale and Mosselbay. There is a strong possibility that Happy and her family were amongst this group. Later she
married John Baldwin (by proxy), and she greatly inspired and motivated the local English community here in
Calitzdorp. It is mainly due to her zeal that the St.Mark’s Chapel in Queens Street was built. She and two of her
daughters, Fanny and Mary, were dressmakers - their speciality being wedding- dresses – and the big mirror,
elsewhere in the museum, was used in their trade. In 1901, Happy and members of her family were restricted by
martial law, probably for sympathising with the Boer Republics. She passed away during a visit to Ladismith, but is
buried with her husband in Calitzdorp’s old English cemetary. Up to this day the Baldwins are remembered with
compassion.

Fanny Mary Baldwin (1875 - ?)
Fanny was die oudste van die vyf Baldwin kinders en het nooit getrou nie, hoewel sy verloof was. Volgens oorlewing
altyd vol grappe. Sy was die baaskleremaakster.
Fanny was the oldest of the five Baldwin children and although she was engaged, she never married. Her fiancé died in
a freak accident while horse -riding when the horse was startled by something and the rider could not free himself from
the stirrups. Fanny is remembered as a slender, spruce and amusing little woman, often wearing black with high heel
shoes and a small hat. She was the master dressmaker.

TEAM VAN ASPRIS maak Calitzdorpers trots
Klein Karoo Klanke produksie in 2009.
Twee dae later, wen hul die cluster talent kompetisie in Calitzdorp “So you think
you can dance”.
tent, Huisgenoot verhoog, Burgersentrum, Kunsmark, Kyknet se leefarea,
toer.
                                                                    Inligting ontvang van Christopher Tarentaal

Birds in Calitzdorp

The Cape siskin (Crithagra totta), is a small passerine bird in the finch family. It is an endemic resident breeder in the
southern Cape Province of South Africa.
This locally common but shy and unobtrusive siskin is found in the southwestern and southern Cape’s rocky slopes,
coastal cliffs and fynbos-covered mountains. It also occurs in towns and the suburbs of Cape Town.
The Cape siskin averages 13 cm in length. The flight feathers and tail have white spots on the tips which are
diagnostic for both sexes, and especially visible in flight. The adult male has a light brown back, wing coverts, rump
and upper tail and yellow underparts. The head, nape and sides of neck are yellowish grey and olive. Fine dark brown
streaks are most prominent on the head and the sides of the throat.
The female is similar but duller; she lacks grey on the head and has more streaking on the face and breast. The
juvenile plumage is much like the female’s but duller and with darker or browner underparts.
There is no range overlap with the slightly larger Drakensberg siskin, which lacks the white spots on the flight feathers
and tail and has less uniform upperparts.
The Cape siskin’s call is a voyp-veeyr, often given in flight. and the song is a weak, pleasant warble similar to
the yellow-fronted canary.
The nest is constructed by the female with fine plant material, lined with plant down and animal hair. The clutch is three
or four, occasionally five, eggs, incubated by the female. She is fed by the male on the nest by regurgitation.
The Cape siskin is seen in pairs or small flock, moving unobtrusively through bushes and scrub as it forages for seeds,
buds and insects.

                                     “FLIGHT FOR BIRDERS 2019”
                               BIRD IDENTIFICATION & CONSERVATION COURSE
                                                       5 & 6 APRIL 2019
'Flight for Birders' was developed to assist novices and experienced birdwatchers to become involved in bird-
watching in a practical and sustainable way. Basic steps in the identification of birds are highlighted and the
identification of garden birds, water birds, birds of prey and more difficult species such as swallows, waders
and 'little brown jobs' are discussed systematically. The course is illustrated with more than 1,600 images and
drawings. Emphasis is placed on the further development of the Klein Karoo region as a top birding
destination. Important conservation issues are discussed and we focus on the growth of birding tourism.
Costs include basic notes and certificates endorsed by BirdLife South Africa. Gift vouchers are now available
– an ideal gift for budding bird-watchers.
