HYMN OF INVOCATION
“Jesus, I Will Ponder Now” LSB 440
Jesus, I will ponder now On Your holy passion;
With Your Spirit me endow For such meditation.
Grant that I in love and faith May the image cherish
Of Your suff’ring, pain, and death That I may not perish.

Make me see Your great distress, Anguish, and affliction,
Bonds and stripes and wretchedness And Your crucifixion;
Make me see how scourge and rod, Spear and nails did wound You,
How for them You died, O God, Who with thorns had crowned You.

Yet, O Lord, not thus alone Make me see Your passion,
But its cause to me make known And its termination.
Ah! I also and my sin Wrought Your deep affliction;
This indeed the cause has been Of Your crucifixion.

Grant that I Your passion view With repentant grieving.
Let me not bring shame to You By unholy living.
How could I refuse to shun Ev’ry sinful pleasure
Since for me God’s only Son Suffered without measure?

If my sins give me alarm And my conscience grieve me,
Let Your cross my fear disarm; Peace of conscience give me.
Help me see forgiveness won By Your holy passion.
If for me He slays His Son, God must have compassion!

Graciously my faith renew; Help me bear my crosses,
Learning humbleness from You, Peace mid pain and losses.
May I give You love for love! Hear me, O my Savior,
That I may in heav’n above Sing Your praise forever.

CALL TO WORSHIP
P: Jesus said, “I did not come to invite the righteous, but sinners.” Merciful God, we
   do not dare to come to this table trusting in our own goodness and virtue. We come
   because we are sinful people and need forgiveness. We come because we are
   hungry for life and need to be fed.
C: Father, forgive us and feed us.

                                          3
P: We come because Christ has invited us sinners. We come in gratitude and wonder
   to offer our very selves to You in worship and adoration.
C: Father, accept our praise, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

INVOCATON
P: In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION
P: Almighty God, to Whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from Whom no
   secrets are hid, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy
   Spirit, that we may both love You and bring honor to Your holy name, through
   Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.
C: Amen.
P: People of God, in preparation for coming to the Holy Supper of our Lord Jesus
   Christ, let us faithfully examine ourselves and make confession of our sins to our
   gracious God as part of our preparation.
All:O almighty God, merciful Father, I recognize that I am a sinner in many
   ways. I therefore confess to You all my sins, both those that are known and
   those unknown to me as well. I deserve Your present and eternal punishment.
   But I am sorry for these sins and I do sincerely repent of them. Gracious
   Lord, for the sake of the sufferings and death of Your Son Jesus Christ, be
   merciful and gracious to me. Forgive me all my sins and grant me the power
   of Your Holy Spirit so that I may change my sinful life from this day forward
   and forever.
P: In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your
   sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

                        T SERVICE OF THE WORD T

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Exodus 12:2-14
2
  "This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. 3Tell the
whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a
lamb for his family, one for each household. 4If any household is too small for a
whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into
account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb
needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5The animals you choose must
be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats.
6
  Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the people of the
community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7Then they are to take some of
                                           4
the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they
eat the lambs. 8That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along
with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9Do not eat the meat raw or cooked
in water, but roast it over the fire—head, legs and inner parts. 10Do not leave any of it
till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11This is how you are to eat
it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in
your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the LORD's Passover. 12"On that same night I will
pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn—both men and animals—and I
will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. 13The blood will be a
sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over
you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. 14"This is a day you
are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival
to the LORD - a lasting ordinance.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 14:12-31
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the fourteenth chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord. (spoken)
12
  On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to
sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go
and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?" 13So he sent two of his disciples,
telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.
Follow him. 14Say to the owner of the house he enters, 'The Teacher asks: Where is
my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' 15He will show you
a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there." 16The
disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they
prepared the Passover. 17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18While
they were reclining at the table eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will
betray me—one who is eating with me." 19They were saddened, and one by one they
said to him, "Surely not I?" 20"It is one of the Twelve," he replied, "one who dips
bread into the bowl with me. 21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.
But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had
not been born." 22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body." 23Then he took the cup,
gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it. 24"This is my blood of
the covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them. 25"I tell you the truth, I
will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the
kingdom of God." 26When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of

                                            5
Olives. 27"You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written: " 'I will strike the
shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.' 28But after I have risen, I will go ahead of
you into Galilee." 29Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not." 30"I tell you the
truth," Jesus answered, "today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you
yourself will disown me three times." 31But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I
have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: (spoken) Praise to You, O Christ.

SERMON HYMN “When You Woke That Thursday Morning” Jaroslav J. Vajda

When You woke that Thursday morning,
Savior, Teacher, faithful Friend,
Thoughts of self and safety scorning,
Knowing how the day would end;
Lamb of God, foretold for ages,
Now at last the hour had come
When but One could pay sin’s wages;
You assumed their dreadful sum.

Never so alone and lonely,
Longing with tormented heart
To be with Your dear ones only
For a quiet hour apart:
Sinless Lamb and fallen creature,
One last Paschal meal to eat,
One last lesson as their teacher,
Washing Your disciples’ feet.

What was there that You could give them
That would never be outspent,
That great gift that would outlive them,
What last will and testament?
“Show Me and the world you love Me,
Know Me as the Lamb of God:
Do this in remembrance of Me,
Eat this Body, drink this Blood.”

One in faith, in love united,
All one body, You the head,
When we meet, by You invited,

                                              6
You are with us, as You said.
One with You and one another
In a unity sublime,
See in us Your sister, brother,
One in ev’ry place and time.

One day all the Church will capture,
That bright vision glorious,
And Your saints will know the rapture
That Your heart desired for us,
When the longed-for peace and union
Of the Greatest and the least
Meet in joyous, blest communion
In Your never-ending feast.

SERMON

OFFERING + Solo “Gethsemane” (Getty, Townend)
To see the King of Heaven fall In anguish to His knees;
The Light and Hope of all the world
Now overwhelmed with grief.
What nameless horrors must He see,
To cry out in the garden;
“Oh, take this cup away from Me,
Yet not my will but Yours;
Yet not my will but Yours.”

To know each friend will fall away,
And heaven’s voice be still,
For hell to have its vengeful day
Upon Golgotha’s hill.
No words describe the Savior’s plight –
To be by God forsaken
Till wrath and love are satisfied,
And every sin is paid,
And every sin is paid.

What took Him to this wretched place?
What kept Him on this road?
His love for Adam’s cursed race,
For every broken soul.

                                          7
No sin too slight to overlook,
No crime too great to carry,
All mingled in this poisoned cup,
And yet He drank it all;
The Savior drank it all.

OFFERTORY LSB 618
I come, O Savior, to Thy table,
For weak and weary is my soul;
Thou, Bread of Life, alone art able
To satisfy and make me whole:
Lord, may Thy body and Thy blood
Be for my soul the highest good!

DISTRIBUTION OF THE HOLY COMMUNION
+ Solo “The Upper Room” (N. Price, D. Besig)
There in a quiet upper room they gathered
together once again.
The Master stood among the twelve he called his closest friends.
“Soon I must leave you,” said the Lord. “
My Father will call me from this place.
Although you may not understand, my life is in his hands, I must obey.”

They sat in the silence, tears in their eyes.
He spoke once again to ease their minds;
“Be not afraid. Do not despair.
When you need me I will always be there.”
“Come sit beside me,” said the Lord.
“For here at this table we are one.
Come share this simple meal with me, and show that you believe I am God’s Son.
This bread is my body broken for you.

                                          9
This cup is my blood which is shed for you.
Take, now and eat; take, now and drink. Do this always in remembrance of me.”

“Walk in my footsteps,” said the Lord.
“Be steadfast in ev’rything you do.
And keep me always in your hearts, though we may be apart, I am with you.”

“Christ Be My Leader” LSB 861
Christ be my Leader by night as by day;
Safe through the darkness, for He is the way.
Gladly I follow, my future His care,
Darkness is daylight when Jesus is there.

Christ be my Teacher in age as in youth,
Drifting or doubting, for He is the truth.
Grant me to trust Him; though shifting as sand,
Doubt cannot daunt me; in Jesus I stand.

Christ be my Savior in calm as in strife;
Death cannot hold me, for He is the life.
Nor darkness nor doubting nor sin and its stain
Can touch my salvation: with Jesus I reign.

“The Infant Priest Was Holy Borne” LSB 624
The infant Priest was holy born For us unholy and forlorn;
From fleshly temple forth came He, Anointed from eternity.

This great High Priest in human flesh Was icon of God’s righteousness.
His hallowed touch brought sanctity; His hand removed impurity.

The holy Lamb undaunted came To God’s own altar lit with flame;
While weeping angels hid their eyes, This Priest became a sacrifice.

But death would not the victor be Of Him who hung upon the tree.
He leads us to the Holy Place Within the veil, before God’s face.

The veil is torn, our Priest we see, As at the rail on bended knee
Our hungry mouths from Him receive The bread of immortality.
                                                                 10
The body of God’s Lamb we eat, A priestly food and priestly meat;
On sin-parched lips the chalice pours His quenching blood that life restores.

With cherubim and seraphim Our voices join the endless hymn,
And “Holy, holy, holy” sing To Christ, God’s Lamb, our Priest and King.

“Jesus Christ, Our Blessed Savior” LSB 627 vv.1-4
Jesus Christ, our blessèd Savior, Turned away God’s wrath forever;
By His bitter grief and woe He saved us from the evil foe.

As His pledge of love undying, He, this precious food supplying,
Gives His body with the bread, And with the wine the blood He shed.

Jesus here Himself is sharing; Heed then how you are preparing,
For if you do not believe, His judgment then you shall receive.

Praise the Father, who from heaven To His own this food has given,
Who, to mend what we have done, Gave into death His only Son.

CLOSING HYMN
“Lord, Support Us All Day Long” LSB 884
Lord, support us all day long, Guide and strengthen.
Evening comes, the world is hushed, Shadows lengthen,
Work is done, life’s fevered pace Now has ended;
Christ, to You, our final rest Is commended.

Be our light in darkness, Lord, Our defender;
In Your presence perils all Must surrender.
Drive all dark satanic snares From each dwelling;
Then, at peace, our hearts Your praise Will be telling.

With Your presence, Lord, draw near Those who labor
Through the nighttime on behalf Of their neighbor.
Grant them courage for each fear, Faithful caring:
Your compassion and Your love Truly sharing.

Gracious Lord, we give You thanks, Praise and bless You,
As the giver of all good We confess You.
This past day we now commit To Your keeping
And entrust to You the hours Of our sleeping.
