Welcome to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church

We are glad you are here and hope you will return!
Please make yourself at home and if you need anything,
just ask and someone will be glad to assist you.

Restrooms for the Church are located in the Fellowship Center.

All baptized persons of any age are welcome to receive communion at our services.

St. Mark’s was founded and the Historic Church was built in 1849.
The students and faculty of nearby St. James School built the church as a missionary effort and it
was used as a hospital following the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg. The balcony in the
historic church was restored in 2014 as a place of prayer and pilgrimage to honor the lives of our
nineteenth century African American members, both slave and free. The Fellowship Center was
completed in 2011 and hosts worship and gatherings for the community.

St. Mark’s is part of the Diocese of Maryland, a member of the Episcopal Church and the world-
wide Anglican Communion—those Churches born out of the Church of England.

We provide gluten–free wafers and wine.
Please inform the priest of your preference when you come forward for communion.

                     THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

The First Lesson: Ezekiel 2:1-5
The Lord said to me: O mortal, stand up on your feet, and I will speak with you. And
when he spoke to me, a spirit entered into me and set me on my feet; and I heard him
speaking to me. He said to me, Mortal, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to a
nation of rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have
transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants are impudent and stubborn. I
am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, “Thus says the Lord GOD.”
Whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house), they shall know
that there has been a prophet among them.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

The Psalm: 123

1 To you I lift up my eyes, *
to you enthroned in the heavens.
2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, *
and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
3 So our eyes look to the LORD our God, *
until he show us his mercy.
4 Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy, *
for we have had more than enough of contempt,
5 Too much of the scorn of the indolent rich, *
and of the derision of the proud.

                                            7
The Epistle: II Corinthians 12:2-10
I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—
whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that
such a person—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows—
was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is
permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will
not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I
will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me
than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character
of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me
in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated.
Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me,
“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” So, I will
boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in
me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and
calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

SEQUENCE HYMN 635 If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee

The Holy Gospel: Mark 6:1-13

The Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ According to Mark
8:30 – Glory be to thee, O Lord! 10:00 – Glory to you, Lord Christ!

J esus came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the
sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were
astounded. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom
that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands!
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and
Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Then Jesus
said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among
their own kin, and in their own house.” And he could do no deed of power there,
except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed
at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve
and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean
                                           8
spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no
bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said
to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place
will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that
is on your feet as a testimony against them.” So they went out and proclaimed that all
should repent. They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick
and cured them.

                             The Gospel of the Lord.
8:30 – Praise be to thee, O Christ! 10:00 – Praise to you, Lord Christ!

The Sermon

The Nicene Creed BCP, page 358
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the
only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down
from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the
Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius
Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in
accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the
giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the
Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We
believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of
the world to come. Amen.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to
you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and
life; you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all
the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your
Name:
THE SANCTUS S-129 Holy, Holy, Holy Lord

                                           10
The Minister continues
Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the
Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully
in remembrance of Jesus Christ out Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a
pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the
power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

                      Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
Therefore let us keep the feast.

The Gifts of God for the People of God.
Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you,
and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Announcements for Sunday, July 4, 2021

SUNDAY, July 4, Sixth Sunday after Pentecost, Independence Day
 A bless-ed Independence Day to everyone, as we celebrate our nation’s 245th
birthday today. Chaplain Lindsey (Arnold) is with us today for our morning
worship services, which will include special prayers for our nation and
purposefully-chosen music by our Organist/Choirmaster, Kirk Denton. Service
times today are at 8:30 AM in the Historic Church, and 10 AM in the Fellowship
Center, which includes our livestream on Facebook.
 A new liturgical schedule was distributed this week for July, August, and
part of September. Participant contact information sheets were also distributed,
to enable finding a replacement when the need arises. Hard copies of both are on
the literature tables and can also be found on St. Mark’s website.
 The Altar Guild is welcoming new members. Please contact the church office
at 301-582-0417 if you would like to work behind the scenes in this important
ministry. No worries if you want to serve but don’t know what to do. Training
will be provided by an existing member of the Guild.
   Today’s Diocesan Cycle of Prayer includes the following: Advent, Baltimore;
Cathedral of the Incarnation, Baltimore; Church on the Square, Canton
 Heartfelt thanks for mailing your offerings. St. Mark’s continues to rely on the
generosity of our members and friends to continue God’s work. Please consider
making a donation. Our mailing address is: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church,
18313 Lappans Road, Boonsboro, MD 21713. You may also use PushPay as a
way to give. A heartfelt thank you for helping us to continue our Lord's work!
UPDATES FROM YOUR VESTRY
 New Vestry members will be elected at a special Annual Meeting on Sunday,
    September 12.
 Consider becoming a member of the Vestry! St. Mark’s is seeking visionary
change agents who are team players and can lead us during this time of transition
as we seek to call a new rector. Prayer warriors and those with special gifts such
as patience, faithfulness, gentleness, kindness, and self-control are encouraged to
apply. (These qualities are Fruits of the Spirit, found in Galatians 5:22-23). The
only requirements are that you are at least 16 years old, have been baptized, and
are a recorded member of St. Mark’s for at least 90 days prior to the annual
meeting. If you are interested in becoming part of the decision-making leadership
at St. Mark’s, please call the church office at 301-582-0417 or email
                                          13
