Welcome from the Interim Rector
          H O LY W EEK
Thank you for being here, and joining yourself to God and to one another in this week we call holy.
The whole week is holy for us because in it we experience the passionate heights and depths of
God’s love for us. This divine love is poured out for us by our Lord Jesus Christ, the one who calls
us friends and makes us one with him through his consummate acts of life-giving love and ministry.
We are eager to share this week with Christ and with one another, and invite you to be here as we
make our journey from darkness to light, from brokenness and death to the love that will not let us
go until all Creation has been lifted up into Resurrection.

          M AU N D Y T H U R S DAY
“Love one another as I have loved you.” Tonight Jesus pours out his love in word and deed. He calls
us friends, despite the ways we betray and deny him. He feeds us, knowing that we hunger for deeper
love, deeper meaning. He gets down on his knees and washes our feet, showing us the way into the
love and meaning for which we yearn. He goes to pray in a garden, wrestling on our behalf with
God, asking God to spare him, but becoming pliant to the will of God, willing to go the full distance
to show that not even the threat of death can dissuade him from showing forth God’s undying love.
You are welcome here tonight. It is a privilege for us to be washed and fed by Jesus, and be invited
and inspired by him to love one another as he loves us. Go with him even to Gethsemane, where he
will pray, and meet the bearers of death with the powerful love that overcomes all darkness.

          The Rev. William W. Rich
          Interim Rector

Opening Acclamation
Light and peace in Christ Jesus our Lord. Thanks be to God.
Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. God’s mercy endures for ever.

Collect of the Day Remain standing.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant
that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal
life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson Be seated. Exodus 12:1-4, 11-14
The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be
the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb
for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in
obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. This is how you shall eat it: your
loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord.
For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human
beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you on the
houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you
shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hymn 577 God is love and where true love is (Ubi Caritas - Murray)

Gospel Remain standing. John 13:1-17, 31b-35
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having
loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon
Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had
come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he
poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He
came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered, “You do not know now what I am
doing, but later you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you
have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him,
“One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.”
For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, “Do you know what I have
done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have
washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have
done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent
them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God
will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for
me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ I give you a new commandment, that
you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my
disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Homily The Rev. Rainey G. Dankel

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Where there is charity and love, God is there.
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. The love of Christ has gathered us together.
Exultemus, et in ipso jucundemur. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum. Let us revere and love the living God.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Amen. And from a sincere heart let us love one another. Amen.

A New Commandment All sing this antiphon, as indicated among choir verses below. Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625)

Choir The Lord Jesus, after he had supped with his disciples and had washed their feet said unto them,
“Do you know what I, your Lord and Master, have done to you?
I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done.”
Peace is my last gift to you, my own peace now I leave with you; peace which the world cannot give, I give to you.
I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you.
By this shall the world know that you are my disciples: that you have love for one another.
                                                                             All sing antiphon.
Choir I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people
and to those who turn their hearts to him.
May God be merciful to us and bless us. Show the light of his countenance and come to us.
O how good and pleasant it is when brethren live together in unity.
Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
                                                                             All sing antiphon.

Choir I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
Now our feet are standing within your gates O Jerusalem.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. “May they prosper who love you.”
Ubi caritas et amor Deus ibi est. Where true charity and love dwell God himself is there.
                                                                             All sing antiphon.

Choir Since the love of Christ has joined us in one body, let us all rejoice and be glad now and always.
As we hear and love our Lord, the living God, so let us love one another in sincerity and truth.
                                                                             All sing antiphon.

Prayers of the People All stand, or you may kneel.
In the power of the Spirit let us pray to the Father through Christ the savior of the world.
Father, on this, the night he was betrayed,
your Son Jesus Christ washed his disciples’ feet.
We commit ourselves to follow his example of love and service. Lord, hear us
   and humble us.
On this night, he prayed for his disciples to be one.
We pray for the unity of your Church.
   Lord, hear us
   and unite us.
On this night, he prayed for those who were to believe through his disciples’ message.
We pray for the mission of your Church.
   Lord, hear us
   and renew our zeal.
On this night, he commanded his disciples to love, but suffered rejection himself.
We pray for the rejected and unloved.
   Lord, hear us
and fill us with your love.
On this night, he reminded his disciples
that if the world hated them it hated him first.
We pray for those who are persecuted for their faith. Lord, hear us
   and give us your peace.
On this night, he accepted the cup of death
and looked forward to the new wine of the kingdom.
We remember those who have died in the peace of Christ. Lord, hear us
and welcome all your children into paradise.

Offertory
The offering received during the anthem is our opportunity to give of ourselves
to the glory of God. It supports our parish ministries and service to the community.

Offertory Anthem David Hurd (b. 1950)
Love bade me welcome; yet my soul drew back,
   Guilty of dust and sin.
But quick-eyed love observing me grow slack
   From my first entrance in,
Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning,
   If I lacked anything.
A guest, I answered, worthy to be here:
Love said, You shall be he.
I the unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear,
   I cannot look on thee.
Love took my hand, and smiling did reply,
Who made the eyes but I?
Truth, Lord, but I have marred them: let my shame
   Go where it doth deserve.
And know you not, says Love, who bore the blame?
My dear, then I will serve.
You must sit down, says Love, and taste my meat:
So, I did sit and eat.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and every where to give thanks to you, Holy God, Creator of heaven and earth,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. For our sins he was lifted high upon the cross, that he might draw the whole world to himself; and,
by his suffering and death, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who put their trust in him. Therefore we praise you, join-
ing our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory
  of your Name:

                                                                                                                             New Plainsong, David Hurd

6 v Maundy Thursday 2018
Remain standing, or you may kneel.

Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself …
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours,
Almighty God, now and for ever. Amen.
As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray:

                                                                                                           Maundy Thursday 2018 v 7
