1ACT ONE
THAT WHICH CARRIES ON -The theme of water parallels the concepts of hope
and carrying on in “On the Deck...”
THE LESS THAN HUMAN CLUB - This pairs with the quick-talking style in “Just
One Step” in which she appeals to her husband’s apparent lack of interest in her.
Kirsten’s one-sided date conversation shows her desperation to be noticed.
BE AGGRESSIVE - In “I’m Not Afraid of Anything,” she lists reasons why all of
her family members live in fear. It’s not a life she wants to lead. Similarly, the death
of Laura’s mother ignites a passion in her to leave fear behind and just be alive.
MONEY CAN’T BUY HAPPINESS - The woman explains in “Stars & Moon” that
rather than love and passion in a relationship, she sought money, material wealth,
and thus, safety. However, both she and Franklin realize that money doesn’t
always lead to contentment.
“OPENING: A NEW WORLD” - The opening stanza conjures images of brave
new worlds waiting to be conquered… In each song we will meet someone who
has reached a defining moment in his or her life.
“ON THE DECK OF A SPANISH SAILING SHIP 1492” - Onboard a 16th century
ship, the passengers plead to the Lord to give them the strength to survive the
journey. Just as their struggle becomes too much to bear, the passengers find
renewed hope of a better life.
“JUST ONE STEP” - We next see a woman standing on the window ledge of her
New York penthouse, comedically carrying on with grievances about her husband,
Murray. As a crowd gathers below, she threatens to step off the ledge and take her
own life.
“I’M NOT AFRAID OF ANYTHING” - A young woman seems ready for all of
life’s challenges and questions the fears of her children, parents, and husband. We
see that her strength is perhaps the very thing keeping a wall between her and the
people she loves.
“THE RIVER WON’T FLOW” - Two soloists wrestle with the dream of rewards
that hard work should promise. Wealth flows easily for some, but others aren’t as
lucky.
“TRANSITION/STARS & MOON”- A woman who married very well looks back
on the path she chose. She now regrets the misguided priorities of her youth.
“SHE CRIES” - A man goes through ups and downs with the woman he loves. She
lies and he heads out the door, but he finds himself coming back to her. Though
manipulative, her tears are a window to the woman he fell in love with.
“THE STEAM TRAIN” - Meanwhile, in the Bronx, a determined young man
dreams of life as a famous basketball star. His sadness, anger, and passion have
ignited a fire in him to realize the fantasy of his own new world.
2ACT TWO
PROTECTIVE SHIELD - In “The World Was Dancing,” he evaluates his father’s
risky business decision which led to failure. In this monologue, she too expresses
her fear of risk-taking and how she can’t trust others.
SOME GIRLS - This closely mirrors the rekindling of a relationship presented
in “I’d Give It All for You.” Where people grow apart but find out they’re better
together.
Excerpt of BROKEN HALLELUJAH - In “The Flagmaker, 1775,” she sews a flag to
distract herself from the horrors of the Revolutionary War. Almost 100 years later,
we see Maureen commenting on the devastation of the American Civil War.
BRING ABOUT CHANGE - It encompasses the many themes presented in the
musical: suffering, motivation, exploration, and hope.
“THE WORLD WAS DANCING” - A man struggling to reconcile his father’s
failure in a risky business venture with his education and the commitment he’s
made to his fiancée, Amy. His continual fear of failure makes him unable to choose
what he truly wants.
“SURABAYA SANTA” – In a newly created duet, Santa’s ex-girlfriend and Mrs.
Claus sing a scornful kiss off to their neglectful significant other.
“CHRISTMAS LULLABY” - Here, a young girl has just discovered she is pregnant.
For the first time, she has worth because she is bringing into the world another
person, maybe someone who will change the world the way she never could.
“KING OF THE WORLD” - But faith is shaken when we meet a desperate man
in a prison cell, crying foul of his accused sins. He realizes that his work is bigger
than just him, that even when he’s locked up, even after he’s gone, his work and his
legacy will live on.
“I’D GIVE IT ALL FOR YOU” - A separated couple appears on stage. Now as they
are reunited, they look back and understand they ran away out of fear of love.
Though the adventures were thrilling, they realize they are home with each other
at last.
“TRANSITION/FLAGMAKER 1775” - The mother of an American Revolutionary
soldier anxiously awaits the end of the brutal war.
“FLYING HOME” - Echoes of the flag maker linger as a young man hears the call
of angels who will accompany him where he belongs. Sung by soldiers who have
died in battle, they reassure us that even though we will be gone from this life, we
will live on in hearts and memories.
“FINAL TRANSITION/HEAR MY SONG” -The message of this song – and of
the whole show – is that we all go through these bad times. In a very real sense,
none of us is ever really alone. None of us is ever the only person to have ever gone
through a particular crisis. And our salvation comes through community.

ANNA
Class of ‘21
Thank you for sharing your amazing talents
with us over the years. We wish you many more
wonderful experiences throughout college.
You have become a beautiful young lady inside
and out. We couldn’t be more proud of you,
our awesome granddaughter.
We love you so much! ♥
Love you always,
Grandma and PapPap
Anna,
We are so proud of you!
From your first performance as
a fairy/mermaid in Peter Pan,
we knew that you discovered your
passion. We have enjoyed every
single moment watching you
perform. Listening to you sing,
dance, and act always makes us
smile and fills our hearts with joy.
We can not believe that this is your
senior year and your final North
Hills musical performance. We know
you are going to continue to do great
things and we can not wait to see
what is around the bend!
You are now and always will be our
shining star!
-We love you bunches-

23Morgan Kappeler,
From the time you were a child, your energy and
charisma has had the ability to hold the attention
of an entire room. The stage has proven to be
the perfect home for you. From dance recitals
to concerts to musicals, we’ve loved to watch you
find your passion and grow as a performer.
We are so proud of you, and know you will only
continue to shine. We love you!

Tyler,
It all started with Peter Pan
(the first time) and just like him,
you soared. You’ve done every
musical and play from middle
school until your Senior Year.
And then some. Never stop
rowing, growing, changing and...
Love, Your Whole Family
26Dear Cast, Crew, and Orchestra,
Thank you for exploring A NEW WORLD of making a
musical together this year. We took JUST ONE STEP
forward each rehearsal, filling out health forms, taking
temperatures, wearing masks, and social distancing.
You said you’d GIVE IT ALL, and kept going like
a STEAM TRAIN, reaching for the STARS AND
MOON.
We had our crew always on duty, saying “I’M NOT
AFRAID OF ANYTHING.” Our singers were ready to
HEAR MY SONG as they worked through solos and
harmonies. THE WORLD WAS DANCING on stage
with our featured dancers. And the pit was ON THE
DECK ready to play at a moment’s notice!
We’re so proud of your resilience, dedication, and
determination to make our show happen when so
many things in our lives haven’t been the way we want
them to be. And while it was different, we feel like
you’re all KINGS OF THE WORLD!
Congratulations!
Love,
Your Directors
