Southland’s coastline covers approximately 3,150km. The deep,
cool southern waters of the Exclusive Economic Zone contain a
wide variety of fish species including Southland’s most common
commercial fish species, the blue cod and crayfish (Spiny Rock
lobster).

The main fishing methods in Southland are: crayfish and cod
potting, oyster dredging, trawling, set netting, handlines and diving.
Seafood exports account for around 90% of the seafood industry
revenue and fisheries consistently ranks as the country’s fifth largest
export earner.

Currently aquaculture farming in Southland consists of mainly
mussel and salmon farming conducted in Big Glory Bay, Stewart
Island. Due to environmental constraints around farming within the
marine environment, land based Aquaculture is becoming
increasingly important.

Ocean Beach is the only onshore Aquaculture site in Southland and
when fully operational will be one of the largest Aquaculture parks in
New Zealand. The site is currently the second largest onshore Paua
(Abalone) fishery in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Abalone Company (NZAC) is in the early
stages of re-establishing the Paua (Abalone) farm that was
previously operated at Ocean Beach by Southern Marine
Farms. The Paua live within the cold clean water extracted
from the Foveaux Strait and feed on seaweed harvested from
the surrounding region. The farm brood stock are sourced from
Stewart Island with only the strongest and healthiest shellfish
selected for the breeding process.

The company is forecasting the first harvest of 400 tons
(approximately 20,000,000 Paua) per annum by 2022. Due to
the significant infrastructure in place this annual harvest could
be increased should a sufficient level of demand be achieved.

The New Zealand Abalone Company (NZAC) intends to
supply the domestic and international markets through
distribution partners rather than market the product directly.
The New Zealand Abalone Company (NZAC) are currently in
discussions with a number of parties about establishing long
term supplier relationships for significant quantities of New
Zealand Abalone.
