  I sometimes think that Matthew chapter 6 is one of the
     most uncomfortable chapters to read in the entire
 Scriptures. It probes and examines and holds a mirror up
  before us, and it will not allow us to escape. There is no
chapter which is more calculated to promote self-humbling
         and humiliation than this particular one.
                    But thank God for it.

                            from Psalm 138

                            Pastor: We give you thanks, O LORD, with
                            our whole hearts; before all of creation we sing
                            your praise.

                            Congregation: We bow down to your holy
                            temple and give thanks to your name for
                            your steadfast love and your faithfulness.

                            Pastor: On the day we called out, you answered
                            us, you strengthened our souls when they were
                            weak.

                            Congregation: For though you are high,
                            you regard the lowly.

                            Pastor. Though we walked in the midst of
                            trouble, you preserved our lives.

                            Together: The LORD will fulfill his
                            purposes for us. Your steadfast love,

        “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”

        Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
        the King of creation!
        O my soul, praise Him,
        for He is thy health and salvation!
        All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near,
        Join me in glad adoration.

        Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things
        so wondrously reigneth,
        Shelters thee under His wings, yea,
        so gently sustaineth!
        Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been
        Granted in what He ordaineth?

        Praise to the Lord,
        who doth prosper thy work and defend thee!
        Surely His goodness and mercy
        here daily attend thee;
        Ponder anew what the Almighty can do
        If with His love He befriend thee.

                         Trinity Hymnal #164

                         O for a thousand tongues to sing
                         My great Redeemer’s praise,
                         The glories of my God and King,
                         The triumphs of his grace!

                         My gracious Master and my God,
                         Assist me to proclaim,
                         To spread thro’ all the earth abroad
                         The honors of thy name.

                         Jesus! The name that charms our fears,
                         That bids our sorrows cease,
                         ’tis music in the sinner’s ears,
                         ’tis life and health and peace.

                         He breaks the power of reigning sin,
                         He sets the prisoner free;

SERMON TEXT

        Matthew 6:1-4 & 19-24

        1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before
        other people in order to be seen by them, for then
        you will have no reward from your Father who is in
        heaven.

        2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no
        trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the
        synagogues and in the streets, that they may be
        praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have
        received their reward. 3 But when you give to the
        needy, do not let your left hand know what your
        right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in
        secret. And your Father who sees in secret will
        reward you.

        19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,
        where moth and rust destroy and where thieves
        break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves
        treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust
        destroys and where thieves do not break in and
        steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart
        will be also.

                         22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye
                         is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23
                         but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full
                         of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how
                         great is the darkness!

                         24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will
                         hate the one and love the other, or he will be
                         devoted to the one and despise the other. You can
                         not serve God and money.

                  AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
                      Apostles’ Creed

                        I believe in God, the Father, Almighty;
                        maker of heaven and earth;
                        and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
                        who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
                        born of the Virgin Mary,
                        suffered under Pontius Pilate,
                        was crucified, dead, and buried;
                        He descended into hell;
                        the third day he rose again from the dead;
                        He ascended into heaven and sitteth
                        at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
                        from thence he shall come to judge
                        the quick and the dead.
                        I believe in the Holy Ghost;
                        the holy catholic church;
                        the communion of saints;
                        the forgiveness of sins;
                        the resurrection of the body;

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND
WORDS OF INSTITUTION

    Prayer of Belief
    Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more
    sinful than I ever before believed, but through you,
    I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared to
    hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my
    punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and
    new life. Knowing that you have been raised from
    the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my
    savior. Amen.

     Prayer of Humble Access
     I do not presume to come to this your table, O
     merciful Lord, trusting in my own goodness, but
     only in your righteousness credited to me. I am not
     worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under
     your table. But you are the same Lord whose
     manner is always to show mercy. Grant me,
     therefore, O Lord, the grace to commune now with
     Christ by faith, that I may evermore live with him
     and he in me. Amen.

                    “Speak, O Lord”

                        Speak, O Lord, as we come to You
                        To receive the food of Your Holy Word.
                        Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;
                        Shape and fashion us in Your likeness,
                        That the light of Christ might be seen today
                        In our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
                        Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us
                        All Your purposes for Your glory.

                        Teach us, Lord, full obedience,
                        Holy reverence, true humility;
                        Test our thoughts and our attitudes
                        In the radiance of Your purity.
                        Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see
                        Your majestic love and authority.
                        Words of pow’r that can never fail—
                        Let their truth prevail over unbelief.

                        Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;
                        Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us—
                        Truths unchanged from the dawn of time
                        That will echo down through eternity.
                        And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises,
                        And by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us.
                        Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built

                       “There is a Fountain”
                       Trinity Hymnal # 253

                       There is a fountain filled with blood,
                       Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
                       And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
                       Lose all their guilty stains:
                       Lose all their guilty stains,
                       Lose all their guilty stains;
                       And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
                       Lose all their guilty stains.

                       The dying thief rejoiced to see
                       That fountain in his day;
                       And there have I, as vile as he,
                       Washed all my sins away:
                       Washed all my sins away,
                       Washed all my sins away;
                       And there have I, as vile as he,
                       Washed all my sins away.

                       E’er since by faith I saw the stream
                       Your flowing wounds supply,
                       Redeeming love has been my theme,
                       And shall be till I die:
                       And shall be till I die,
                       And shall be till I die;
                       Redeeming love has been my theme,
